Mark Handford Coasteering
Adrenalin:5
Cost: 1
Fitness: 3

Mark Handford, Deiniolen introduces us to the relatively new activity of coasteering. On land and in the sea, what a way to make the best of North west Wales's coastline if you're feeling energetic!

Coasteering is an adventure activity that includes short sections of traversing around sea cliffs close to the water as well as short swims and lots of jumps from the cliffs into the sea. Jumps can be from as low as one foot up to 20 feet! You just pick the height to jump from according to how confident you feel.

Coasteering is different to sea level traversing, which usually involves the use of ropes and climbing harnesses and the aim is to stay dry. Coasteering is more about getting wet, swimming and jumping and scrambling round rocks.

How did you get started?
I'm the director of Snowdonia Adventures and used to work as a freelance outdoor instructor. I tried coasteering on an in-house instructor training day and was instantly hooked and have been running coasteering sessions for about two years now. It's a superb activity and it gives you a real buzz, even though you feel pretty tired at the end of a session.

Coasteering has been around since the mid '80s but was more of a personal type of adventure sport. Over the past few years it has been developed into its own activity and the last year has seen a massive uptake in people wanting to give it a try, with magazines rating it as the 'must try activity of the year' helping to boost its popularity.

Where did you go from there?
x We ensured that we had enough suitably qualified instructors for us to run coasteering in a professional way. Whilst there are no national governing body awards relevant to coasteering, most activity providers follow a best practice policy and their instructors have minimum NGB qualifications such as mountain leader, SPA, level 2 REC first aid, Level 2 kayak coach and lots of previous coasteering experience with in-house training.

We wouldn't recommend the general public try this activity without guidance from experienced, qualified instructors

What clothing and equipment do you need?
All equipment will be provided for you - wetsuits, buoyancy aids, watersports helmets and a spray kagoul. All you need to bring is enthusiasm, adrenalin, a swimming costume, towel and spare pair of trainers.

What's your most memorable experience?
When you have competitive groups who want to try big jumps and then the peer pressure disappears and everyone is on a level playing field, it's great. It really gets a group's teamwork going and the enthusiasm and support for those who may be a bit concerned is brilliant.

Any other points?
You don't have to be super fit, just be able to swim confidently.

Where can I have a go?
There are many locations round the coast of Anglesey which are great for coasteering. Snowdonia Adventures - Deiniolen, Surf-lines - Llanberis, Outlook expeditions - Deiniolen.

I was lucky enough to coasteer a couple of years ago with Shaggy Sheep Wales, Pembs. It was excellent fun, if not a little twitchy! Some of the jumps were monsters. Loved it so much have booked with breathingspace, Devon as a farewell to do before a few of us head off into the blue wide yonder.

We had a stag weekend in Wales and tried coasteering and climbing with Snowdonia Adventures, It was absolutely brilliant, even though the sea was calm we had a great time just swimming and trying jumps from different heights. The instructors were very professional and had a great passion for their work, I'll definitely be going coasteering again.
