Does any remember the Saturday club in the now demolished Hipprodome as I have fond memories? It is a pity it has gone. It was a nice old cinema.

I don't know you Mr Marshall, but I went to Victoria School from 1944-48 and I also was caned by Mr Mann, the headmaster, in his office up in the clock tower. The school is still going strong to this day. I was brought up in Rhostyllen, nr Wrexham.

The Vogue - remember it well. Not only did I see the Jaws 3d, I also saw a 3d sex film! Then a few beers downstairs at the Jolly Tavern - great days.

I too remember Wrexham cinemas in the Sixties, especially the Hippodrome - that's where I met my first love. Her name was Pat and she came from Gresford. Even now all these years later I still think of her and the double seats which were ideal for cuddling. Also, the Odeon on a Saturday morning and going to see Dambusters at the Majestic and getting sweets from Thortons next door but sadly all gone. We should have preserved the Hippodrome but it seems very few people were interested because just above my grandfather had his office right next to Walton and Masons turf accountants but everything changes.

I remember going to the [pictures] on a Saturday night in the Rhos. We would line up in a little dark alley for the sevenpennies downstairs in the Stiwt. I the think the other cinema further down the road was called The Miners.

The Odeon on Brook Street had the best atmosphere of any cinema I've ever been in. I remember as a 10 year old going to see the Bond film You Only Live Twice, every time I hear the theme song it reminds me of The Odeon.

During the 1950s, my father Frank Cunningham and my mother ran the Aqueduct Inn in Froncysyllte. Within either a short bus ride or a reasonable walk, were three cinemas. In Llangollen, the Dorothy and in Cefn Mawr, one affectionately known as the 'flea pit' - can't remember its name, and then the 'posh' one called the Palace. I can remember my first wide screen film there...The Robe. What days, eh? I've not that long ago got wide screen at home!

Yes there was a cinema in Caergwrle. In fact, the building is still there. I lived in Porch Lane and used to go to the 'pictures' quite often. It is just up the road from where the Boys' Brigade hall is. I saw an X rated film when I was 11 in the cinema called The Devil girl from Mars and _ have never forgotten it! Had nightmares for while.

My relatives came from Wrexham & we used to stay with my grandparents on Alexandra Rd. My mother's cousin was married to a Mr Colin Roberts who was once the manager of the Odeon. I remember quite clearly going on Saturday mornings with all my friends & being allowed to sit in the ninepenny section for only a sixpence, or if I was by myself, I could get in for free. Of course, I had to buy all my own sweeties & then went back to Nana's for lunch. She could never understand why I wasn't hungry. Sadly, my "uncle" passed away in the late 1990s & I understand the Odeon no longer exists. I doubt I would recognise too many parts of Wrexham if I came back for a visit.

I remember my mum (Edith John) answering the phone and it was someone from the Palace, Pentre Broughton, (across the road), asking could we come and get the goat. Sian the goat used to slip her chain and wander off for fresh grazing. She liked her pop corn, ice cream, whatever she could dive into before it would be snatched back in shock. Great place, but wasn't it in an asbestos shell? Best ever chippie around the corner too - Ernie's. Son Robbie carried on great business for some years. Best to you wherever you are Robbie.

Having been born at Vron Farm in the 40s I loved Coedpoeth pictures and living at Vron Farm it was en route from Coedy to Tanyfron past the Hafod & Vron along farm lane. Many is the night I used to sit in the old conker tree half way along farm lane when folks used to walk past on their way home and break small twigs that would make a loud crack in the dead of night just to put the wind up them. Seemed great fun to me. Lots of locals have pulled me up over this over the years and we have had a good laugh over it. There was no malice meant in this it was just a bit of fun. It was so dark and lonely down that lane but I was used to it. It is such a shame that the environment we live in these days does not allow this to be nowadays. Does anyone remember the fights that used to go on between Tanyfron and the shanghie on the Vron banks? It was war but thankfully it all turned out OK in the end.

Have enjoyed so much reading these comments about Wrexham cinemas. Now I know that the Hippodrome began around 1917. Did it start as a cinema or a theatre/cinema? What a wonderful man the chief usher was (I went there late 1940s). Great records in between movies too. I recall a lot of Hoagy Carmichael numbers like Buttermilk Sky and Hong Kong blues. And who could forget the Empire in Lambpit Street on Saturday mornings - Three Stooges, Flash Gordon, Leon Errol. Coming to live in Wrexham in 1947 from Chirk was a big thrill - the big city with a football league club, with such colourful players, like big Jack Bowyer (I think), and Wilson at centre-half. And modern architecture, like the bulding that's now a Macdonald's. Seeing television for the first time in Crane's and pretending to be blase about it.

I grew up in Pentre Broughton and went to the Palace when Mr Herniman and Tom Gaffney ran it. Lots of the fist "Carry On" films were shown and then from about 1965 they started having bands on, two of my favorites being The Fourwinds and Rory's Gleneagles.

Alas so many memories, I was the Chief Projectionist at the Glyn in Wrexham when I was about 19, I started there when I left school. Mr Benson was the manager and after a two year stint in the army I went back to work at the Glyn as assistant manager. By this time the Empire had closed and the manager from there was moved to the Glyn, Miss Katty Nutter. After a short time I was offered the job of Manager of the Tivoli in Buckley. At this time the cinemas were closing as TV became more popular, the Tivoli closed and I took up the job as manager at the Savoy cinema in Mold.
Just for the record, it was me who trained Mr Barry Flannigan of Hippodrome fame when he came to the Glyn as a part time projectionist, he then went on to open the Palace in Buckley and then the Hippodrome in Wrexham.
If anyone would like more information please contact me, don't let all these memories just fade away.

Hi Phil, my mum always used to go on about the palace in Cefn seeing as thats where we used to grow up. I always used to remember seeing the steps and asking my mum about them! As far as i remember she always used to go on about the times her and her friends used to ping the lads in the neck with a catapult and a bit of paper! She once told me of her friend who wore a lot of tissue in her bra only to get up in the interval and the tissue to fall out! and so on to the chippy for a penny worth of chips! Remember the old cinema warden Mr Reece?

Do you know what I remember about the old Hippodrome cinema in Wrexham is queuing for ever to see Grease 13 times and the only other time I remember is queuing to see The Elephant man! Oh, how I wanted to see this film but my friends thought this was a funny film and would insist on talking, just as the credits went up I thought I would tell them politely to shut up only to be told by the then manager Barry to get out! I still to this day cannot believe it. I was the one who was quiet and I was the one who was told to leave after he caught me telling them to be quiet! I wouldn't have minded but my mum saved all month to let me go to see this film! On returning home I had to make up the film line by telling her I had a fantastic time and it was years before I saw that film again! What memories, bliss!

Llay cinema has to be a most endearing memory for those who used to live in Llay, up to its closure in the early 60s. With first viewings of such favourites as Tarzan, The Three Stooges etc, the cinema provided cheap and cheerful entertainment; although it was a multi purpose building with the rear part used as Llay Youth Club & Dance Hall (particularly in the 60s); I can still taste the Coke we used to buy for 6d a bottle. The cinema was an interesting place, unlike the Majestic and Odeon, both smelled of new paint and plush upholstery, Llay cinema always smelled "musty", but Mr & Mrs Rimmer did well to maintain it and its demise was a sad event. In the early/mid 50s I can remember going from Primary/Junior School, in December, for the Christmas treat film show. I will always recall my first viewing of The Wizard Of Oz; in the 60s we also used to hold the Pantomime and the Youth Club Variety Show - what an era, what a cinema, what memories.

My sister Jean and I lived in Summerhill and used to go the Palace, Pentre Broughton, in the early fifties. We used to run all the way down 'the steps' afterwards, they ran all the way down to the Moss, does anyone remember them? What about the male usher at The Hippodrome? I think he was Polish and when we made a noise he used to shout "Vot vere you vistling". Happy days, best wishes to anyone who remembers me.

I grew up in Wrexham in the 50s and 60s. The most useful thing to know about the town cinemas was how to get in free through the exit door as someone left. The exits were next to the toilets so you could pretend to walk nonchalently 'back' to your seat, though the usherettes were often on the look-out and if the cinema was half-empty they would pounce on you. I recall seeing the second half of Lawrence of Arabia at the Odeon, followed by the first half. A false economy, perhaps...

My Mother and I used to walk from Tanyfron every Monday night to Pentre Broughton pictures, over the Coke Ovens in Southsea, which were so dark we used to have to feel our way along. If someone was coming the other way we used to have the fright of our lives! After the film we used to call in the fish shop and have chips in a newspaper cone dripping with vinegar.

The Odeon was the most modern cinema in Wrexham and opened in 1937 although probably not the most loved by locals - the manager was Mr Fender who used to greet his patrons every evening in the foyer dressed resplendently in evening dress. As a boy scout I recall, during a showing of The Ralph Reader Gang Show film, singing scout songs around an artificial camp fire on stage during the interval.

In my day the Empire Cinema (known as the bug house) was quite separate from the Seven Stars Pub - and which one entered through a yard used by a wholesale fruit merchant (Crowe and Sons). The bug house was the first cinema to have a Saturday matinee for kids. The charge was 3 pence and the programme consisted of a short film, usually the Three Stooges or Our Gang, followed by 'the big Picture' and finally, a twenty minute episode of the twelve weekly serial - great fun in those innocent days in the thirties.

I can remember going to The Palace at Pentre Broughton in the late 50's, early 60's to see Zorro, Roy Rogers & Hoppalong Cassidy on a Saturday afternoon. The films were like today's soaps, they left you with a cliffhanger so that you would return the following week.

My earliest recollection of the palace in Pentre Broughton was going there with my sister. It was the Devil Rides Out. I must have been very young at the time. Now all of the old cinemas have gone. It's a shame. It's a pity that the old "Hippo" could have been restored into its old glory with the gold leaf paint. It was a joy and thrill just to sit there. I remember going to the last film that was showed there. It was The Nutty Professor - happy days.

Palace Cinema, Pentre Broughton – Being brought up in Brynmally Park, some of my earliest and fondest memories were of the Palace. So here goes.. Double features – sometimes changed 3 times a week. Tom Gafney the manager, Mr Earniman (I think) was earlier. Lots of cats– I wonder why? James Bond films, Norman Wisdom seemed to be on every week! Nine Pence (9d) to get in, 1/3d in the balcony. Zoom lollies and Sea-Jets. Ernie’s for chips if you had any money left, or just a bag of ‘scratchings’ for free.
Best memories were of the Saturday afternoon matinees. Children from Brymbo, Moss, Lodge, Brynteg, Southsea– and even further afield, turning up at 2pm on a Saturday to enjoy a couple of hours of magic. Main feature was usually whatever U film had been showing that week, sometimes even in colour! Then there would be a couple of cartoons, a Laurel & Hardy, Abbot and Costello or Three Stooges, and the Serial. Does anyone remember the talking camel? The place always seemed to be packed, but I’m probably wearing my rose tinted specs. Throwing ice-cream tub lids up into the projection beam made them sparkle like fireworks. School coat tied by top button around neck made a cape to emulate Zorro or the Thunder Riders. We used to ride our horses all the way up Black Lane – beats walking. The occasional Beat-Night where several local Bands would make their claim for stardom. As the death throes of cinemas arrived, I recall it started doing Wrestling (or did I dream that?) and then it turned into a Casino. I think at the end it was bought by an engineering company. Happy Days.

Gina Walker from Wrexham. I worked in "Palace" Pentre Broughton, I was usherette, ice cream girl and even sometime the cashier. It was great fun in those days. The owners were Mr & Mrs Gaffeny (not sure if I spelled that right) then they were taken over by a firm from Manchester. I worked with young Mags from Brymbo, Mages from Moss, Ken Rhos. I often wonder what happened to them all. We all enjoyed working together. It's where I met my late husband. I must admit I felt very sad when it was closed down and then to see it pulled down.

The Odeon was the place to go on a Saturday morning when I walked from Rhostyllen with my friends to go and see what ever was on that day. It had a Saturday morning club which was run by a committee of boys and girls, also before the film started they would have a talent competition for any boy or girl who was brave enough to get up on that big stage. The Odeon was a lovely cinema and gave a lot of pleasure to the young and not so young at a time when times were hard.

Eric Morris has a valid point. What happened to the ODEON Cinema? It should have got a mention. I believe it was built about a year after the ODEON in Chester which would date it around 1937, unless someone knows more, but it certainly should be included. In fact, the Tile Clad trade mark tower is a Grade 2 listed structure which begs the question why are we not insisting on listing the Hippodrome whic pre-dates the ODEON by almost 3 decades.
