Portmeirion gardens Portmeirion
These gardens in and around Clough Williams-Ellis' Italianate village of Portmeirion, have been cultivated since Victorian times. Original specimen conifers, Wellingtonia and Himalayan Firs remain.
The village, also famous as the location for 60s cult TV series The Prisoner, is home to a Tulip Tree, a massive Variegated Sycamore and a Weeping Silver Lime which scents the Village in August.

In Edwardian times, the gardens were extended to include Y Gwyllt (The Wild), which is home to Rhododendron, Camellia and a large Magnolia campbellii which blossoms with pale pink flowers during Easter time.

  • Opening times: Every day except Christmas Day, from 9:30am to 5:30pm.
Access: You can park near the main gate in the designated disabled spaces, but only about half of the garden is accessible in a wheelchair due to the number of steps. Disabled toilets are provided and are situated at the main gate and in the cafe. The beach is out of bounds if you have mobility difficulties, but you can make use of the mini bus if you're too tired to make it back up to the car park from the village.
    Location: Portmeirion, Penrhyndeudraeth, Gwynedd.
Directions: From Porthmadog, drive over the Cob, turn right in the village sqaure of Minffordd and continue for one mile to Portmeirion.

Portmeirion was my parents' destination of choice when I was small, so it became a second home. Now I am older I go to unwind, with my Jack Russell 'Naila'. She just loves the wood full of squirrels.I like the privacy of the place, especially at night when the gates have closed.

I was born in Porthmadog in 1944. Times were hard for everyone just after the war. I can remember wanting to see Portmeirion because of what we had heard of it, but money was in short supply. So without our parents' knowledge, off a little band of ragamuffins went, to walk across from the Cob to a small sandy beach at the back of Portmeirion. On the way over I lost a shoe in the muddy sand. Little did I know there were sinking sands around there. We all arrived safe but bedraggled, mud as far as our knees, and in my case shoeless. There sitting reading was the film star Ingrid Bergman. She was there making a film called The Inn of the Sixth Happiness. She was very sweet and ordered us pop and ice cream, then escorted us off the property through the front entrance. It was a mile or two hike back home.

my parents took me there as a teenager just before the prisoner series was aired. We recognised the village straight away, but have never been back due to tourism,it was virtually unknown those days, except to neighbouring localities.I am from Liverpool, not very far away.would love to go back.Happy days.

We stayed in Portmeirion September 06. It was bustling with people, yet it is one of the most peaceful places you could ever hope to find. Nothing beats seeing the sun glistening on the estuary and grabbing a big lung full of fresh Welsh air. It almost brings a sentimental tear to my eye just thinking about it. We loved the place so much that we have just confirmed a date to get married in the village next year. We can't wait to return and see the place again and create a whole new set of memories.

It's like an adventure. Stunning buildings that have such an interesting history and the gardens and grounds are like being in a fantasy land. A surprise around every corner. I have been there 8 times so far and plan to go again soon. The quaint deli selling confectionary and conserves etc. is the cherry on the cake for a sweet tooth like me too.

It quite simply is the most beautiful, amazing calming place to be, visiting is like a tonic, you feel full of joy whilst you are there and long to return when you are away.

When visiting Portmerion in the late sixties we had the good fortune to be there on a day when Clough Williams-Ellis was actually there. He was taking a tour of some people round personally, and I still have a rather gritty black and white photo of him standing on the bridge as he talked to the people standing below.
