Plas Newydd woodland walk Plas Newydd

Plas Newydd, now a National Trust property but still home to the Marquess of Anglesey, is an 18th century mansion set in grounds on the banks of the Menai Strait.

There are woodland walks and access to a jetty for boat trips along the Strait.

There is a spring, Australasian arboretum, with an understorey of shrubs and wild flowers, while autumn brings out the massed hydrangeas.

There is also a rhododendron garden and Italianate terrace overlooking the Strait. Guided walks with the gardener can be booked for parties larger than 15.

Opening times: From March 29 to November 2, Saturday to Wednesday, 11am to 5.30pm.
Access: As the parking is 400 yards from the house, there's a complimentary minibus and shuttle service to the house and garden laid on. The shop and cafe are fully accessible, the disabled WC is in the dairy, and a ramp can be provided to gain access to the house. There's three wheelchairs available to borrow and full ground floor access as well as seating throughout and a picture file of the rooms on other floors. If the grounds are too much of a trek, a shuttle service will be provided. Braille and large print guides have been produced.

I went to Plas Newydd for the first time 3 weeks ago and was captivated by the experience. The gardens are absolutely stunning (autumnal colours were just beginning to show), the weather was beautiful and the views across the Menai Straits to Snowdonia were breathtaking. The cafe and bookshop were also impressive too. I look forward to paying it another visit when I return to Anglesey next year.
