Caia Park in the 50s

Caia Park

Last updated: 27 April 2009

Tony Tyson remembers life on the Caia Park estate, formerly known as Queen's Park...

  • Betty's memories

I was born in Scunthorpe in 1942. When my father came home at the end of World War II there was very little work for men. His sister ran a pub in Pentre Broughton, a few miles outside Wrexham, called the Cross Foxes. She was unable to look after the pub because her husband was very ill. So my father and mother with three children moved to the pub in Pentre Broughton and we lived in the pub for about two years. We then moved from the pub in 1948 and moved into a new home in a housing estate called Queen's Park. My father got a job in the steel works. We lived in Queen's Park for about four years. My brothers and I went to school in Wrexham. Most of the people that moved into the estate were young families. I remember going down the bottom of the street every Saturday morning and buying a bag of coke for 1/10 pence and we would get some coal off the neighbour next door, as he worked in the mines. The people next door were a young family similar to ours. They had two young girls, one about my age and one a bit younger. From what I can remember as a child, we seemed to have a good time.

My mother and father said life was quite hard, they had little money and only lived from week to week, so they decided to migrate to Australia. In 1952 we moved to Sydney Australia where we settled just outside the city.

I returned to Wales in 1999 and stopped overnight in the pub at the bottom of the main street in Wrexham for a couple of days. The only disappointment I had was I did not go to Queen's Park to have a look where I once lived. I was told not to go to Queen's Park as there was a lot of crime. I should have gone and had a look! If I decide to come again I will check it out.

I lived in Churchill Drive until I was aged six, this was around 1966. My dad was the local bobby and we lived in the police house on Churchill Drive. All my memories of the place are really happy ones, my mum always had loads of friends and I can remember visiting a family called Deplasido (probably spelt that wrong) also another family called Mole who lived accros the road to us. I think the son was called Alan. I hated having to move from there. Fond memories.

I have just heard that the Red Dragon, Queens Park is re-opening on Wednesday 29 April, so get down there and give them some support! It is great news for us living here - we need our local.

Hi Cerys, how are you? We were happy in the Red Dragon, do you see anything of Mark Nailon? A K? Nudger? Gwyn'll fix it? Elly? Love to hear from you, Chris and Ken ex Red Dragon.

Rhiannon. Are you one of the Cefndre family with a sister called Olwen? I used to be friends with her and lived in 2 streets in Cefndre, the people were great.

I lived behind the Red Dragon for most of my life up till I moved to Plymouth in January 1988. My mum, Jenny, was a barmaid there for over 11 years when Ken Truswell was licencee. My memories of growing up in Queens Park are of fun, friendship and loyalty amongst your neighbours. I was so sad to see that the Dragon has closed, I was practically raised in that place! My parents first took me in there when I was 6 weeks old and I had my first ever barmaid job there too, like mother, like daughter! It would be so good if it could be opened as a family pub again, as I think it would bring the Caia comunity back together. I would certainly go in there! Anyway, to everyone who may remember me, I hope you're all well, take care for now, Sue.

As a youngster living in Glan Garth, Maesydre, I attended Alexandra school in the 60s. I remember teachers such as Mr Gage, Mrs Roberts and Mr Willams the head master. I later went to St David's school. John Roberts was a good friend, I think he lived in Maple Avenue, Acton. Other friends were Derick Jones, Ronny Jones, David Evans.

    Ceris, Queens Park.
I remember you Dai Davies, Ken and Chris Marsden (I worked behind the bar) and I remember that 'The Park' was one of the best places to live in the whole of Wrexham. Sadly, it's a shame the same can't be said today! Hey Rhiannon! How are you doing, mate?

I grew up in Queens Park in the '50s and '60s, went to Hafod-y-Wern and then Grove Park Grammar for boys. Good memories then, lived next door to the Shoemark family, good neighbours and hung around with John (the youngest). Also Colin Jones, Dave Edwards (Cefn-y-Dre), Frankie Pickering. Then we would go on somebody's bike to Bangor on Dee, or play endless football games on any available field! Remember the Quarry, Brickworks, the Forge etc. Then we knew right from wrong and our fathers stood no nonsense. As teenagers we went to the Saturday dance above Burtons the Tailors. At 16 I joined the Royal Navy and served for 26 years, fell in love with Violet Ralphs! I remember seeing Vi in Wrexham about 8 or 9 years ago (still in love with you Vi!). Now I work in Slovakia, have 2 daughters in Portsmouth and one living in Berlin. But then, QP was a good place to live with good neighbours and no problems at all. To all who remember me 'Hello'.

I lived down Queens Park for 35 years but due to personal reasons I moved out in 1994 but some of the memories I have of the place are fantastic. It's not like what people think of it, well it wasn't back then. It's a shame that's what has happened to the place. I am not sure if anyone will remember me but if you do my name is Ann Powell. If you know me please do reply.

What a sad time that the brewery decided to change us with other landlords. It closed, we moved, we did our best and are stil remembered by our friends and clients. The Red Dragon shut.

When I was landlady of the Red Dragon I went to Saint Marks Church (1989 - 92). What a lovely vicar and his wife were there plus a lovely welcome for me too, please do not judge "the park" by a few silly people.

I now live in South Wales. I was 6 weeks old when my mum and dad moved into Ceiriog Road. My mum still lives in the same house (58 years later). She used to work in the school canteen at Hafod y Wern before she went to work in Pughs Sweet shop, Prince Charles Road, where she stayed until she finally retired in 1996 after a stroke. (It was a supermarket by then!) I still consider QP as home. Yes, it has changed. I can remember going down Conway Drive then down Churchill Drive on my way to school and there would be droves of children. It seemed every house had children. Alas not now. Do I look through rose coloured glasses - probably but I had a wonderful childhood and still have wonderful memories.

We lived in Min Afon, sis Janet and I. Remember also living in Meadowlea where the Dutton girls, Marg, Veronica, Mary, lived. Also the Ralph girls, Maureen and Violet. Left Queens Park and lived on Nelson Street, Hightown, and Norman Road, Hightown, with Lesley (Williams) who was from Whitegate. Les died in 2001, we have 2 grown sons with 2 kids each. Aus is home to me now, mates with Malcolm Durkin, Jim Ward, originally from 10 Mount Street.

We both grew up in QP WREXHAM and have fond memories of growing up there. We went to Hafod y Wern school; Ray then attended Grove Park and I went to St Davids; good days, safe neighbourly and happy. Does anyone remember Kingsley Circle? It used to have two large trees in the centre and the shops were clean and tidy...

I was born in Gwenfro, then moved to y Wern in 1985. I have great memories of my childhood there me, Wesley, Aston, Rob Mathews all having a great time. Although I moved from Queen's Park in 1994, I am back in Whitegate now and the people there are just the same honest, decent folk.

To Nigel, Pentre Broughton. I used to live at the letter box on Trevenna Way and used to knock about with some of those you mentioned. My father was George Davies. The council made a driveway for his invalid car as he didn't have any legs, hard but some great times living in the lodge. Then we moved to Q/P.

I have just come across this site and the photograph at the head of the page appears to be of St Giles Crescent. This is the old part of what everyone calls Queens Park and was originally known as Spring Lodge. I grew up there after moving from James St in about 1953. This area has a colourful history, some of the families living there had the names: Humphreys not to be confused with the Montgomery Road family. Harpers, Rathbone, Edwards, Williams, Halliwel, Duckets, Degally (the smithy), Speed, Price, Hulmes, to name just a few. Times were really hard and though not to dwell on it this did not give the opportunity to some fantastically talented kids who went on to live lives well below their potential. If you are really interested in the history of the lodge try to find a copy of a book called The Making of a Criminal. It was written by a female whose name I cannot recall but is a terrific read. I had a copy of this book but lost it in moving home and would dearly love to get another copy. I will look in on this page again and see if anyone else remembers some of the families I have mentioned.

My memories of QP were in the '60s and '70s. I remember playing football any time anywhere because I was a tomboy and I loved to beat the boys, especially those that were opposed to girls playing football. I played marbles with Sylva, Anne-Marie and Janet Taylor. Played in the Gwenfro river, and survived! Walked under the viaduct (the girders which seemed a 100 foot high when we were kids). Spending long summer days down in 'biniki' with just jam butties and a bottle of pop and the entire streetful of kids, swimming and playing on the 'tarzi' ropes. Trying to beat kids from each street to build the biggest bonfire, and 'sometimes' scragging theirs and then putting baked potatoes in the bonny and having a hard job finding them later. They were usually burnt, but they smelled great. They were days which we had freedom to roam and play safely without worrying about people trying to 'snatch' us. I just remember playing outside until dusk and having a great time playing up the street, tin can alley, British bull dog and lampost tick - brilliant happy days!

We have lived in m/c, Devon and QP. Even in Devon there are some rough areas - worse than we ever experienced in Wrexham so it doesn't matter where you live you will always get good & bad.

My Dad used to have one of the shops on Kingsley Circle in the good old days before all the shutters went up. I went to the local school and we lived above the shop till I was 7. The people who first moved into Queen's Park were young families who needed housing after the War. My Dad loved the atmosphere there in the early days before supermarkets, mobile phones and to a large extent cars. Not many people had a house phone in the '50s and there certainly weren't cars parked on both sides of the road. Like most large estates, the place got worse and I wouldn't like to live there now but I still drive past occasionally and look at the shops on Churchill Drive with fondness even though they look like a prison at night.

In reply to Chris M, yes, it's a shame about the Red Dragon. I remember you being there through at that time. I rarely went in the pub except for Xmas really, but over the last ten years or so I have had some fab nights there, and brill New Year's Eves, with no trouble whatsoever. I really hope that someone buys the dragon and reopens it as it is not very nice to see it boarded up. I feel sorry for the regulars.

For J Wrexham, we ran the Red Dragon from 1989/92. We had super nights there with great artists, Damian Just, Zenga, Words and Music to name but a few. We have lovely memories of that time. Our customers knew how to enjoy themselves. All good fun, what a same it has shut. I did not know until I read your comment, very sad for the people there. Grand crowd!

Wow, what a lot of memories about Queen's Park, I grew up in Deva Way, then Glan Gors, went to Hafod Y Wern in the mid '50s, then graduated to St David's after the 11 Plus exam. Remember the marshes, Hightown train and the building of QP Youth Club. I migrated to Australia in the early '70s, when I was 22 years old. QP was a great area, wonderful and adventerous cocktail of people!

How sad that the Red Dragon has closed. Even though I wasn't a regular I have many good memories of great nights in the dragon and it's a shame we will no longer have a local on the estate, it has been there all through my childhood and I can remember my dad going there in the 60s and being asked to wear a tie one evening! I imagine there are many people who feel the same as me, especially the regulars, where will they go now? A lot of them went for the company as they lived on their own. Queen's Park will never be quite the same again without the Dragon and I hope that whoever buys it will re-open it as a pub, I feel very sad about it.

What's the old saying? you can take the girl out of the park but you can't take the park out of the girl. I was born and bred in Queen's Park (Cefndre) and I loved every minute, people say it's changed and to a certain degree I agree, but the ratio is still favouring the honest to god people who work hard and care for their homes and families. We cannot live our lives on reflection, we must reflect on what's happening now and work towards changing it, drugs, muggings, burglery, car theft and so on happen everywhere, it's a fact of life not just in QP, anyone who thinks different well, get over yourself it could be you next wherever you live, so get real and work towards trying to stop it rather than point the finger at certain areas and pretend it's not on our doorsteps, because it is.

Just letting you know that the Red Dragon is closing down. I think it is closing on 30.03.08 a lot of good memories had in the pub. Most of the people on this page are still in the park, AK is back, I see Nudge walking to town for a pint, Elly still goes to the Dragon, Peter Pumpkin is still about. Why not all come for a drink in the Dragon before it closes?

I lived in Pentre Gwyn, Bryn Hafod and Coed Aben from 1980 - 2007. I miss the people and the place, still drink in the Red Dragon now and then. There's a lot of bad people but there's a lot of good people as well. I think like most of Britain respect's gone out of the window, age of the hoodie and knife.

I lived in QP in the '50s and '60s, living in Min Afon and Cefndre. Friends I remember were Barbara Parr, Kathleen Jones, Jennifer Pugh, Christine Harris, Christine Salisbury (bless her, she died young), Richard Manuel, Alan Tudor, Richard Mahrenholz, Noel Roberts. I went to Alexandra School, Gwenfro School and Grove Park Grammar School for Girls. I remember when we were flooded out in Cefndre. I went to St Marks church up the hill. We were able to go to the shops on our own and play outside on the green. I also remember a lot of people moving to Acton when that was built but we moved to Park Avenue.

I left Queen's Park 30 years ago, but still have fond memories of my childhood and my friends in Montgomery Rd. My mother lived there from 1949 until her death in 2005, and the house was never broken into once. (You can't say that for many houses in Great Britain). It was nice to see Pete's comments about his large group of mates, I remember most of them plus Neil and Alan Edwards, David Wyn Jones, Pete Bevan and Tommy Wilson. I bumped into Bobby Leadbetter a couple of years ago living on a Scottish island! Ex QP people certainly get about.

I lived in QP from 1957 to 1984. I lived with my mum and dad, my sister Brenda and brother Robin in Gwenfro. It was the best place in the world to grow up, great neighbours and Gwenfro School was the best. Mr Glyn Steven Jones, form teacher, and Mr Davies the music teacher were probably the loveliest teachers anyone could ask for. I remember when we left in 1969 a small group of us including Ray Merrill, Kevin Higgins, myself and Catherine Solari went to Wrexham and bought a lighter for Mr Jones as a leaving present. Ray Merrill's uncle had a hardware shop in Charles Street and engraved his initials GSJ on it for us. Happy days!

I lived in the prefabs in Montgomery Road until 1958 when we moved to Portal Avenue into our brand new house. My brother and 3 sisters all attended Alexandra School. We used to have a big group of mates which included Johnny Dutton, Speedy, Ticker, Scratch, Pongo, Badger, Slosh, Wally, Goggy, all the Thomases, Mally, Davies, Woppy, Hobby, Johnny Hulmes, Peter Wyn Jones, Mike Roberts, his brother Yob, Bob Leadbetter, Mike cannon, and all the rest that I've missed - some older and some younger. Good times are not forgotten.

I lived in Y Wern from 1955 to 1970. As a child growing up there, it was lovely. The people were really nice and we used to spend long summer holidays playing all over QP with not a care in the world! Our house used to face the Sports centre so we were on the edge of QP really. I attended Gwenfro school with my brother Stephen and Miss Roberts was the headmistress. We used to attend the Methodist Church crossing over the river and walking through Gwenfro. My Mum used to run the Brownies and she was the cook at St Ann's school. I have some lovely memories of QP but if I go to Wrexham I sometimes have a little drive around and to be quite honest I feel like crying because it isn't the same any more.

I lived near the Greyhound in Rhosnesni, and went to Hafod y Wern. It was a good school; we learned how to spell and chant our tables, unlike kids today. Mr Parry was the Headmaster, and I have the perspex plaque from his office door, I found it at a bootsale. My teachers were Mrs Stubbs, Miss Williams, Mrs Ellen Williams and Miss Sybil Livingstone.

I lived in Tan-y-Coed and Pentre Gwyn from 1959 - 1967. Happy days! As a child I had plenty of playmates, good neighbours and never short of things to do, perhaps I was easily pleased. I went to Gwenfro primary school which was a brilliant school where we put on concerts/operettas including Rumpelstiltskin and the Magic Fishbone. I remember also when we won a shield for the National Cycling Proficiency for the area. Bonfire nights were great in QP with the neighbours having a bonfire in their garden, my mum making treacle toffee and sharing fireworks with each other. Girls and boys playing skipping together using an old washing line, playing marbles on what we used to call the triangle, picnics and climbing trees on and near the roly poly hill, walks to the forge, making rope swings across the river Gwenfro. They say never go back, but I did and visited QP a couple of years ago where I found both the flat and the house I used to live in had been demolished, talked to a local man who told me that they had been demolished as there had been a lot of trouble with drugs etc. Unfortunately problems like this are all over the country and not just QP.

I was brought up in QP and I had great times as a kid. I used to hang round the Red Dragon. QP is the most friendly place and everyone knows eachother. It isn't Caia Park it's Queens Park. I lived at Gwenfro, Coed Aben, Bryn Hafod and Cefndre. I now live near Acton but whenever I drive through QP I am reminded of all the good times growing up i.e going down the brickworks or the seven caves or the forge. As I grew up I was able to enjoy a nice cold pint at the Red Dragon with all the locals sitting out on the wall in the summer - it was just great.

Queens Park, now where do I begin? Maybe a village girl brought up in Cefn Mawr most of my childhood, I met and married a lad from Queens Park, Stephen Williams or Norman as some would call him! At first I was terrified of living in QP not being from there some say it was only a matter of time before I was targeted. How wrong they were! I met some wonderful neighbours and friends, still have many friends from that time now! What lovely neighbours I had too, like Mair, Debbie and my unknown twin haha (local joke). Sue Bainbridge! Glan Gors was and shall always have fond memories for me even though my row of houses are now no longer there! Thus having returned to the Abenbury Road area after so many years I was a bit apprehensive after hearing all about the riots etc, but on living here a full year now, I may as well be living on the Horseshoe Pass! How quiet it is - no sign of trouble, well not that I have experienced, and the people are so friendly! I am not a person that normally judges anyone or anything but for goodness sake give a bit of respect to the decent people that live here they have my utmost respect and I hope that the work of the Caia Park commitee keeps up. They are doing a marvellous job, especially Angie, one of my old neighbours. Good Luck to you all not that you will need it!Tracey x

I have lived on Montgomery Rd all my life and yes things have changed just as everywhere else. I can honestly say I have never had any trouble and I know some will say I am one of the lucky ones but I do think that you get good and bad on every council and private estate and people should stop criticising the park.

I remember Mohamid Akram from our schooldays in Wrexham. You would not recognise the town centre now. I still visit family in Q.P. regularly. That too has changed for the better. There are a lot of activities there for young and old and the Tip areas have been cleared and grassed over. Does anybody remember Natty Ball's shop that was in Bernard Road. My brother in law lived there after it returned back to a house!

We lived in Coed Aben from 1971-1973 and I attended Hafod-y-Wern. I remember the walk from home through the field to school. It was soo lovely, people were soo friendly and cared about you. I remember Mr Parry was the headmaster, he was a kind and gentle man. I had soo many friends but right now my mind is a blank. If you know me please send me a reply. Thanks.

My sister Janet and myself had a great childhood in Havard Way we both went to Hafod-Y-Wern and St Davids in the 60s and early 70s. Up until July we still visited my late mum there and found it hadn't changed that much and used 2 bring us lovely memories of our childhood. There used 2 be a woods were Boston Gate is now and we'd play there 4 hrs on end with our friends.A s mum is no longer with us we'll have 2 keep those memories in our hearts and minds now but we'll never forget our childhood days in Havard Way, QP

There seem some very fond memories to people that lived here years ago. But I can assure you 'it's not a nice place'. The council have knocked down lots of the properties but haven't done anything about the quality of the tenants. I really hate living here. There are a lot of very nice people but it's gangs of youths mugging, robbing, setting fire to cars etc that are completely out of control. The Police take statements and that's the end of it. I pay my taxes and wish 'Zero Tolerence' was the approach. I'm rather sick and tired of being robbed and mugged. If they do this then maybe The Park could attain its former glory.

I remember a Shireen who was a bit of a tomboy and murdered us at football...And Rhiannon, nice to hear the name again, yes it was a nice place then, sure there were some dodgy types, but not the lowlife scum that roam the streets now. It didn't do me any harm, and all the friends I had then were a great bunch, no evil in them at all.

I lived in QP for eight years of my life. Only two years ago did I move out of there... and to all you who say it is "not as bad as people say blah blah" I say rubbish! Constant crime, muggings, and people can't walk safely there in groups, never mind alone. Please, do not move to this area, or even visit it.

Its a shame about queens park. Generally its a nice area but the gangs of youths and druggies make it an unbearable place to live. The gangs of youths roam the streets all nite causing havoc. A bad time is bonfire nite where you get fire works thrown through the letter boxes.

Having worked in the area of the Park for the last 10 years, it has created a distinct impression. Eighty percent of the people are decent hard working people who would grace any community. Unfortunately there is a small minority who spoil it through crime, vandalism and stupidity. As for the majority, nice to have known you!
