William Morgan

William Morgan Translator of the Bible into Welsh.

Born:
1545
Place of Birth:
Ty Mawr Wybrnant, Penmachno
Trivia:
William Morgan is one of news presenter Huw Edwards' favourite people. Find out why here.
Biography:
William Morgan is thought to be one of the most influential figures in Welsh history, pivotal in the safeguarding of the Welsh language.

William Morgan was born at Ty Mawr Wybrnant, Penmachno; a house now owned by the National Trust. He studied at Cambridge before being ordained as a deacon in the Church of England and becoming vicar of Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, Denbighshire, and Archbishop of St Asaph in 1601.

But his greatest contribution was his painstaking translation of the Bible into Welsh, thereby not only enabling the people of Wales to worship in their own language, but also safeguarding the future of the language.

Historians agree that the Welsh language was in danger of disintegrating into half a dozen dialects before William Morgan set a uniform standard of Welsh, to be emulated by writers of poetry and prose thereafter.

I understand that one of my great grandparents was a custodian of Ty Mawr. Anyone information about the locality as it was 140 years ago would be appreciated.

My Nain was born in Ty Mawr and her middle name is Morgan. My auntie lived there with her husband and dog. Myself and my partner had a beautiful baby boy in march 2007 and have proudly called him Morgan Wyn, after my nain's middle name and my auntie's middle name. We will be visiting soon for Morgan to see where he got his name from.

All my family come from Holyhead and before my mother died she had been researching family history. She had information to say that we are related to William Morgan - my mother's surname was Lloyd-Lyons and on my father's side Hughes Roberts. My parents along the line were fourth cousins. Hopefully my family and I will be able to visit our ancestor's home.

My Grandmother's family is from North Wales, and I have always been told that William Morgan has some ties to our home-Tynddol. In fact, all of the family grave stones bear the phrase "eb Tynddol". Does anyone have information about this connection with our home?
