Bardsey Island Bardsey Island
Bardsey Island has been a haven for nature lovers and those seeking solitude for centuries. It was declared a national nature reserve in 1986.

Many make the journey to Bardsey each summer to glimpse cormorants, shags, manx shearwaters and curlews.

Grey seals also come to bask on the beaches, and other unusual animals live on the island's mountain and grasslands.

Between eight and 13 people live on the island, including a farmer, warden and bird experts.

You can visit the island for a day, or stay longer in one of several old farmhouses. You need to book at least a few days beforehand for the 10am sailing from Porth Meudwy, near Aberdaron, for the 15-minute crossing. Alternatively, you can book the 9am sailing from Pwllheli for an hour's sea trip to the island.

There is an alternative boat service out of Porth Meudwy, Aberdaron, from Bardsey Island itself - includes a talk on the history and wildlife by a fourth-generation islander, and no awkward dinghy transfers. See the Bardsey Boat Trips website [on useful links] or telephone 07971769895 for times of crossings.

There is an interesting DVD - A Celtic Pilgrimage to Bardsey - presented by the Llyn vicar, Rev. Andrew Jones. He follows both north and south pilgrim routes along the Llyn to Bardsey. The ancient pilgrim chapels/churches are beautiful and evocative. Just log in to St Hywyns church at Aberdaron where the renowned English language Welsh poet R.S. Thomas was minister for years.

This place is brilliant. The 9am sailing from Pwllheli is well worth it. You only need 1 hour to take the magnificent sights of this enthralling Island. Whilst there i saw shags, manx shearwaters and curlews. Although i didnt get to stay in one of the old farmhouses, i still got a taste of welsh cooking, mmmmm welsh cakes, you should definitely try them, they're delicious. Before i left i had time for a quick swim in one of the bays there.
