Three bucket privies

Minera School in the early 1900s

Last updated: 23 October 2008

Minera local historian J. Clifford Davies looks back on village school life...
  • Minera village life

  • Before 1850 there was no public elementary education in the parish, although there had been schools of a private nature which had been kept by Dames, but these were not always satisfactory.

A Commission of Inquiry was set up in 1847 to look into the state of education in Wales. Subsequently the trustees of the Wrexham Parochial Charities were directed to establish a school at Minera.

Plans were drawn up for two schools, one for boys and one for girls, and houses for the headmaster and headmistress. The headmistress's house was built between the two schools, perhaps to keep the boys and girls apart. They were completed in 1851 at a cost of £1250.

Sanitation was poor - three bucket type privies for each school. There were no wash basins as there was no water. It was not until 1886-1888 that the Brymbo Water Company extended the water main to Minera.

In 1890 there were 240 children attending the school, the figure dropped to 160 by 1920. In 1908 the school became integrated.

From January 1940 all 11-plus children were transferred to Penygelli and Minera became an Infants and Junior only. Later that year the old Infants building was taken over by evacuees from Liverpool. When they left, the building was taken over by the Education Authority for the School Meals Service.

Class of '71 During 1944 it was opened as a canteen for mid day meals for the children. Meals were prepared in the canteen and conveyed to Frondeg School until that school closed in 1960.

My father had the contract to carry school dinners to Wern School and bought a 1936 Hillman Minx car to do so. If ever my father was unable to take the meals in his car, I would take them with a pony and cart until I became old enough to drive.

My nanna used to be the lollipop lady for Minera School. She used to have hundreds of Christmas cards to 'aunty Dot' each Christmas.

It's nice to find out about how Minera has and aint changed. The houses are still there, now they haven't changed a bit. It nice to see what the place/Minera used to look like and how it looks now.

I have been tracing some friends' family history. One of their family, Louisa Harvey, was Schoolmistress at Minera between at least 1868 and 1891. I was wondering if there are photographs of the school (and possibly her) from this period?
