Coping as a young mum

Last updated: 31 August 2006

Allanah, a pupil at Cyfle, a school for young mums, explains the rules she's followed to help her to cope.

  • Get as much sleep as possible even if it means sleeping through the day.
  • Don't lose your temper when the baby is crying as he/she is crying for a reason.
  • Always take the help that has been offered to you.
  • Prepare all of the baby's bottles before you go to bed or go out for the whole day as this way you will only have to heat up the bottle instead of making a new one each time.
  • If the baby is cracking you up by crying, don't lose your temper, check they aren't hungry, need their nappy changed or winding, and that they are not too hot or cold. First try to stop them from crying. If not, make sure they are safe and walk out of the room. This will mean you have got time to cool down then you shouldn't lose your temper.
  • Prepare your meals ready for when the baby is asleep. This way you won't waste time cooking.
