We're not slags

Last updated: 31 August 2006

Allanah, a pupil at Cyfle a school for young mums, tackles some of the accusations which, she says, teenage mums have to face:

'They're uneducated'
For most of them, getting pregnant was a mistake.
Most worked hard at school and are educated.

'They are all little slags'
For many of them the father of the baby is the only person they have slept with.

'They will be on all the benefits thay can get'
If the girl is under 16 she can't claim anything until she is 16.
It is also very difficult for a parent/guardian to claim for them.

'It's their parent's fault'
It can't be their parent's fault because they wouldn't want their child to have a baby at a young age.
It isn't their parent's fault they got pregnant; they didn't force her to have sex.

'They are lazy and will never get a job'
Teenage mums try to get a good job to support their child and get it everything the child needs.
Young mums are like every other mum, they all want the best for their child.

'They only get pregnant to get out of school'
They stay in school until they are at least 28 weeks' gone.
Then they go to a young mother and baby unit.
After 2 weeks' maternity leave they have the choice to go back to school or return to the unit where there is a crèche.

'They can't look after a child'
Many of the young mums are very good with their children and coping with them.

'Their children will be dragged up'
They are mothers and will love their child the same as an older mother.
They will also have parents and family to support them.

'They think they will have an easy life now'
No matter how old you are it is still difficult to look after a child.
Teenage mothers do find it hard being a mum.

'They should be made to have abortions'
It is entirely the girl's choice.
Parents or guardians can't tell her what to do because it's her baby.
Some older mothers can't look after their children and put them in care.
