RS Thomas

RS Thomas: courtesy University of Wales, Bangor/Martin Roberts Renowned Welsh poet nominated for Nobel Prize.

Born:
1913
Died:
2000
Place of Birth:
Cardiff
Biography:
Ronald Stuart Thomas is one of Wales' most prominent poets and, as a sign of his contributions, was nominated for the Nobel prize for literature.

He was raised and educated in Holyhead and, after graduating from Bangor University, became a minister for the Church in Wales.

RS Thomas' poetical works are usually divided into two periods of his life. As a Minister in Trefaldwyn and Ceredigion, his work mostly concerns the lives and politics of the Welsh rural communities, as depicted in Reservoir and Looking at Sheep.

Following his move to Aberdaron in 1967, RS Thomas turns to religion as a theme and explored his difficult relationship with God. Examples of work from this time include Echoes, The Bright Field and The Bush.

He also wrote many non-poetical works in Welsh, including his autobiography, Neb (No One). He retired to Llanfairynghornwy, Anglesey, in 1978 before moving to Pentre Felin, Criccieth where he died in 2000.
