William Morris Hughes

W M Hughes and Mary Hughes: ref. NAA: A3560, 748 Prime Minister of Australia during WWI.

Born:
25 SEP 1862
Place of Birth:
Pimlico, London
School:
Primary school at Cwlach Road, Llandudno
St Stephen's School, London
Biography:
William Morris Hughes was the first Australian Prime Minister to give his country a voice on the international stage, during WWI.

He was born in Pimlico, London, but educated in Llandudno. His former school is marked by a plaque on the wall of what is now a private home on Cwlach Road, on the Great Orme in Llandudno.

He moved to London in 1872 and worked as a student-teacher in 1874. In 1884, he emigrated to Australia, where he met and married Elizabeth Cutts and they had six children - Ethel, Williams, Lily, Dolly, Ernest and Charles. After Elizabeth's death in 1906, Williams married Mary Ethel Campbell on June 26 1911, in Christ Church, South Yarra, Melbourne. They had one daughter, Helen.

William Morris Hughes was active in Australian politics, and became a member of Australia's House of Representatives in 1901. He still holds the record for being the longest serving MP, remaining a member of the House of Representatives until 1952.

He became Prime Minister in 1915, and was a prominent supporter of the war in Europe. In 1916, W W Hughes visited Britain and the Australian troops in France, and became the first minister to officially represent Australia abroad as an independent nation. He returned to Europe in 1919 to take part in the Versailles peace negotiations.

He remained in office until 1922, and was an MP until his death in Sydney on October 28 1952.

My grandfather Charles Hughes was the youngest son of William Hughes. My grandfather told me his mother was Spanish. My grandfather and his sister Lily left Australia when they were quite young to live in New Zealand.

Our family history records that my wife's great-great-grandfather Joseph Henry Jackson, along with two others including William Hughes, father of Billy Hughes discovered a gold nugget at Bakery Hill (near Ballarat) on 10/6/1858. Our history records that this was the Welcome Nugget, but this is not supported by other records (this nugget contained 2197 oz of pure gold), but it may have been some lesser nugget that they found. However, I can find no record of William Hughes ever migrating to Australia, let alone finding gold there, before returning to England to marry and fathering Billy Hughes. Can anyone help me here?

William Hughes was born in the house right behind our hotel (Blades Hotel, Pimlico SW1) and we tell every Australian guest - almost everyone has their photo taken in front of his former home.

According to the 1881 Census Billy Hughes' father William Hughes and his sister Mary were born in Holyhead. Billy's mother Jane is supposed to have been 'in service' in London prior to her marriage and presumably met her future husband William Hughes there. It would be interesting to know when Mary Hughes moved to Llandudno and whether William Hughes lived there before his move to work as a joiner at Westminster.

My great great grandfather David Hughes (who died in South Australia in 1878) was Billy Hughes' uncle or to put it nother way, William Hughes (Billy's father) and my David were brothers. Only problem, who were the parents of William and David? I have some leads pointing to Llanbadrig and Bettws. Any help anyone?Shirley, Clifton Springs, Australia

My father's grandparents (Hughes/Morris) were from this area. My aunt is Elizabeth Morris Hughes. Great grandfather moved to England. He was among the first in the country to have a radio installed in his automobile. It was gigantic. I have a photograph of the vehicle with radio that appeared in a local newspaper. I am going to come to Llandudno with my aunt on March 31 2007 for only one day to breathe the air of my ancestors!

William Morris Hughes was Australia’s longest serving Prime Minister until 1957 when Robert Menzies overtook Hughes’ record term from 1915 to 1923. Hughes’ other record still stands: no parliamentarian has surpassed his 51 years and 7 months of continuous service as a member of Australia’s House of Representatives – from the 1st parliament in 1901 to the 20th in 1952. He was my mother's uncle's brother's step dad's auntie's great-great grandmother's dad's grandmother's brother!

William Morris Hughes was a cousin of my gg/father( Walter Morris d.o.b. 1853 and headmaster of St. George's School in Deal.

The following is what A. Dorothy - the above being her g/father wrote about Billy:

'Grandpa had a cousin, William Morris Hughes, who went to Australia. Auntie Ethel remembered being taken to the docks when all the family went to wave him good bye. In those days,if you went to Australia you never expected to see your family again. He became the Prime Minister of Australia, but we did not know this until he died. His picture was in our papers, along with his abituary, which spoke of his characteristics, one of which was his pawkish humour - just like grandpa! In fact he looked just like grandpa, and also Dad.

The Australians thought well of him because he stuck up for them at the conference of Versailles, at the end of the first world war. In Australia he was known as Billy Hughes. When Catherine (her sister, another aunt) was in Australia we went to canberra, and were looking round the hall in Parliament building where there were all the busts of the Prime Ministers. Suddenly we both stopped and exclaimed together "Dad!" The likeness was so exact. And when we looked at the inscription, we saw that it was the bust of Billy Hughes!

Billy Hughes was born at no 7 Moreton Place, Pimlico London, the only child of William and Jane Hughes. William was a native of Llandudno and Jane a native of Llansantffraid, Powys. On May 28th 1869 his mother was killed in a rail accident at Glastonbury, on her way to visit her parents. After the funeral William Morris Hughes was sent here to live with his father's sister Miss Mary Hughes at "Bryn Rosa", Abbey Road Llandudno. We live at Bryn Rosa and there is also a plaque here to mark his childhood home. Before attending the school in Cwlach Road he attended McLaughlan's school which was at the corner of Lloyd St. and Chapel St. where the Welsh Wesleyan Chapel was and now is the Emmanuel Centre.
