Breakwater Country Park Breakwater Country Park, Holyhead
This 106-acre former quarry is run by Anglesey County Council and is situated on the coast at Holyhead.

The breakwater is one of the longest in the world. Visitors are welcome to roam the park, or follow the designated walks through the grounds and beyond. There is varying terrain, including fields, a lake and the rocky shoreline.

The wildlife is therefore varied, but most notable are the seals who visit the Holyhead coast. You could also go on a hunt for the wild marsh and bee orchids growing in the park.

Gareth Evans, the countryside warden for Breakwater Park, said: "Some interesting birdlife commonly seen at the park include the stonechat, chough and peregrine falcon with oystercatchers and cormorants on the coast."

The park was a finalist in The Times Green Spaces Awards 2008.

Opening times: Daily.
Access: Along with a RADAR key toilet, disabled parking spaces and accessible footpaths, the park's information centre is all on one level. The path around the lake has been widened to accommodate wheelchair users.
Location: Breakwater County Park, Holyhead, Isle of Anglesey.
Directions: Follow the brown tourist signs from the centre of Holyhead.

Jill Foxon, West Yorkshire
We have just had a lovely holiday in Anglesey and were delighted to find the Breakwater Country park. As we parked the calls of a raven echoed round the quarry. We were impressed by the appearance of the park and its lay-out. There were many interesting buildings, mosaics and paths. The walk up to South Stack was well paved and we were facinated by the butterflies, seals, birds and wonderful views etc. At the end of the day there was just time to grab a cup of tea and a book from the shop. The staff were so friendly. We sat and finished the day by watching the anglers. I have recommended this place to many people since we have been home.

As a family we enjoy the park and take every opportunity to visit. We go at different times of the year and always find something new to see or do - last time we collected blackberries to have back in Bradford during the winter to remind us of Holyhead. A great place.

I live about ten minutes walk from the park and visit every few days. It keeps on getting better and better - the recent additions of the mosaic's and wooden poles are simple and very effective. Would love to see more recycling bins there and also a childrens play area with swings and a slide etc. I'm sure this would attract more people to stay.

I was part of the team which redeveloped the park. The work was carried out over a period of 18 months. Birse Const. were the main contractors back in the early nineties. At the end of the job bonuses are normaly given. Mine turned out to be a lady who I am still with to this day. Take a bow Carolyn. Any old workmates want to get in touch. I am working in Manchester if you would like to swap old stories over a beer or ten.

The Breakwater country park is the most peaceful place to go to in holyhead if u want to just get away from the noise. there is also a lovely wark around holyhead mountain from north stack to south stack. You can see for miles form the top of the mountain. I go here when i want a nice place to just have a quite walk with my dogs. There is no rubbish anywhere - it is kept clean and tidy and unspoiled.

Anyone coming to holyhead i would advise them to go and vist the breakwater country park.there is also abit of history in the breakwater country park there is a! n old quarry which is runned by the county concil. This place is definately worth going to!

It was a wonderful idea by a local council man Mr Robert Jones to make this barren land into a park. I have been told by the warden, it was all used by the quarry and the stones used to build the Breakwater(longest in the UK). There is a building with all the history on the site. A nice place to have a picnic.
