Formerly known as NEWI, Glyndwr University became the 10th university in Wales in 2008.
There has been a college in Wrexham since 1887 when the Wrexham School of Science and Arts opened its doors. In 2008 the former NEWI gained full university status and changed its name to Glyndwr University.
Glyndŵr University now awards degrees of the University of Wales.
The university has a significant number of overseas students and is particularly popular with students from Spain and France. The university is also a popular choice for mature students with 17% being aged over 40 on entry.
The university has its own Art school, The North Wales School of Art & Design, which offers a variety of courses and holds exhibitions of students' work.
The university's William Aston Hall is a 900 seat venue which hosts concerts of various musical genres including orchestras, ballet and rock music.
Also based at Glyndŵr University is Calon FM, Wrexham's community radio station.
