Penrhyn Castle Penrhyn Castle Gardens

Penrhyn Castle was built in the early 19th century for the prosperous Pennant family and is now a National Trust property. The 45 acres of grounds, with paths accessible to wheelchair users, have views over the Menai Strait and Snowdonia beyond.

Spring is the best time to see the masses of snowdrops and daffodils, while summer brings out the bluebells.

One of the most notable parts of the grounds is the walled garden which, due to its sheltered location, is home to many tropical plants including palms, maidenhair trees, jasminium climbers and Chinese gooseberries.
Penrhyn's seasons by head gardener Mike Anderson.
Take an audio visual tour of the house.

Opening times: From March 27 to October 31, every day except Tuesday; March to June/September to October 11am to 5pm; July and August 10am to 5pm.
Access: The majority of the paths around the gardens are gravel and the rest are grass. There's disabled parking, or if you prefer, you can be dropped off right by the entrance and picked up from there. Three disabled toilets are provided and there's the opportunity to ring a day in advance to pre-book the golf buggy which can then drive you around the gardens. Printed guides are available in large print and braille and there's an audio tour on offer, too.
Location: Penrhyn Castle, Bangor, Gwynedd, LL57 4HN.

My family and I spent the afternoon at the castle and gardens. This place is awesome and well worth a visit. It seems that this place cost 150k to build, which in today's money is about 50 million.Who today could afford to spend that sort of money on a house? So I was wondering, considering the house became NT in the 1950s, where did all that wealth go?

Mary B. (Marks) Roberts,
I worked in the castle for the Daimler Company during WWII and lived with my father, Herbert Darwood, who was manager of the Bangor Division of Daimler. I worked in the Dining Room of the Castle for the Wages Department. I loved the Oriental Garden where we usually ate our lunch on fine days. I lived in Coventry until Daimler was blitzed and the plant was built in Bangor, North Wales. I married a Bangor Boy, Leslie Roberts and emigrated to Canada and the USA in 1954. I will start looking for any records or photos that I may have.

Had a lovely day out at Penrhyn Castle today - very elaborate interior and fabulous grounds. The slavery exhibition was very moving and definitely made us think of how the place was funded. Well worth a visit.

Roberts.I work at Penrhyn Castle and would love to speak to you about your memories of the place, particularly any remembrances you may have about the World War II period. Similarly, if anybody else has any memories of the castle pre-National Trust, I'd love to hear from you. I can be contacted at the castle, details can be found on The National Trust website.Great to see your comments on this site, I hope I get to speak to some of you soon!

I have just spent a day in the gardens as part of the annual snowdrops event, and its Fantastic. My toddler loved it as well, as she watched the toads mateing. Great gardens. The castle was closed, but the gardens are fantastic. Best £1 I have spent for many years!

I was born in Bangor in 1941, My Father was sent to work for the Daimler Shadow factory in Penryn Castle from Allesley in Coventry. I have a photo of him at his desk with a huge bed in the background - are there any records of the work that was done there and the families that were removed to N wales during the 2nd W war. I have just retired and looking now to trace my family history. I would like to come up and research that time. Is there a local history group please, when do they meet? I would like to coincide a visit and to meet and talk to others with locals' knowledge. I returned to Coventry in 1944 and was brought up by grandparents as my mother died up there shortly after my birth and the war years were never discussed. I have several old photos of street parties, and chilren in Penmenma and would like to bring them up to share with others. Any information please.
