I am researching Sir Kyffin Williams, who worked and hunted with Captain Jack Jones, Ynysfor. Captain Jack was, according to Nikolai Tolstoy, the basis for the character of Captain Jack Aubrey in Master and Commander (The Far Side of the World). I am trying to discover if there were communications between Sir Kyffin and Patrick O'Brian regarding their common interests of art, literature and Wales (hunting, Croesor and Porthmadog).

I was taught art by Kyffin at Highgate School. The man was a great teacher although, alas, he did not have much luck getting me to paint anything very well (That was 100% my fault!)He did, however, manage to get me to appreciate art.

When was Sir Kyffin Williams born? We have read that he was born on May the 9 and April the 5 - which one is true?

Sir Kyffin joined us for lunch in Llanfairpwllgwyn, on October 29 2005, having first demurred. He was delightful company and we were so pleased to spend an afternoon with him. We feel a "hireath" for his wonderful paintings. We wish him good fortune on his onward journey.

I had the pleasure of speaking to Sir Kyffin this year. He was humorous, passionate and self depreciating. He was generous with praise, where it was due. He had a credibility and integrity that only comes with age and time.

A very sad day for the world of art especially Welsh art. Sir Kyffin was a giant amongst artists, his strong views and beliefs was matched only by the stronger images he painted. His love of Wales was there for all to see.He will be sadly missed.

I was fortunate enough to meet Kyffin on a few occasions and had the opportunity to discuss his work. He was a most approachable, kind and gentle man. It was a pleasure and a privilege to be in his company.
I am convinced that there are artists painting today who may not have considered taking up the profession without the influence Kyffin has had. The interest the general public of Wales has in welsh art these days is also primarily due to his influence.
He will be sadly missed.

During the recent heatwave have caught up on books, including "The Land & The Sea" by Kyffin Williams and was curious to know where Pwllfanogl is. Have always enjoyed his work since seeing an exhibition in Cambridge in the 60s with a friend from Bangor. I was at UCNW '58-'62, reading Maths, and have never lost my fondness for North Wales.
Web team: Pwllfanogl is on the shores of the Menai Strait at Llanfairpwll.
