"You can say things that you can't say any way else. You can call a man an absolute expletive and be sued for libel, but you can imply so many things in a drawing and they can't get you for it. At least I don't think they can." Ralph on cartoons." Ralph Steadman
Biography:

Ralph Steadman is one of the most prolific cartoonists and illustrators to come out of Wales. The new creative suite at Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan's art department was opened by him, and named in his honour.

Ralph, son of Gwendoline and Raphael Steadman - a ladies knickers salesman and keen home-made wine producer - was brought up in Abergele. After finishing his schooling in North Wales, he studied art at the London School of Printing and Graphic Arts.

He then embarked on a hugely successful career, drawing satirical cartoons for Punch, Private Eye, The New Statesman and the Daily Telegraph.

Ralph has also illustrated many books, including:

  • Jelly Book (1967)
  • The Yellow Flowers (1968)
  • The Little Red Computer (1969)
  • The Tale of Driver Grope (1969)
  • Scar Strangled Banger (1988)
  • Gonzo (autobiographical) (1997)

Memories of Ralph Steadman making balsa planes with my brother Keith. Drawing on our kitchen table. My mother tidying up after he had left to go home, and horror of horrors, throwing all those drawings onto the kitchen fire!

Ralph Steadman was my cousin Albert Davies's best friend. Although I was four years younger I was occasionally allowed to play with them and John Pye, the dentist's son. My last memory of Abergele was in 1947 when we finally left for Liverpool. Ralph came out to say 'Goodbye' and I remember seeing him through the car window and waving to him for the last time.

From what I remember Ralph Steadman was my Godfather. My parents, Emrys Lloyd Hughes and Leticia Harris, died when I was 3 and 4 years old - I don't remember ever meeting him. We used to live in Clwyd Avenue, then when my parents died my sister Gwynfa and I moved in with my Grandparents in Gele Avenue.

Ralph Steadman's father and Mr Tommy Sudelle of Pensarn used to beachcomb together on Pensarn beach. They would recover "useful pieces of wood" back to Mr Sudelle's shed where they would saw them up into even more convenient useful sizes! I have a drawing by Ralph showing his quite tall father dressed in a long black coat looking disparagingly down on rather diminutive Mr Sudelle looking up rather sadly after he had cut his finger on the circular saw cutting the timber. Mr Suddele(Uncle Tom) worked in the ticket office at Pensarn railway station. He and Aunty Dollie practised regularly on viola or fiddle%! 20and piano in a quartet at their home in Pensarn. My daughter still plays their piano.

I see that there are references to him living in Pensarn and Towyn. Can't dispute this but he spent most of his early years as an evacuee in Clwyd Avenue in Abergele. Can't remember the number but it was at the top, futhest away from the Catholic church, about four houses down.

Ralph Steadman actually lived in a ground floor flat in Pensarn in the early fifties. My family at that time lived in a flat on South Parade. To the best of my knowledge he never lived in Towyn. He is about 4 years older than me and got me interested in model making, he used to make balsa wood and paper gliders and planes.

I too remember Ralph Steadman and Vaudrey Jones as they were choir boys with me at St Michael's Parish Church in Abergele.

I never met Ralph Steadman because I was not from Abergele. My late wife used to talk about him, she was at Abergele Grammar School the same time as R.S., at that time she said He was very good in the art class. He lived in Towyn, Abergele which is a village between Abergele and Rhyl. I wish I could remember more of what she said about him.
