Mark Roberts, now a successful producer, was one of the creative talents behind one of the best bands to come out of Wales - Catatonia.
Mark Roberts was first known on the Welsh music scene as guitarist for Y Cyrff (The Bodies), a band he formed whilst still at school in Llanrwst, before leaving the band in 1991 and moving to Cardiff. According to legend, Mark came across Cerys Matthews busking outside an optician's in Cardiff. Her guitar was missing a string and he had just the right one - and so Catatonia was born. Whatever the truth, Catatonia was formed featuring Cerys on vocals, Mark on guitar, Owen Powell on guitar and fellow Cyrff members, Paul Jones, bass and Aled Richards, drums. They became one of the hottest bands on the indie music scene of the 1990s. In 1993, Catatonia signed to Crai records and their first ever single, For Tinkerbell, was named NME single of the week. They gained further recognition and radio play with You've Got a Lot to Answer For, before releasing the critically-acclaimed Way Beyond Blue (1996). But Catatonia didn't reach the big time until the release of the anthemic Mulder & Scully (1998), followed up by the number one album International Velvet. After the release of Equally Cursed and Blessed (1999), Catatonia split up and the members have scattered to follow their own projects, Mark as a successful producer for many Welsh bands.
