Tony's memories
In 1951 I got married at Bangor on Dee church. I went to live with my mother-in-law in Stanley Street, Wrexham, where my two eldest children were born.
At that time my husband worked for Wrexham Gas Light and Coke Company in Rivulet Road, just a five minute walk away down Cinden path, coming home covered in coal dust and grease. No showers then!
About four years later we moved to a new house on a new estate called Queen's Park where we still live.
There was no shop, school, church or any other amenities. People from all over Wrexham had moved there. A big change for all.
Two or three times a week the children and I used to get the little steam train from Hightown Halt to visit my family in Cross Lanes, getting off at Pickhill Halt by Cadbury's chocolate factory.
One day in 1958, returning home on the train, the conversation was all about the Munich air disaster concerning Manchester United players and managers.
Today in Caia Park we have shops, churches, schools, public houses, youth clubs and a good community spirit. Of late we have had Caia Park Centre built providing people with training opportunities, social classes etc and a cafe to meet and socialise. All in all I made a good move all those years ago.
