Tiger at the Welsh Mountain Zoo Welsh Mountain Zoo
This conservation zoo is located high on the hills above Colwyn Bay and celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2003.

Follow the progress of four species at the Welsh Mountain Zoo with BBC Wales Today and Where I live.

The zoo is part of a programme to help safeguard the future of foreign species such as the Mongolian wild horses, Humboldt Penguins and the White-Fronted Marmosets, as well as our native red squirrels, otters and golden eagles. The reptile house is home to the only breeding pair of American alligators in the UK, whilst children can visit the smaller, friendly animals in pets corner.

There is also the opportunity to watch the penguin parade, sea-lion feeding displays and falconry.

Find out more about the residents and work of the zoo with keeper Peter Litherland. More...

Opening times: Daily except Christmas Day. Winter 9.30 to 4pm, summer until 5pm.

About 70 per cent of exhibits can be accessed by a wheelchair user assisted by a carer. There are disabled toilets and parking facilities on site, and admission to disabled visitors is completely free.

I used to work at the zoo way back in 1966-67, it was a great place to work. I used to look after a chimp called Tammy in the children's zoo, and a chimp called Cherie. I wonder if they are still alive? The zoo was then owned by the Jackson family (no relation). Are they still there? I loved the summer days when the visitors were there and it was busy. They also used to run a free bus from Colwyn Bay. I must go and visit again. I still miss it even now as I love animals. I was also being trained by Mr Robert Debastiai to fly birds of prey, which was a fantastic experience.

We first visited the zoo about 10 years ago and remember a blind sea-lion. When we went this month we hoped it would be still there - sad to say it had passed away. The free flying bird display, especially the 2 blue and yellow maccaws and penguin parade is worth the entry fee alone.

I visited the zoo last summer and haven't stopped going since. Thank you to all the staff for being friendly and the zoo for never disappointing us.

I visited the zoo last week with my children. We all enjoyed it very much. Our favourite animals were the monkeys and the tigers. The whole of the zoo is fantastic, but they are the animals that stood out for us.

I recently visited the zoo and was very impressed with the new sea lion enclosure. The show was the best I have ever seen with the assistant head keeper showing her affection for the animals. She took time out to answer our questions and even gave us a private show as she took us over to feed the penguins, Thank you. A lovely place.

My husband and I have visited the zoo a few times now, I am in a wheelchair and though some places are hard going its a lovely place. Last year we were made to feel most welcome by a large chap who worked in the cafe. He explained the map to us and took time out on his break to help my husband with my wheelchar so I could see the tigers. I was sorry he was not there this year. A lovely zoo and we shall be back again.
