Timothy Dalton
- Biography:
-
Timothy Dalton has acted in many films and TV programmes, but it's as the suave, sophisticated James Bond that he'll be remembered.
One of five children, he was born and lived in Colwyn Bay whilst his father was based there during the war. He moved to Derbyshire at the age of four, and, with an increasing interest in the acting business, joined the National Youth Theatre and played Little Malcolm and his Struggle against the Reunuchs. His first film role came in 1968s The Lion In Winter, and Timothy went on to star in other successful films such as Permission to Kill and Flash Gordon. His ability to play brooding, romantic and dashing lead men was proven in his portrayals of Mr Rochester in a television adaptation of Jane Eyre, and the mysterious and wild Heathcliffe in Wuthering Heights. But it is for Secret Agent 007 that Timothy Dalton is most well known - despite having previously turned down the role of the suave martini-drinking spy in 1968. This turned out to be a wise decision, for as Timothy feared, Sean Connery's shoes would be very hard to fill - and George Lazenby, of On Her Majesty's Secret Service sank without trace. By 1987, however, Timothy was happy to take over the mantel from Roger Moore, and starred in Living Daylights and Licence to Kill before Pierce Brosnan took up the gauntlet.
