Ross Powell in the Peris Horseshoe Mountain Race 2002 Fell running
Adrenalin:5
Cost: 2
Fitness: 3

There's a fell running event happening somewhere in North West Wales almost every weekend, especially during the summer. Ross Powell from Upper Llandwrog has been competing for 25 years, and tells us about his experiences of the sport.

How did you get started?
I started off mountain walking, and found it wasn't fast enough for me, so I began to run. I had also done some orienteering in school, and so fell running was a natural progression from that.

Where did you go from there?
I began racing about 25 years ago. I've competed in most of the races round here, and still take part in the events which take place almost every weekend. I and the club have also competed in the British Championships.

I'm now chairman of the Eryri Harriers, the biggest fell running club in Wales, and I'm also chair of the Welsh Fell Runners Association.

What clothing and equipment do you need?
The regulations on fell running have been tightened up recently. You must now take a map, whistle, compass, waterproof and windproof top and bottoms. You should also take emergency food on longer races. It is also recommended to wear good fell running trainers, with studs on the bottom.

What's your most memorable experience?
It was great to run up and down Snowdon in 1hr 12 mins, and be up there with the international-standard fell runners. Snowdon is a tough race because it's different from other fell races, which usually take place on grassy ground. Running up Snowdon is a combination of fell and road racing and the terrain is quite hard-going.

Have you got a favourite place?
Ben Nevis is the best race in Britain, and I've run it about five or six times. Eryri (Snowdonia), where I live, is also a great place to run and it's where I do most of my training.

Who's your hero/heroine?
Joss Naylor was a great inspiration to me in the early days. He was a great fell runner from the Lake District and completed lots of epic runs.

Any other points?
Safety is an issue with fell running. It's important to have the right equipment and check the weather before you go out. I'd like to encourage people to get fell running. Some think you have to be really fit before you join our running club, but we cater for everybody. People of any ability can join, and take it as seriously as you want.

Where can I have a go?
The Eryri Harriers have members from all over North West Wales. There's also the Bro Dysynni Running Club, near Dolgellau.

Look after your knees! I used to do all these marvellous fell races (Welsh 1000s, Paps of Jura etc) but now I have to stick to cycling owing to knee pain. Also, the comment about six-minute miles not being very fit is a bit off-putting. Most average club runners would love to achieve that speed over long distances on the road. I used to manage 6.30 on the road at my best and still managed to achieve my target of finishing within 30% of fell race winning times.

Gavin is right - fell running is for anyone, you just build your routes to your experience and advance as your fitness, navigation skills and adaptability to different terrain develops. Just be respectful of your ability and the weather! Get into it! There are running guides in Snowdonia who teach people how to run safely in the mountains.

You don't really need to be that fit to fell run. The top lads and lasses are probably amongst the best athletes in the UK (although unknown outside of fell-running). I however, am not that fit and struggle to run at 6.00 minute mile pace these days, but can still do OK in races especially long slow ones requiring navigation and mountain skills. Go and have a go - but do take full waterproof bodycover with you and take it steady to start with

I've taken part in the 1000m peak race on four occasions and from Aber it's really a hard slog, but the toughest one anywhere is the Peris Horseshoe. Not quite as far as the 1000s but finishing it is an achievement in itself. I have yet to attempt the 15 peaks in a day, mainly because the weather has always been against me. My last attempt in 2004 left me very dehydrated at Ogwen but with favourable conditions I think I could come in under nine hours. Anyway I am competing in Eryri's Border League in the next couple of weeks so let's hope this arctic weather soon disappears.

I've done Cader Fell run the last couple of years. It's a bit different than road races - brilliant organised travel all over Britain doing marathons but always look forward to Cader Fell race. Beautiful scenert, made very welcome and there's free coffee, sandwich and homemade cake.

As a member of a newly formed fell running club in North Wales BETWS BRO MACHNO I would incourage anyone to try fell running. Some of the views are fantastic. Why not come and try a few of our fell races in the beautiful Machno Valley. Also a great chance for you to learn some of the Welsh language as there are many Welsh speakers in our Area. Gobeithio gweld chi yn fuan.
