Matthew Maynard was one of the mainstays of Glamorgan Cricket Club's team for over ten years, helping them to many memorable victories.
Matthew Maynard grew up in Menai Bridge, and always showed a flair for sport - most particularly, cricket. He played for his school side, and for the North Wales XI against Barbados in 1982 before moving down south and taking the professional game by storm.
Matthew burst onto the County Cricket scene with tremendous style in 1985, when he scored his maiden century for Glamorgan against Yorkshire, hitting three successive sixes past England bowler Phil Carrick. Since then Matthew has thrilled Glamorgan and Welsh cricket fans with his dashing strokeplay, batting his way to a series of club records.
By 1986, he'd become the youngest ever Glamorgan player to score over 1,000 runs and a year later managed a swift century before lunch against Somerset. The presence of Viv Richards at Glamorgan in 1990 helped spur Matthew and the team on and he remained a prolific run scorer, reaching a career best of 243 against Hampshire. After spending two seasons gaining valuable experience playing for New Zealand's Northern districts team, Matthew returned to help Glamorgan to the Sunday League title of 1993.
As captain of his club, Matthew led Glamorgan to their nail-biting championship victory in 1997 and their Benson and Hedges Cup victory at Lords in 2000.
Matthew made his Test debut for England in August 1988 against the West Indies at the Oval, and though he scored few runs, by the end of that summer he was voted young cricketer of the year. He went on to tour South Africa with Mke Gatting's XI in 1990 and took part in the Ashes series of 1992.
In 2007 he was appointed Glamorgan's cricket manager.
