Dawn French

Dawn French A much-loved comedienne with partner Jennifer Saunders.

Born:
11 OCT 1957
Place of Birth:
Holyhead
School:
Boarding school, Plymouth
Trivia:
Since her famous Comic Relief 'charity snog' with Hugh Grant, Dawn French has managed to get some of the world's sexiest men to kiss her (all in the name of fun, of course!) Her other conquests include Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, gorgeous George Clooney and the loveable Lenny Henry (of course!)
Biography:
Dawn French is one of Britain's leading comedy performers - but what most people don't know is that she was born in North West Wales.

Dawn was born in Y Gors maternity home in Holyhead, as her father served in nearby RAF Valley. She was sent to boarding school in Plymouth and studied in New York before enrolling in the Central London School of Speech and Drama where she trained to be a teacher. More importantly, it was where she met the other half of what was to become one of the most popular female comedy acts in Britain.

Though much of Dawn's television work has been alongside Jennifer Saunders, both later branched out into solo projects. Whilst Jennifer concentrated on her critically acclaimed sitcom, Absolutely Fabulous, Dawn has starred in the hit Richard Curtis comedy drama, The Vicar of Dibley and more recently Wild West.

She now lives in Berkshire with her comedian husband Lenny Henry, and their daughter Billie.

I still think they're past their sell-by date, some three and a half years after making my initial comments, despite folks thinking I need my "head testing" or calling me a "plum" (whatever that is intended to mean). There's by far more funnier people on the telly. Now if she (French) stuck to mainstream acting, something which she is good at, then it'd be a whole different story. I have to admit, she's absolutely hilarious in "Jam and Jerusalem" as the village dimwit and which I am%2! 0reliably informed returns to our screens this coming September. It just goes to show that when French and Saunders put their minds to it, they can actually pen good quality viewing - as "Jam and Jerusalem" proves!

Interesting reading the comments about the Gors Maternity Hospital as my Mother oversaw the transformation from a Military Hospital [she was appointed Matron here] to a Maternity Unit. As a small child I can remember sitting on piles of bricks watching the workmen doing the rebuilding. My Mother, Grace Roberts-Jones, also arranged that the small wards were painted in pastel colours with linens to match. This was quite a modern idea as everything in Hospitals was white.

In 1959 my best friend was Christine French at RAF Upavon. She had a daughter and we had so many great times together. Could it be Dawn's mum? She would remember boiling nappies and prickly cockles. My two sons are Mark and Paul, we had many happy times together in our married quarters.

Dawn French provides super insights into the "Human Condition". We only see her in reruns over here. Is she doing any current projects, i.e. do we have something to look forward to?

I too was born at the Gors Hospital, in 1960. I had no idea that the multi-talented Dawn French was born there. Although the hospital has been converted into flats (at least they didn't demolish it!) I feel that Holyhead town council should be made aware of the fact that Dawn was born there and commemorate the event with a plaque. Let's hope they read this!

I became familiar with Dawn's work while living in Lancashire. My daughter was a toddler then and we got used to hearing Dawn's voice on Kipper the dog "books on tape". Back in the US, thanks to BBC America, we were able to see her in the Vicar of Dibley and just adore her. We look forward to our evening episode as she makes all the nasty bits of the day go away. She makes us go to bed at night with a smile on our faces. Thank you Dawn!

I myself, am a large lady and she has often made me feel better about myself when i think about all the things she's achieved in her career and this has in turn made me want my career in acting more than anything in the world. I think that anyone who has a problem with her work should be ashamed of themselves. If they can't learn to accept other people's views then they are going to have a difficult life. Dawn's writing is inspirational and many of the things she's written have all bought a little realism to our lives.Good on her!

That Lynda wat a plum! we could do without people like her with all this "Politically correctness". i think it's time some people let their hair down and stopped being so uptight all the time. If she felt "uncomfortable" then why the hell didn't she just turn the thing over.

French and saunders are highly talented writers and actors who please the public with their imaginatively fabulous sketches so why should they stop because they have a little complaint from some old fashioned maverick?

I just love the Vicar of Dibley and Dawn French. I can't wait to tell my Kiwi friends that she was born in Holyhead; 4 of my sisters were born at the same hospital, unfortunately I was a home birth.

I live for Saturday nights just so I can watch the hilarious and loveable bunch from Dibley. I think Geraldine and the whole cast are the most talented ensemble on tv today. You never disappoint and this comes from my heart. I am a fan for life.

Having just watched a pathetic Xmas Special (27 Dec 2005), which featured a sketch involving Ms French and Ms Saunders dressing up babies as "celebrities", I wrote a complaint to the BBC, to which I am awaiting a response. The babies' demeanour clearly highlighted the fact that they did not want to participate in the whole charade, and I found it very uncomfortable viewing, as did my husband. We're not a couple of old "has-beens"; rather I am 34 and my husband is 39 - not even eligible to be included in any inference to Mary Whitehouse and her Listeners' and Viewers' Association! Having watched French and Saunders over the years (and found many laughs) I now feel that they are scraping the barrel by using babies and infants in order to get their sniggers. It's evident that she (Ms French) and her comedic cohort are past their sell-by date and high time they left the tv schedules for good.
