Wyn Davies

Wyn Davies An international footballer and Toon Army hero.

Born:
20 MAR 1942
Place of Birth:
Caernarfon
Biography:
Ronald Wyn Davies started his footballing career with Deiniiolen before moving to play for Llanberis in the Caernarfon area league, whilst working at the slate mine in the town.

Before long, he was signed by Caernarfon Town from the Welsh League (North), and began to attract attention from bigger clubs such as Aston Villa and Manchester United.

But he decided to stay in Wales, moving to the Race Course, Wrexham and helping them to win the Welsh Youth Cup in 1960. He made his league debut in 1961, scoring a goal in the game where Wrexham beat Worcester 3-1.

His ability to win the ball in the air heightened the interest from larger clubs, and he was signed to Bolton Wanderers for £20,000 in 1962. His parting gift to Wrexham was to score three goals in the team's historic 10-1 win over Hartlepool.

Wyn won his first cap for Wales in a game against England at Wembley in 1964. He went on to play for his country 34 times, scoring six goals over a period of ten years.

He scored 66 goals in 155 games for Bolton before moving on to Newcastle United for £80,000 in 1966 - a record sum for the club at that time. He played his first game for the Magpies against their arch rivals, Sunderland, in October 1966 and soon became a hero at St James's Park. His skills in the air earned him the nicknames 'Wyn the leap' and 'The Mighty Wyn' from the Geordie faithful.

He was part of the 1969 Newcastle team which beat the Hungarian team Ujpesti Dozsa to win the Inter-City Fairs Cup - the forerunner to the UEFA cup.

Wyn scored 40golsin 180 games at St James's Park before moving to Manchester City in 1971. He almost won the league with his new club in his first season with them, but the Manchester club missed out by just one point.

After losing his place in the City team to Rodney Marsh, Wyn made the move across Manchester to play for United in September 1972. But his time there was short and he moved on to Blackpool, then Stockport County and Crewe Alexandra.

A knee injury forced him out of the professional game, though he did manage to play a handful of games for Bangor City before moving to Bolton to begin a new career as a baker. He's still in Bolton, and has lots of pleasure in going for a walk with his dogs each day.

Recognised him in Weatherspoons Bolton one lunch time this week. He chatted to us briefly about his time at Manchester United. A nice genuine man it seemed to me.

I just remember the way Wyn and "Pop" Robson worked together. What a dream combination they were.

As a Magpies fan I recall how Wyn's aerial power terrorised the continental defences during the Fairs Cup years. I regard him as Joe Harvey's best ever signing and only wish he had been at St James Park another year to team up with Malcolm Macdonald.

Wyn Davies was probably Joe Harvey's best signing. Had he been given better service from the wings his goal tally would have been greater. As it was, he provided countless match-winning opportunities for those such as Pop Robson and we'd have suffered greatly without him.

Wyn was my boyhood hero. My bedroom walls were covered with posters and newspaper cuttings of his exploits in the black and white shirt. My favourite one was captioned "Ambush" It was in the away game in '69 against Victoria Setubal (I think) and it showed Wyn seemingly flying, miles off the ground being surrounded by four or five of the earthbound opposition. Cracking picture.Despite the recent fantastic achievments of Alan Shearer, Wyn remains my favourite ever Newcastle player. Have a long and happy retirement Wyn!

I lived near Wyn in Pelton during those great days. He was a fantastic character - very friendly and down to earth. He was my hero and always will be - a proper footballer - very brave!

Many happy memories of Wyn - on and off the field. He was homesick when he first came to Newcastle, and used to visit us (Mam is from Criccieth) after training sometimes. Picked me up from school a couple of times when I was 8 or 9 and was mobbed by all my friends. Never thought he'd be in the team that last won us a trophy! Happy Birthday Wyn.

I saw Wyn Davies at almost all of his home games for Newcastle and for quite a number away. The finest goal I ever saw was his headed goal when Albert Bennet sent a cross from the left-wing near the corner flag. The day was very windy and the ball was blown away from the goalmouth (Gallowgate End) toward the centre spot as it traversed the pitch. Wyn, forced to dive horizontally about 3 feet above the ground, and away from the goal at an angle of about 90 degrees, showed his very great abilities in twisting his head to score a superb goal: a picture published next day the Sunday papers caugh! t this moment superbly. I cannot remember whom the opposition were that day, or even the year, beyond to state that it was about 1968, but what a goal - I'll never forget that. Best wishes to the "Mighty Wyn" and to all true players and supporters of the great game.
