Aberdyfi women's longboat team Longboating
Adrenalin:4
Cost: 1
Fitness: 2

Jen Slade from Llandrillo lets us in on the secret of the ancient Celtic tradition of longboating made modern.

How did you get started?
My brother used to row and I always wanted to myself, but I really joined Aberdyfi Rowing Club because my friend did and I liked the social side of things. But I got into the ladies team quite quickly and we began winning. We soon realised that with a little training, we could be really good!

Where did you go from there?
We won the Northern Longboating League, and the Great London River Race, which is 23 miles long and the marathon of the longboat rowing world.

What clothing and equipment do you need?
Longboat rowing is in a fixed seat boat, so because you slide up and down whilst rowing, it's good to have good quality shorts as they do get worn out. Apart from that, you just need trainers and a T-shirt.

What's your most memorable experience?
We were rowing out at sea in a race one day and my friend's shorts came down. We didn't want to lose our lead, so we didn't let her pull them up! It was fine out at sea and we thought the high sides of the boat would save her dignity when we came inshore, but we forgot about the people up on the cliff tops! We still won, even though we couldn't stop laughing!

Another great memory was winning the London river race because the competition is really intense. We were the first club to win both the men's and women's races.

Have you got a favourite place?
Aberdyfi estuary is the best. Especially on a calm night, when the sea's like a mill pond and we row out into the sunset, with the slap of the oars against the water. Sometimes the seals pop up around us to see who we are and the colours of the sun set are spectacular. We can be rowing out into a pink and blue sky and when it's reflected in the water it's like dipping your oars into paint.

It's also great because we're all together. Sometimes we just row out and sit on the water for a while before rowing back.

Who's your hero/heroine?
There aren't any famous longboat rowers because the sport doesn't get enough coverage on TV. I don't know why because a group of gorgeous girls in shorts and T-shirts should make great TV! Steve Redgrave is a hero though, of course.

Any other points?
People always think you have to be really fit to row, but you don't. We have all sorts of shapes, sizes and ages at the rowing club. I hate going to the gym by myself and I wasn't really that fit when I joined, but I have become fit through training with a group of friends.

If you do join, there's no need to be a member of the competitive teams. You can just row for fun.

Rowing also has a rather elitest reputation. You don't have to be posh to join a rowing club - everyone's welcome and there's a great social life afterwards in the bar.

Where can I have a go?
Most coastal towns in north west Wales have rowing clubs and they've usually got Celtic longboats. In fact, many clubs along the coasts of the Celtic nations - Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Brittany - compete in Celtic Longboating.

Sarah Roberts, Caernarfon, North Wales
The Caernarfon Celtic Rowing Club meets every Tuesday in the evening and every Sunday morning at Plas Menai, between Caernarfon and Bangor. All comers are welcome whatever age or ability. I started rowing a year ago and have thoroughly enjoyed our races and touring trips - Rhoscolyn where we got up close to the seals and seeing the Bryn Terfyl fireworks reflected in the Menai Strait during a nightime row. One of our teams won the Super Veteran race at Pwllheli and they are looking forward to our Castle to Castle Race in July 2008. I would recommend this sport to anyone - very sociable ! (we are members of the Royal Welsh Yacht Club) and challenging!

I tried longboating whilst on holiday in Barmouth. Being an inland oarsman I decided to go along to see what coastal rowing was like, What an experience, I enjoyed every minute of it, thanks to all the members of Mawddach Rowing Club particularly Jamie and Arthur who made me most welcome.

I joined the Mawddach Rowing Club about 2 years ago as a way of getting fit (still trying) and was instantly hooked. Its a great hobby/sport. The views you get from the water are amazing, a totally different perspective, especially the Mawddach estuary up to The George 3rd pub. We all know the sea can be deadly but with the right safety equipment and experience rowing on a choppy sea can be exhilarating!

Stephen Shakespeare, Porthmadog
Madoc Yacht Club, Porthmadog, has a great rowing club with many members, great social scene, A1 facilities and probably the best scenery in North Wales, whether you want clear views of Yr Wyddfa, Portmeirion, Harlech & Criccieth Castles then Porthmadog has the lot. Great physical excercise, great fun and probably one of the most relaxed rowing clubs around! Give it a shot.

There are sea rowing clubs at Pwllheli, Porthmadog, Caernarfon, Bull Bay (Ynys Mon) and Y Bermo. Rowing is a very sociable way to improve health and fitness, it is a very low cost way of getting into watersports, it allows you to see and appreciate aspects of Wales' extraordinarily beautiful coastline and marine life and it offers opportunities for competition (plenty of races) and fun. Rowers from Clwb Rhwyfo Pwllheli have won the mixed crew Celtic Longboat trophy in the annual Thames Great River Race for the last two years and one crew of three men and two women have just rowed across the Irish Sea from Porth Oer (Whistling Sands) to Wicklow (Ireland) in under eleven and half hours! If you're looking for fun and fitness come along to our Open Day (May 20th) or contact us about club sessions and give this great sport a try. (Our rowers' ages range from 18 to 60. Juniors, adult men and women, veterans - all welcome!

Have been rowing for 3 years. Marvellous sport for those that are a bit older (I'm 51). Have just finished the Celtic Challenge, a 100 mile row across the Irish Sea.

My sister and I turned up for our first ever rowing session with Aberystwyth Rowing Club just over 10 years ago. It was men's night but they let us have a go anyway! I've been hooked ever since. I'm now on the verge of returning to rowing (with Clwb Rhwyfo Pwllheli) after having a baby and I can't wait, especially knowing that within a few weeks I'll have a (long lost) flat stomach once again! Longboat rowing is a fantastic combination of competitive extreme sport and outdoor pursuit. Check out the notice board at the Glandon compound for info on Pwllheli club sessions.

I'm relatively new to rowing myself, I'm also from Aberdyfi Rowing Club and can honestly say it's one of the most enjoyable sports I've ever been involved with. It would be great for the promotion of the sport if we could attract more interest from the media and in turn receive financial support in the form of sponsership. The sport is great for all, especially girls and women of all ages. Head down to the coast in Wales and you won't have to go far before you find a Rowing Club - come and have a go! We meet at 12.00 most Saturdays.

Famous at last! Just wanted to say that South Wales has many more longboat clubs than North Wales. Also the men's league is a fiercely competitive league too. If you've competed in an impact sport like rugby and are looking for a less injurious team sport to move on to, then this is ideal. All the clubs are very sociable so get in touch if you've ever thought you'd like to try rowing. Men, women or juniors (14-18) you'd be very welcome.
