Brought up in an orphanage near Wrexham, Margaret Ellis always wanted to become a nurse.


After training for three years she passed her finals in May 1939 and began her career at Bury Infirmary. She was working on the Women's Surgical ward when war broke out and she was asked to volunteer her services as an army nurse.
