Nathan Eades in action in South Africa Surf kayaking
Adrenalin:5
Cost: 5
Fitness: 4

As the name suggests, this outdoor activity is a cross between surfing, and kayaking. A specially designed kayak is used to ride the ocean waves, using the kayak to perform the same moves as a regular surfer. Nathan Eades is currently a student at the School of Education, Bangor. But when he isn't studying, Nathan is competing all over the world as a surf kayaker. He is currently British Champion, and is about to fly off to Tahiti to tackle some of the biggest waves in the world - waves that even the most fearless surfers won't dare to ride.

How did you get started?
I began kayaking at the age of 4 and loved it. At 15, I was asked to join the Welsh team, and began to learn how to surf-kayak.

Where did you go from there?
I first went to the surf kayaking world championships in Brasil when I was 15, and came fifth in the junior section. In 2001, I came second in the under 18s at the world championships in Santa Cruz, before becoming British champion in 2002.

I've also travelled to South Africa and Uganda for training, with sponsorship from the Welsh Canoeing Association.

What clothing and equipment do you need?
You'll need a kayak, paddles, spray deck, buoyancy aid, helmet and wet suit. Surf kayaking is quite expensive, but you can get a lot of the equipment second hand. Alternatively, the Welsh Canoeing Association does have 12 surf kayaks available to loan out.

What's your most memorable experience?
I was surf kayaking near Cape Town, South Africa, when a school of about 25 dolphins came to join us. They were surfing the waves with us - it was amazing.

Have you got a favourite place?
Hell's Mouth at the tip of Pen Llyn isn't bad, but the best place to surf in Wales if Fresh Water West, Pembrokeshire.

Where can I have a go?
You can try out surf kayaking at Plas Menai, Gwynedd.

Comment on this story

Michael, Northern Ireland
I have been kayaking for around 2 years and surf kayaking for about 8-9 months and it truly is the most amazing sport in the world, i surf a mega maverick plastic surf kayak but a play boat or a whitwater boat can be a good way to start as i had a dagger rpm an dthen a riot trickster before the maverick. try it - you will be amazed!
