Old photos

Mike Rickard

Last updated: 05 July 2007

Mike Rickard from Tywyn let's us dip into his huge collection of old photos tracing Aberdyfi's long history.

Take a tour back in time...

I was first given lots of old photos by Thomas Jones, a chemist from Tywyn, in 1979. And now it's a drug - I've got to carry on collecting. I've now got thousands!

Aberdyfi was the main port for the area, exporting slate from Corris and Abergynolwyn - which is why the Tal-y-llyn railway is there. They also used to import goods like grain, cement and timber which were used in building the village.

Aberdyfi and the surrounding area were mostly owned by the Corbett family. Then, a Mr John Corbet bought the estate - they weren't related. Both families lived in the Ynysmaengwyn mansion, which is now a caravan park near Tywyn.

They owned half of Aberdyfi, including Caethau Farm and the old mill on the Tywyn road, though it was all sold off in the 20th century.
