"It's not your own life, it's the crew. When I thought I could do something spectacular and very risky I had to remember that I was risking other lives as well." Dick Evans
Biography:
Moelfre lifeboat coxswain Dick Evans is one of the few sailors ever to have won the Royal National Lifeboat Institution gold medal for bravery twice.

Richard (Dick) was born in a small cottage overlooking the sea at Moelfre, Anglesey. His father, William Evans, was a sea captain and member of the Moelfre liveboat crew, as had been Dick's uncle and both his grandfathers.

Dick himself left the village to join a coaster's crew when he was 14, and soon rose through the ranks as a seaman. He returned to Moelfre to run a butcher's business and married farmer's daughter Nansi.

In 1954 Dick was asked to became coxswain of the Moelfre lifeboat after his uncle John Matthews, himself recipient of the silver RNLI medal, retired.

He received his first gold medal for bravery from the RNLI when he helped rescue the stricken Hindlea on October 27 1959. In a hurricane, with winds gusting up to 104mph, Dick and his crew rescued the crew of the Hindlea as 48 foot waves pounded the lifeboat.

Dick won his second gold medal at the age of 61, for his efforts to help save the crew of the Greek freighter Nafsiporos, which had lost power in a cyclone and was drifting dangerously close to the notorious Skerries islands off Holyhead. With his crew of Murley Francis, Hugh Owen, Evan Owen, Huw Jones, William Maynard Davies, Capt David Jeavons and his own son, David, Dick helped rescue the crew off the ship, despite sustaining great damage to the lifeboat.

As a youngster I met him several times at his home. Later he signed and gave me a copy of his book which I still have.As for the often mentioned Captain JD Jeavons, I sailed with him as a junior officer for 5 months on the Empress of Canada. Two very fine seamen from a village famous for its seafaring traditions.

I recall very well when the Hindlea was in destress. Myself and my father together with many others were standing on the headland watching the lifeboat, with Richard Evans and the crew carrying out the successful rescue of the men on board the Hindlea. Memory of this event will stay with me forever.

I knew Dick Evans as a friend of my parents. My father Capt JD Jeavons was with Dick Evans when he won his second gold medal for the Nafsiporos rescue. (My father won a bronze medal). My father died in 1994, and my mother died inFebruary 2006. I remember Dick (or Coxswain Evans as I was taught to address him!) giving me some money as a reward for passing my GCEs! Lovely man.

I am distantly related to "Uncle Dick" - my Father, Hugh Meirion Williams and Grandmother Maggie (Moranedd) Williams were both born and bred in Moelfre. I used to visit regulary as a child and remember visiting Uncle Jack, Uncle Dick, Uncle Hugh and Aunty Eirwen. I visit Moelfre with my husband and children for weekends away when I can. I sometimes bump into the odd face I remember, but I would love to know more about my family. My son is very proud of his heritage and it has been said that he is like (in temperament and looks) his grandad. Won't be many arguments ahead then!

Dick Evans and my great grandfather were cousins. My grandmother Katie Duglan (nee Owen) has spoke about when she and Dick met and she learnt about his time as a lifeboatman. I've just finished reading (probably one of many) a book about him and was greatly inspired by his actions. Not just as an individual but as a leader of men, men with families...that's a true leader.

Dick Evans' parents were Cpt Wm Evans and Ellen nee Mathews of Bay View, Moelfre. John Mathews, Ellen's brother was the previous Coxwain of the Moelfre Lifeboat, he was also a deacon in the local Congregational chapel. He had a strong baritone voice and would lead the hymn singing in the services. Another Unle of Dick's was The Rev. Richard Mathews Congregational Minister Bethel, Caernarvonshire in the 40s. It would appear that Dick inherited his Uncle Richard's gift of public speaking, since he was frquently called upon at R.N.L.I functions following his retirement from the Lifeboat.

Dick Evans' grandparents were John Evans & Catherine nee Lill who lived in Penrallt Moelfre. His great grandparent being John and Jane Evans Aelwyd Isaf Moelfre.

When not in the RNLI Station in Moelfre Dick Evans enjoyed crab fishing in the Bay and would share part of his luscious catch with my mother who kept a shop on the beach next to the home of Margaret Roth now in Mission Texas. Dick's paternal grandmother came from Liverpool and her maiden name was Lill according to his cousin Phyllis wife of W.Maynard Davies crew member. I remember Margaret Roth's grandparents Owen ! Owens and Robert her father who received a Bronze Medal for the rescue of the crew of Excell.

He was a kind special man, like his son, my father William, who sadly passed away a month after my grandfather, and I miss them both dearly.

RE: Joan Wilcockson's question regarding Captain David Jeavons. Capt Jeavons used to live in Moelfre when I was growing up in the village in the 80s and 90s. My recollection of him is as a very tall man! He has now sadly passed away. Mrs Jeavons is still alive and lives at Pant Gaseg, Moelfre.

John Owen Ex. Beaumaris lifeboatman
I knew Dick Evans quite well, and once took a first aid exam with him in the Primary School in Beaumaris, we went in to the room to see the examining Dr. It turned out Dick knew him well, and the rest was plain sailing! He always used to say, that he was always "afraid" of coming to Beaumaris in the dark, when landing a casualty or something, because of the Menai Strait'S difficult channel in a blow.

I was wondering if the Captain David Jeavons who was one of the lifeboat's crew is still alive? I sailed from England to Canada in the Canadian Pacific ship, "Empress of England" on which Captain Jeavons was serving as Staff Commander at that time, back in 1962.

The lifeboat used is the Hindlea rescue was the Edward and Mary Robinson. The usual Moelfre lifeboat was being serviced at the time, so they took delivery of that boat in the meantime. My brother decided to track its whereabouts down a few years ago, and discovered it was being used as a houseboat on the Canal at Worcester. The other long serving Moelfre lifeboat, the Watkins Williams Wyn, is on display in a museum in Cardiff.

I knew "Uncle Dick" very well as a child and teenager living in Moelfre. I remember his bravery as Coxswain of the Lifeboat. My own father was given the Bronze Medal under his command. I remember him more in his role as butcher. His shop was so very clean and inviting. My last encounter with him was when I returned to Moelfre to introduce my American husband to my family. "Uncle Dick" and the other retired seamen treated him as one of their own!
