Bands remembered

Dek Dooley

Last updated: 01 June 2009

Noel (Noochy) Davies from 60s group the Dek Dooley Band is seeking posters and pictures from their hey day - and now people are using the form below to talk about other former bands from the area.
  • The Sweet's Andy Scott gets in touch!
  • Rory's Gleneagles remembered

  • Here, he explains more about the line-up. Add your thoughts and memories by using the form below...

"The 'Dek Dooley Band' were local lads also known as 'Dek Dooley and the Dominators', 'Dek Dooley and the Boppers' also the 'Dek Dooley Group'.

They were probably the only local band in the Sixties who had a chance of making the big time.

Their line up changed very little during their time together which was considerable. They had a huge following in the Wrexham, Chester and Ellesmere Port areas.

They played many of the top venues of the time including the Cavern Club in Liverpool and worked regularly with bands like The Searchers, The Hollies, Rory Storm & the Hurricanes to name but a few.

Dek Dooley The leader and lead player was a guy called Derek Williams who hailed from Tanyfron, the bass player was Noel (Noochy) Davies from Acton.

These lads are still living in the Wrexham area. Any information, photos, posters, press cut outs would be appreciated."

Found these comments interesting and may I shed a bit of light on the subject of Soul and Inspiration. I have been employed with a company on the Wrexham industrial estate and have been working alongside one member of this band, Wally Wojydta. An exceptionally nice bloke who interestingly had formed a band namely, Wally and the Desmonds. The members of this band were formed from colleagues at work and I believe Wally became the tutor/instructor to the band members. I joined a reincarnation of the band which included vocalist Jimmy Langford of Penycae, keyboard player Colin Fletcher, who has unfortunately passed away, and very much missed may I add. Also in the band playing rhythm guitar or trying to at least with Wally's coaching, myself Dale James, and last but not least Wally playing lead guitar. It was a few years before Jimmy Langford left the group and the group now called "The Desmonds" now included Phil Jones on bass guitar from Rhostyllen, who as I recall played along with Wally in a group, Colin Fletcher playing on keyboards, Dale James on rhythm guitar and Wally Wojydta on lead guitar. Following a recruitment of a vocalist, again from the same workplace, the band reformed, regrettably missing the charms of Colin Fletcher. The new incarnation being set up with vocalist Barry Roberts, Buckley, lead guitarist Wally Wojydta, Wrexham. Bass guitarist Phil Jones, Rhostyllen. Rhythm guitarist Dale James, Borras. As an amateur group we meet regularly for practice and have been involved raising money in local charity events. We have on one occasion performed together on the same venue as Jimmy Chadwick's son's group who I believe are still performing as Katch. I hope someone else can add some more interesting facts to these comments.

Just reading these memories of the good old days - I remember a really good soul band called the JayTee Organisatiion from Wrexham (one of the members was called Denny from Southsea, as I recall). They played regularly at the Civic Hall in Connah's Quay along with other great local groups.

Viewing the top photograph on this page and seeing the comments by Mr Malcolm Boothby (ex Manager at the Odeon Cinema in Brook Street) brought back memories to myself. I am the eldest son of the late Mervyn Howell, who was Chief Projectionist at the Odeon and can remember the Dek Dooley Band rehearsing their act on stage, which if my memory serves me correct, took place on Sundays when I used to visit with my father whilst he was preparing the film programmes for the coming week. Unfortunately, not being used to 'live' music at that time, I found the volume a bit too loud for my liking. In years to come, I worked at Wrexham Lager Brewery and later found out that another employee by the name of Russell Anderson, also played with the group.

DJ Murphy-now that's a name I remember! I was the keyboard player with Shropshire group,'the Karacters'. We did many engagements through your agency, and I have some photos of the group and a copy of their one and only recording for Decca- 'I feel a love that's comin' on strong'.

Anyone remember Goodnight Said Florence and their VW camper in the early 1990s? Who can forget the Droning Fartz with Scott Moreton, Ed Hodson Kev Baugh and a few of the others!

I had the pleasure of knowing Chris for a very short time, but it was plain to see that he was a true muso-character, who simply oozed talent. The first time I saw him play, he took the lead vocal in a standard blues classic and I thought Sonny Boy Williamson had been reincarnated - what a voice! What a nice guy - and what a loss to all his friends and music in general.
I've just seen the comment from Harold Martin, whose band The Raynes were long time residents at the Royal Lido in Prestatyn. I've played in various lineups with Harold in recent years and I can tell you, he can still rattle a kit.

I was lucky to know Chris even if it was only for a few years. He was the Blues Man of Prestatyn. His rough, raw voice said it all. Mr Hoochie Choochie Man. I had a chance to perform with him at Conwy food fest 2008 with Backscratch Band. I love his drumming.

I have been trying to remember stuff. Of the bands set to 'make it', I think it would have been The Elastic(Silverstone) Band, Dooleys, Patchwork, and The Jay T Set. Muso-wise Dave Kirkham's dad was a fair rag-time drummer from the thirties. Then Les Adams, a showbiz drummer, who backed Ruby Murray, Englebert, as well as acts like Paul Daniels, etc. I'll bet not many remember Dave Lewis? He'd borrow my old Futurama 2 (he didn't own a guitar) and blow everyone away with Travis pickin'. Doh! I first encountered Andrew Scott as a cub scout in the Gang show, with his brother Mike. I was also with my brother, Mike! Good old Kathy Dougall and the rest for putting up with us and instilling the germ! I also met him in that den of iniquity, the Echo office! Next it was in Guitars Incorporated, where about twenty lead guitarists all competed to finish the breaks first, in the manner of the Banjo scene in Jeeves and Wooster! Andy played bass, and took it seriously, I noted. A good sign. They also had a good singer called Barry Clutton. Murray Robinson was a Spotnicks fan, who later gave me my first set of Fender Lite-gauge strings courtesy of Derrick Leckenby, his friend in Hermans Hermits. Thanks Murray. Ian Davies was a good keyboard player, and as such one you would wish to ply with strong drink, and even stronger women, thus luring him into one's own band! Alas, one only had five bob, so he ended up, not, as one hoped, in the Wynnstay with you and quick Mabel, but the Silverstones! I also remember Jake, and Eggy, from Knockin, a really good drummer. The other really good talent was Ted Yeadon. I liked him as he was, like Andy, intense and serious about what he was doing. John Greeves went on to do Tubular Bells live with Mike Oldfield and was in Henry Cow and National Health. John's dad, was 'Ray Irving', and led a dance band with 'cachet'. I would have loved to be in that band as I didn't like the Marshall overdrive that invaded pop after Cream and then Hendrix. Even Hendrix couldn't really handle it and never seemed to be either in non-feedback, nor in tune. I drifted into the cabaret netherworld. Anyhow, I now write songs for fun and was surfing around the other week, looking for an amp, and jumped directly into this site. Very strange. And nice to see all these familiar names. And Gus and Diane, back in Overton; all the best to you! Hwyl fawr! Jim Humphreys.

    Ken Maff ex Patchwork, Rhosymedre
On Mon April 1 I went to my very good friend for forty years Chris Wright's funeral; I have never seen so many musicians in one place, the tribute concert afterwards was truly amazing & everyone who got up to play did Chris proud, I'm going to miss him so much. I would like to thank all those who got up to play for my mate Chris - you were fantastic & put your heart into it. Chris would have loved it and would be proud to call you his friends. I don't know how many of them use this site but if you see any of them who you know that played please pat them on the back for me and say well done. Thanks to you all from Ken Maff, Patchwork.

Very sad news about Chris Wright (we knew him as Kipper when we were teenagers). He did a lot in his life, he was not afraid of what others may think of him. I remember him striding through Cefn Mawr in a kaftan, not a bit bothered that people were staring at him.

Hello, anyone wishing to get in touch with me is welcome to do so. I will try as soon as poss to surf back. Most of my memories lie in the music, but will surf-up with some memories when time allows, as have only just come upon this page. Till then, hwyl fawr!

Hello Harold Martin, what are you doing with yourself now, still working? Remember the old railway days.Do you ever get over to Wrexham? Let me know.
    Fri Apr 17 10:36:11 2009

    Tracy, Wrexham
Sorry to have to add this sad news, but Chris Wright from Patchwork has passed away now. His funeral is next week.
    Thu Apr 16 15:14:14 2009

John Barnes then from Little Sutton
I remember the Dek Dooley Band playing at the Top Rank Bowl Club in City Road in Chester. They did a fantastic rendition of Man of the World by Fleetwood Mac. I used to be a regular with my then girlfriend Irene from Chester.
    Mon Feb 9 09:45:13 2009

    Harold Martin from Rhyl
I've only just discovered this page. Great to see my old band the Raynes mentioned in lights. Whatever next! I have had a few other musical experiences over time, and still haven't managed to kick the habit. By that I mean hanging around with other dubious characters usually of a certain age still retarded enough to want to carry on playing. In between I do find time to earn a crust for the neccessaries of life... To Dave Johnson from Wrexham and Ade from Peterborough, best wishes!

    David Haynes, Rhostyllen
Julie Edwards, my mum said your dad was always cheerful and would never show that he was suffering in any way. Although I was young, I remember my mum and dad talking about him. Somewhere in the back of my mind I seem to remember the Musicians Union having a fund raising event for him.
    Mon Jan 5 08:58:44 2009

    Dave Haynes, Wrexham
To Julie Edwards, my mum Joan remembers your dad as she used to live across the road from him when she was young, her name was Marles then. My dad would know him as well if he was still alive, he used to play trumpet in his own bands - the Skyliners and the Dave Phillips Orchestra. Wasn't Andy Williams the piano player? Apart from those who know me personally is there anyone out there who has any recollections of my dad or any of these two bands? The Skyliners used to play in St Mary's hall and the Dave Phillips band was the resident band in the Memorial Hall from when it first opened until moving to residency in the Royalty Theatre, Chester.

Hi all. So interesting reading all the comments on this site. I lived in Wrexham in the seventies. Can't believe nobody's mentioned the best band around at the time - Felix. Chris Wright played drums with them and Gwynn was the singer. Anyone remember them? They played a mean version of Nantucket Sleighride.
    Mon Dec 29 09:21:03 2008

    Mike Strong, Kinmel Bay
Hi Ken Maff, I bet you are busy gigging this time of year. I wish I was back playing at this time of year especially Liverpool where we used to have some great nights. I will raise a glass or two wishing you and all the old Cefners and Rhosymedreites who remember me a Happy Christmas.
    Mon Dec 29 09:16:34 2008

    Andrea from Wrexham
As I recall the Soul N' Inspiration were called the Legal Matter before they changed their name. Phil Prince was a member too. Another band were The Opposition formed of Grove Park lads Steve Whiteley, Phil James (Yam), John Tate? and ...oh dear, old age I'm afraid, as his name escapes me.
    Mon Dec 15 08:38:53 2008

    Richard Harding
In 1960 I played in The Jesters as the bass player. I also played with Day by Day showband and continue to play with Brian Jones, Andre Larry and Mike. As a change, I also play in a Glenn Miller tribute band, Moonlight Serenade. Good to know so many musicians from the '60s are still about.

Hi Malcolm Boothby, I think I have a copy of the flyer you refer to, however thank you very much for the kind offer. You are right, the top picture was taken in the Odeon Cinema Wrexham in the '60s. The Dek Dooley band used to practise there once a week. Would you be "THE" Malcolm Boothby, one time manager of the Odeon?
    Wed Dec 3 08:01:33 2008

    Malcolm Boothby: Wrexham
Message for Noel (Noochy) Davies, I have a postcard size flyer the band used in the '60s, giving the Dominator's address as 10, Crosville Buildings. If you haven't got one of these cards you're welcome to this one. That photo at the head of this page looks like the Odeon.

Glad I stumbled on this site. Great to see the old name's etc. A few bands missin' though.... anyone remember Terminal? I have two 7" singles of theirs. Let's not forget IQ zero, Tiger Rose (whom I drummed for), Winter (again I drummed) later known as Shufty. Gengis (great voice Paul & great to see that one off gig last year). Plenty of others but mind gone blank, sorry guys. Wrexham used to be a great music town, bands everywhere, venues everywhere. Keep Music Alive...& Live

Reading about Patchwork, I was at the Seven Stars Sunday 24th of August 2008 to see the reunion of Baby Blue. It was good to see them again next day. I remembered the band Chris Wright played in. The band was Patchwork then I looked through my LPs and found a Patchwork LP called Unlucky for Some. Bought it in a car boot sale...

Hi John, hope you are OK nice to see Penny Black still going. Seems forever since we started it. Still a bit jealous after you swapped me for a younger and prettier partner. Sorry I missed your dad's funeral, I was away. He was a big inspiration to me, was always there with good advice and a few clouts, great man. Keep in touch.

    Taff (Patchwork), Jersey
John Haynes, the guy that asked me to join my first real band in 1974! You'll remember "Bandana"? I still have the first photograph of that band taken at Gresford Colliery, it's in a frame on a wall. Still doing the North East? I remember those clubs, and also the "Haven Club" Whitehaven, summer '77? It's been a while since we were all up north. Applejacks, Patchwork, Light Fantastic etc, etc. Great days John, great memories, you taught me a lot in the early days, playing guitar, vocals etc, thanks. In and around 1980 you, me, and my brother Paul got together as a three piece, some great gigs they were. It would be nice if you, me, Ake, Ken, Nigel, Paul and Chris could get together one day, talk about the old days, maybe play some stuff together. I'm over in the "Cefn" 22nd-25th August if you're around, hope to see you and the rest of the lads then. By the way I still have you're plug-board from "Clouds" club in Preston, the first pro gig we did. It still works!

Hi John, Abergele. Good to hear another 'oldie'. I sang withRory's Gleneagles 1960s. Seen you a few times in the past around here, Cunliffe etc. Good to hear you are still putting it together. I wished I hadn't finished. Myfriend Noel (Noochy) still has one of the best groups around - Tobacco Road. Cheers.

Hi Murray. Haven't been on site for ages, have been trying to find your whereabouts. It was fantastic to see you would like to get in touch, I have fond memories of our time together in the Silverstones from being support band to Hendrix to the time in Coventry when we were trying to find the light switch for the main hall which was pitch black. All we could hear was you commentating and imagining you were playing for your beloved Everton and you scoring the winning goal in the cup final, then it went quiet. We thought you were hiding but when we eventually found the light switches and the lights came on you had run into the underneath of a concrete stairs and you were sparko. You spent the night in hospital and I think Roy played lead. That night we supported Herbie Goynes and the Nightimers, most of his band were Georgie Fame's Blueflames with Speedy Aqua on congas. We became good friends in those days having stopovers in each others' houses. There is so much to talk about, please get in touch, Ian.

    John Haynes, Abergele
Hi to everybody, out there who remembers me, Ray Jones, Ken Maff, (my best man first time around!), Noochy, Jimmy etc hope you're all well. Had a great time with all the bands I played with in the 60s/70s (nostalgia is not what it used to be). I am still full time on the circuit with my wife in a duo called Penny Black. 25 years in October! Should be getting a medal. We are off up to the North East tomorrow for 6 days although even the clubs up there are struggling. Mostly play Yorkshire, NE, and South Wales nowadays. Still play guitar and sax but haven't played keys for about a year. Hope someone gets in touch, lost contact with most people since I moved over here, until then all the best to everyone, regards John.

It's really interesting reading all your comments. I played drums with the Dave Stuart Sound during the 70s and 80s. I found an old diary the other week it was amazing how much work we were doing in those days. My father Cliff formed the band who is now 86 years old and still plays keyboards. I am now playing in a band called Phoenix with an old school mate Andy Painter on lead guitar, Steve Whitehead bass guitar, Alastair Prydderch on keyboards, Mark Sant vocals. We cover music from the 60s to present day. We have played Wrexham Park the last few summers and our last charity event we raised £1600 for Hope House Hospice at the RAFA club.

    Keith Davies, Vancouver Island, Canada.
To Dave Johnson, I spoke to Paul by telephone today and passed along your message. He remembers you and also Noochie. Unfortunately, he has prior arrangements, so can't make the pub for that 'reunion' on Friday 6th June.

Hi Keith Davies, Vancouver Island, Canada. Picked up your message about Paul, ex policeman. Got to be good friends with him when he was in Garden Village, Wrexham. I met up with him when I was "Rory" of the Gleneagles playing regular in Oswestry, and then Paul had a few cups of tea at our house in Gateway, Acton. Wish he would get a computer could get in touch then. I hope you are enjoying life in Canada. If you could get in touch with Paul, tell him Noel (Noochy) will be in the Fat Cat, Wrexham, Friday 6th June, we would love to see him.

Keith Davies, Vancouver Island, Canada (ex Flints)
To Annie (nee Adams) Isle of Man. I see your mention of your memories of Paul Dodd, particularly of his police service days and the pantomime he performed in at Wrexham. I served in the North Wales Police at Wrexham with Paul, and from about 1974 to 1991, we appeared many times around Wrexham and the North West, (including Liverpool and Oswestry) as a duo, always to raise money for charity, as being 'cops', we weren't allowed to earn extra money for ourselves. I think the pantomime you refer to was probably the 'Kathy Dougal' pantomime at The William Aston Hall in either 1979 or 1980. Peter Swingler was the producer. I also remember the late Sid Jones as the sound engineer. I know that Paul still has a number of photographs taken during that week. I am still in touch with him on a regular basis, but by telephone, as he still refuses to get involved with computers. He promises ownership of one is imminent though. He and his wife Anona have visited us here on Vancouver Island a couple of times. Although we've both acquired a number of other guitars along the way, we both still own the same ones we used in the '70s. Whenever we speak on the telephone, I end up reading these messages over to him. I know he'll be glad to hear yours.

So many people that my Dad (Les Adams) knew! He was a comedian & drummer from the 50s until he died 3 years ago. His honeymoon was spent on stage with my Mam (a dancer) at the Royalty in Chester in '58. I remember Mick Tucker's dad asking him to give a very young Mick a couple of tips but my Dad just heard him play and said he didn't have to...he was a natural and brilliant drummer already. I remember Paul Dodd too (not only in the Police & the Black Abbots) but in a Pantomime in Wrexham one year. My dad was the knock about & Paul one of the comedy duo. & I remember George Smallwood & the Den Barker Trio. My dad was also the session drummer for years in the '70s at the Caergwrle Labour Club that 'Merion' booked all the best artists from Opportunity Knocks etc...we still have a bag of signed photos from loads of them! He went on to become the drummer of the Chisholms - with Big Ray & Kenny - won loads of awards for best comedy band, but more successful in middle England area than home ground...such is life! Hope all you musos keep on playing to the end...it's the only way I know of to stop a drummer...but the beat goes on with a grandson with his own studio full of instruments!

A message to Frazer Williams (a Cefner now residing in New Zealand). Hi Frazer, I'm still alive and kicking, still writing songs. Hope you are doing well, they were great days; Ken Maff, Husey, John Haynes, Chris Wrigh. Anyway, search for me on myspace and hear what I'm doing now.

It's great to see all these names who still remember the great times we had as musicans from the late fifties to present day, playing in the band competitions in the 'Memo' playing gigs in the Church house, Maesydre community centre, Overton villiage hall and so many more. I have also had the privilege of playing with many great musicians, too many to mention and it's great to see a lot of the 'old boys' still rockin and long may they go on. If any of you fancy coming down to the Seven Stars on the Bank holiday Saturday (22nd March) my band, Movin' On, are playing and it would be great to meet up with anyone who remembers these days, my warmest regards to all and keep those memories rolling in, Ray.

When Andy Scott was in Guitars Incorporated Barry Clutton was on guitar and vocals, Dave Kirkham may have played drums for a short time but I believe Dave Owens (Shep) was on drums also. As far as the 3-Ds I believe the Jim in question was Jim Humphries on lead guitar.

    Noel (Noochy) Davies
Hi Andy, Noochy Davies here, remember when you worked in the Midland Bank in Caergwrle, you used to stand in for me on bass in The Dek Dooley Band when I went on holiday or got sick, good old days. You said then you would make it to the big time before me...and you did, as I never made it to the top, however I watched your career and was proud to have known you. I would love to chat with you whenever you next come to Wrexham, you could tell all about your time at the top and what it was and still is like, good on you. Noochy.

Hi Mike, nice to hear off you. Do you remember when I stood in for Stan on guitar with your band? I think they were called Blueberry Hill. We did the Holly Bush, Cefn, & a village hall somewhere. I had two good nights & I got paid too - spoilt or what?

I have regular contact with Andy Scott. He's not very good with web stuff so has asked me to post this and say if there is anybody from the Silverstones or Gus from the Elastic who would like to contact him please get in touch with me. He visits Wrexham frequently and would love to hear from you. Cheers, Stew.

Hi Martin I bought that white vox bass from John Reed in Oswestry for £25 in 1963 and I swopped it for a red Hoffner which I still have along with 5 others I have bought along the way. It seems a long time since we were neighbours in Plas Madoc.

Hi all. I run the Sweet website at www.thesweet.com and I'm trying to expand the content with some more info and photos of Andy Scott's associations with earlier bands. If anyone has any info, contacts or photos, please email me at: stewart@thesweet.com. (I think these were the bands - though some I'm not too sure if he was in): Guitars Incorporated, Missing Links, The Jades (?), The Acoustics (?), Silverstone Set, The Elastic Band, Mayfields Mule. Cheers, Stew.

Hi, Ken Maff - long time no see. It is great to hear from one of the best guitarists in north Wales. I am glad to see you are still playing. I am not doing anything at the moment but I might be open to persuasion if the right band came along. It is nice to see that Rhosymedre is still rocking.

Message for Jimmy Chadwick, Llay. I remember The Saints. Terry Thomas who lived near me in Penycae was in the band. I have a photo of them somewhere. My mother used to alter their jackets. I remember her having to turn the normal collars into little stand up ones like the Beatles. Me and my friends used to try them on when no-one was around because we thought they were famous

Hi Chris Tobin, Llangollen. Just seen your message about your reformed group, I was talking to Dave Robinson last Friday (as we always do) and he was telling me about you. When I was singing with Rory's Gleneagles in the early '60s, we played every other Friday night in Llangollen Youth Club which I think was next to the Royal Hotel. I asked Dave to ask you if you or anyone still remembers us playing there, it would be good to hear from anyone. I hope your gig went well on the 15th.

Nice to see Andre and the Electrons mentioned, as I was the vocalist with this great band in the early sixties, being lucky enough to appear with 'The Liverpool Lads' in 1963. Line up then was Andre Wheeldon (lead guitar), Sid Cummins (bass), Russ Maddocks (rhythm), Mal Davis (drums). Great times and not a poster/photo kept. Silly boy!

Hi Julie, I have just read about your father Terry Dodd. I worked with Terry as an apprentice cabinet maker at Wayne Sanders, Bridge St, Wrexham, 1957-58. As well as teaching me my trade he also talked me into drumming which I have been doing now for nearly 50 years. I also worked with Andy Williams and also most local bands, so I have a lot to thank Terry for. Regards, Frank Lloyd.

Hi to all. I've been living in Jersey for the past 20 years. My brother Paul has just give me this web address and it's great to read that a lot of the guys are still around. I'm still playing solo full-time and have just done a support for Midge Ure at Fort Regent Jersey. Fraser is right, we should put all the old bands back together for a one-off concert, give all the proceeds to a local charity. After all we can all remember when the songs in the top ten all sounded different!

Hi Trevor Jones, Leominster. As I have been looking for memorabilia from our Shrewsbury Music Hall days the Shropshire Star very kindly put a write-up in yesterday's edition. Surprise, surprise a gentleman phoned me last night to say he remembers all our groups as in the '60s, he cut every advert out of all the groups that appeared and he has a collection of 13,000. He found one of us appearing with Brian Poole and Tremeloes. I am sure he mentioned the Phantones. Very interesting gent. He is sending a copy to me.

Hello Bryan Jones, ain't it a small world, I was dating Andre's sister for a short while in the '60s while I was lead singer with The Phantones. We played the Music Hall so many times themanagement were on first name terms. Great times had by all. Also hi to Dave Johnson, yes mate, we did meet on the same bill back in the 'good ole days' and yes it was the Victoria Rooms in Oswestry that you remember, you will also remember the Plaza Ballroom, sadly now gone and so will the Vic if it hasn't already been knocked down for housing. Hi Trevor Jones, Just seen your message. We will have probably met one another when I was Rory's Gleneagles. We played quite often in Oswestry. Was it called Victoria rooms, with Billy J Kramer etc? I also became quite pally with a guy called Paul. He was a member of a group from Oswestry. I think he joined the Black Abbotts and then afterthat joined our local police force. I agree it is good to talk about the '60s. Don't know if you have met up with Tobacco Road from Wrexham. They are still packingthem in wherever they go with their great sound. Maybe meet up with you one day.

I wonder if anyone has any info or photographs on The Andy Williams quartet? My father Terry Dodd was the drummer and I think Terry Lacey played piano. His wife taught me to play! I would love to hear from anyone who has any information. Sadly, my father contracted multiple sclerosis and had to give up playing and I know he was so upset at the thought of never playing again.

In the mid '80s my wife and I can remember seeing an entertainer/singer called Ricky Vaughan who, we are led to believe, hailed from the Wrexham area. In fact, we saw him on numerous occasions when he played clubs local to our area. Is Ricky still about and if so is he still using that marvellous voice of his? Any replies gratefully recieved.

Hi D J Murphy, good to see your article. I was the singer with Rory's Gleneagles and we played many times at the Shrewsbury Music Hall, with Brian Poole, Nashville Teens, Billy J Kramer etc. I have been trying to contact someone in Shrewsbury to see if they have any old posters, I workedin Shrewsbury at the time and there was a young lady who started a fan club for us. Sadly two of the group have passed away, John and Alan, but met up with Derek last night our guitarist and spoke of the 60s. I have a few photos of the Gleneagles and a programme when we appeared with The Mojos at the Chester Royalty. Be grateful if you can find anyone in Shrewsbury who remembers us. Good to be in touch with you.

Hello from D J Murphy (Dee Jay Murphy) Shropshire's first mobile D.J. The Wrexham, Chester and Deeside groups will remember me, (dressed in a golden jacket made by Mrs Jones from Llanforda, Oswestry, the mother of the Phantones) and a blonde wig, and teddy bears that I gave out as presents, I still have mine and on my wife Irene's 50th Birthday, I got in touch with my old friend who was from the Silverstone's, Silverstone Set, The Elastic Band and Zzebra and Love Affair, do you remember their hit record? Yes it was Everlasting Love. It was a great night for my teddy bear, which has a little story behind him. I was doing a show with the Clubmen from Shrewsbury at Llanfair Caereinion and on the Friday night my teddy went missing. I was disappointed that he was taken, however on the Saturday night a team of soldiers marched up the middle of the room with my teddy bear, Foxy. They had dressed it up as a soldier, put on a beret, gave him stripes and honoured it with a BB (Brave Bear Badge) and to my surprise the one I gave to Gus in 1964/5 he brought him to meet my Teddy Bear, however they both had a great Rock N Roll Night. I telephoned Ted (Gus and his lovely wife Dianna to come and entertain us for the evening. What a night, we had over 150 people at the party, and they did not stop all night. Hi Frazer, great to hear from you. I've passed on my email address to the web team, as requested. Yes, you're right about me coming from Anglesey (Holyhead, to be more precise) and about replacing Graham on bass. I'd forgotten his surname. The short-scale, creme-coloured bass you remember was a Shaftesbury Telecaster copy I bought secondhand from a wonderful Holyhead bassist, Huw Hughes, of Contraband/Red Truck. He later joined the Modernaires (anyone in Wrexham remember them?), a mod/new wave band that worked around the Manchester and Liverpool area, I believe. Huw died tragically young in a house fire. He should have been a star. I'm still a big Jaco and Weather Report fan. I'd forgotten all about 'Flute', the Geordie roadie, until you mentioned him. I'm not sure it was the Patchwork lads who nicknamed him, though - I think it came with the package... Are you still in contact with Ken or Taff, Chris or Graham? All best!

Hi All, I have seen that you are looking for Gus Yeadon, of the Silverston Set, Elastic Band, The Love Affair, ZZebra ...to name a few of the bands he has been with. He and I are now back in Overton. We are building our own home studio at present. We are not performing at present, though that could change! If you want to contact us for more info please leave a message on this page. We look forward to hearing from you and catching up!

Hi Chris, What a blast from the past. I do remember you well, you came from Anglesey and replaced Graham Roberts on Bass(Ache). You played that short scale vintage fender precicion a creamy colour with a maple neck and if, I remember rightly, you were a big fan of Jaco Pastorious(Weather report)! Hey, remember that Geordie roadie the band brought back from Sunderland? "Flute". You guys nicknamed him! What a charactor he was, eh! Listen Chris, forward the web team your e. mail for me and I'll catch up with you some more. Take care. Fraze N.Z.

Chris Bell from Auckland, New Zealand
Frazer Williams in Wellington: Greetings from Auckland. I doubt you will remember me, but for a short time I played bass guitar in Patchwork with Taff and Ken and Chris Gray-Wright. This was well after their 'Opportunity Knocks' appearance (the song they played, I think you'll find Lester, was Queen's 'Seaside Rendezvous'). As you can see, I'm also now living in NZ (I've been here for 10 years now and don't play bass any more, although in the mid-1980s did a short stint playing live bass with another 'Welsh' band: Freur from Cardiff, of 'Doot Doot' fame, who went on to become Underworld). Anyway, it's kind of strange that we both ended up in the same country, on the other side of the world... If you or any other BBC Wales readers still have contact with any of the Patchwork musicians, please pass on my very best regards. While I was in the band, Taff's family very kindly put me up at their house in Cefn Mawr, between our gigs in Sunderland lodging at South Lodge in Roker, and all over the North-East. I remember gorging myself on Taff's Mum's great egg and chips and listening to Rod Stewart and the Isley Brothers' 'Summer Breeze' on the radio in their garden in the summer of 1977 or thereabouts. Another great memory: with Ken and Chris kipping in the back of the rented Sherpa van full of gear, driving back from some Geordie gig, one night Taff and I watched a 'UFO' track us down the motorway and then zip off in a flash of light. How's that for Close Encounters of the Patchwork kind...

    Terry Davies from Canada
I used to play bass in a band called "Roll Movement", formerly "The Antix", based in Rossett in the late 60s, although I was from Llay and Jim Dutton our drummer was from Chester. Lead guitar was Roger Reddington and guitar/vocals was Steve Bradshaw. Our claim to fame was playing gigs with Fleetwood Mac, Deep Purple, Love Affair, to name a few. In answer to a question above Andy Scott did play for the Silverstone Set prior to joining Sweet, I was in Grove Park school with Andy and as luck would have it I met up with him in Thunder Bay, Canada, June 2006, where A.S. Sweet were playing at an outdoor Rock Festival. If anyone remembers me and/or the band get in touch.

I presume in Noel Davies' "put down" of Ray Jones re: his involvement with Dek Dooley, that he (Noochie) was only referring to Dek's "Daybreak" as various Dooley bands throughout the years have had a few drummers the most notable, and talented, of whom were Ross Mills and Robbie Biggs.

I wonder if anyone has any information on a "Jazz Band" that was around either CAERGWRLE or GWERSYLLT area. My father ERIC DODD was from GWERSYLLT and used to belong to this band. He used to do arcobatics as the band marched. I'd love to contact anyone who knew of or, has any idea of the name of this band.

Yeh, you're dead right Jimmy. Wrexham is and always will be a Mecca for talented musos and bands. It's a shame the band that we tried to get going never took off; Me you Ken Mathews and Dickie Ingham on drums. We practised in the Queens on Saturday afternoons 1978-79ish. I was 16 and you guys were in your 60's, well 30's anyway ah! Dickie Ingham...anyone know what he's up to? Talking of Ruabon lads who remembers HYBRYD? They were a rocking band. Mike Wllliams, Alan Wright...who else? I forget! One more question for you old timers. Who remembers a band called The Saints? (origin Ruabon I think). A guy named Steve Wright played guitar with them, 1960s...any more info? Fraze, NZ.

Hi, Annette and to Jinmmy. Well, it is so good to hear from you both. Annette, yes all those things were great and I am still doing the model aircraft thing and still playing in a band called Movin'On. My mum now 85 is still going strong and Jan, my sister, her son is in Katch with Jimmy's son small world or what? Wrexham Scooters and Fairways above and Sam's many happy memories. I'll bet there will quite a few folks who will remember those places. Our band will be playing in the Seven Stars soon - perhaps we should have a gathering of old friends. I will let you know when it will be and we can share a few beers. Take care and keep in touch on this site. Regards to all, Ray.

My late father, Ged, used to be in a band called the Xceptions who were based in Chester. He spoke proudly of his days in this group. I was wondering if anybody remembered them. My mother has a few photos but I will have to ask her who was the line-up as I don't know off hand.

I would like to answer on Noel Davies's comments on my involment with Daybreak. I practiced with Dek in the little cinema in High Street Wrexham several times so Nooch you are mistaken on that one, however i never did a gig with them and if you remember when i played with yourself in the Swan, Pen y Bryn some time ago and Dek came to see us we mentioned that very time, but hey no big deal as far as i am concerned. I just want to keep playing as long as i can, and i applaude any 'mature' muscians out there who are doing the same. Good luck with your own band Tobacco Road.

Hi Barry great to hear you are around, yes we did have some great times in the sixties (remember HP baked beans?) I have not heard anything about Gordon Griffiths of late must try and get in touch with him (Gordon was in Tuxedos and many more bands). I am still playing with a band called Movin' On and we have Phil Hughes as front man who runs the The Plough in Rhosymedre, where you are likley to meet up with some old faces like Ian Davies, Taff, Kenny Mathews who's Mum very sadly recently passed away. I can remember so many names that were about in past and they bring back many happy memories and i do have a lot of old photos (black and white of course). Hope to see you in the near future Barry. Warmest regards, Ray J.

Just to correct a comment from a Ray Jones Llay (March 2006). He was never involved with Dek Dooleys Daybreak in any way, at the start, the middle or the end, Robbie Jones was the drummer right from the start I should know, it was me who formed the band to start with.

Just found the website. Hello Ray Jones my friend nice to see you mention the Webb great times at Malpas Village Hall. I remember singing with the Gleneagles at the Odeon cinema on Saturday mornings and then I joined the Tuxedos.

Hi y'all. I was the lead guitarist in a band called ROAD AGENTS. Anyone remember? Lead singer was Martin Molloy (I believe he runs a tie company in Wrexham now?) I also was mates with Chris Wright and Kenny Matthews and "Taff" the singer of PATCHWORK, in Cefn Mawr, fame. They were on Opportunity Knocks and sang Seaside Shuffle by Queen (a bad mistake that, lol!) Would be nice to hear from anyone who remembers me? I was also in school with Andy Scott, used to chat on the Evans' bus going to school! I lived in Dean Close, Rhosnesni, and my girlfriend was Lynn from Borras Park. Thanks, great site this!

Hi Chris, It was great to meet up with you again last Saturday in Buckley, as we discussed on that night I have lots of information and pictures of most the 60's bands in Wrexham especially The Dek Dooley Group or Dek Dooleys Daybreak. As you know I was with them for many many years, all through the 60s and 70s. Noochy. P.S. Thank you for your kind comments ref 'Tobacco Road' the best Rock & Roll Band in Wrexham today.

In answer to Paul of Wakefield. I do remember The Raynes, if I am right Harold Martin played drums. I worked with Harold for quite a while in the early days with British Railways and then he went to BICC Wrexham. Still about town here I think.

Lynne Marsden (nee Rogers) from Wrexham
My Dad, Mac Rogers, had a band from the 70's to early 80's called WHISKY MAC. Dad was the drummer and though many various artists played with him, there were a few constants.......Al Nicholls, vocals and sax (now has his own fabulous band called Blue Harlem. Sadly Dave Jones, Bass guitarist died along with our dear friend John Evans (also Yardarm). Mum, Dad and I maintain contact with John's wife Anne and of course Al who now lives in London. Whisky Mac played many venues and we would often meet up with other musicians like Dek Dooley and Noel Davies (Noochy) for a drink or two! My fondest memories are those spent with my Dad and his musician friends....Great days! Dad now runs the Mitre pub in Wrexham where at 70 years old, he still entertains the regulars with the odd Karaoke turn.

Does anyone remember 'The Raynes'? They were a band who played around Wrexham (and farther afield) in the 60s. The lead singer lived down the road from me in Rhostyllen. He was related to the people who made the meat pies on Bersham Rd. I can't remember their name but it wasn't Ecclestons - whose pork pies were (are?) delicious!

Just found this excellent site about the 60s. I was the singer with Rory's Gleneagles and enjoyed many great nights locally. Met up with Ray Jones a couple of weeks back in the Seven Stars who are keeping the live bands scene in Wrexham alive. Also saw Tobacco Road there recently Noel (Noochy) has got a good sound coming from them. We played many times at Shrewsbury Music Hall, what a great venue that was, playing with the likes of Nashville Teens, Brian Poole, Billy J Kramer etc. Be good to meet up with any of the 'old' scene players to talk about old times.

To Frazer Williams / Wellington, New Zealand, you mentioned Phil Hughes, Ken Matthews from the Cefn. I was the drummer with these guys in a band called New Invention in the early seventies we also had John Haynes whose father was a brass player in Wrexham. John is now in a duo called Penny Black. You also mentioned Jimmy Chadwick and a band called Sprint. I was in fact the drummer with them. Jim lives still lives in Llay down 'Jackie Barrats Lane' and his son Jay is the lead singer in a band called Katch and my sister's lad is a lead gutarist with them - a small world. I have played not only with the muscians mentioned here but people like keyboard player Ian Davies (Cefn) and Derek Hannaby, (Wrexham) John Thorpe (Bradley) and so many more. We have been so lucky in the Wrexham area with excellent talent and i am happy to say it is still going on with some great young bands. i am still playing and i think only old age will stop me. my band FAIRGROUND is still keeping it Live take a listen on our web site fairground.50webs.com i would dearly love to get as many of the 'old' musicians together for a weekend of live music and i would be happy to hear from anyone who remembers the sixties and onwards , sorry folks but discos and backing tracks dont do anything for me, KEEP IT LIVE regards to all Ray Jones, LLay

My father, David, was in a band called Rory & The Gleneagles during the 1960s. They supported the Mojos in Chester in 1963. My family and I are trying to find any records recorded by them during this time, particularly one called "I". If anybody could help it would be much appreciated.

    Don Rivers from Lincoln
In the 60s I was landlord of the Grapes Inn, Johnstown. I was already a professional entertainer working cabaret all over the country and also locally. My Parents Jack and Harriet Miller, lived in Smithy Rd, Coedpoeth, for many years. I knew the Dek Dooley Band well and worked with them on many occasions at the Royalty Theatre Chester, Llay Legion etc. I lived later at Abermorddu for several years before moving to Cornwall, where I ran the Newquay Theatre, presenting my own "Night at the Music Hall". I would love to hear from any friends in your area who may remember me or my parents, and especially Vernon who was a miner and lived with wife Kath almost opposite the Grapes. I have one small experience I must relate to you. I had a lot of publicity problems with my real name which is Donald Thurlow, I got Thirlough, Furlong etc, so I decided to change to Don Rivers. My first date after changing was Llay Legion and I thought nothing can go wrong with this name. The compere walked out, gave me a nice build up and then announced "Ladies and Gentlemen put your hands together for 'TOM Rivers'!" I couldn't believe it. Ho Hum. That's showbiz!

Re Chris Dawson's request for info on The Silverstones. The lead singer was August 'Gus' Yeadon whose family ran a post office in the Oswestry area and lived in Overton. Gus did become the lead singer of the Love Affair and Andy did join Sweet. The Silverstones were an excellent group specialising in R&B sounds. I got to know Gus quite well and lent them my R&B records to learn for their act. I remember accompanying them to play in Shrewsbury one night. My mate & I did not have the admission price so we became 'roadies' for the night. This was the nearest I came to a life in show business. I have heard that Gus now lives in the Southampton area and is still involved in a music act. As for Dek Dooley & band. I saw them many times and they were indeed a class act.

I used to see them from time to time but now I haven't seen any of them for ages so any contact would be good if poss.

Not band information, although I did see the band play when I was a youngster growing up in Wrexham. I remember my late father saying that he was related to Derek and I have to say there is a strong family resemblance. I wondered if there was any way of contacting Derek by email.

Hi to all...I'm a local lad from Cefn Mawr and have played in a few bands around Wrexham. I'm a bit too young to remember the sixties bands but my heroes of the 70s that influenced me playing were the likes of locals Dek Dooleys, Daybreak and of course PATCHWORK who were from Cefn Mawr. It's been an honour to be in a band with the likes of Ken Mathews or jamming with Chris Wright, all ex-Patchwork, but I remember the Dek Dooley band well when they use to play the Monsanto club and Plas Madoc l.c. They were a really tight band especially with another talented Cefner in the band, bass player Phil Hughes. It would be great if someone organised a reunion for the old but great bands of Wrexham. Whatever happened to a guy called Jimmy Chadwick, a brilliant keyboard player from Llay, used to be in a band called Sprint?

Two groups I remember from the 60`s based in Shotton were "The Gas Plant" and "The Kualas" both were very good. The Gas Plant used to rehearse in Ash Grove Youth Club in Shotton. Some of the members were Aiden Sweet,Paul German & a lad called Budgie on sax.We used to sit on sacks watching them rehearse convinced they`d make the big time. We also used to go to the Civic in the Quay for the Monday night teenage dances where a lot of local groups played.....Happy Days!

Hello world! I've finally got myself connected to the net! I'm the guy who is writing the history of the groups in the Chester, Wrexham and Deeside area and I would be very grateful to anyone who would contact me with information on any groups they may remember. I am hoping to get the finished product into print in the not to distant future and I don't want to miss anyone out. (No doubt I will!) Look forward to hearing from you.

I seem to recall they were called Del Dooley and the Dynamic Dominators at one time - also didn't they go under the name 'The Outer Limits' for a period, probably around the time of the TV series - or is my memory failing me?

    Kim Davies, Coedpoeth
To Sharon. Isn't this exciting? You will have to excuse me but I'm new to the net. I think that I have listed myself on the genes reunited site but if I've done it wrong you'll have to excuse me. I've listed under kim smallwood 1964 which should be easier to find. My mum asked if you are Elaine's daughter. I was quite shocked to see grandad's name on the net even though he was quite famous in this area. I am very proud of my Smallwood links, and have named my youngest son George after grandad. My cousin Karl's son is called Robert so there is a family tradition there too. How long is it since you left Coedpoeth because although we have only lived here 6 years several cousins have been here over 20 years. You will prbably have known them and not even realised the connection. I would love to meet up with you and I have loads of family photos which date back to grandad's parents also many of the George Smallwood band, although I would have to ask my husband to put them on the net as I'm not that computer literate yet. It has been lovely finding you and I hope to hear from you or anyone else who knew George Smallwood very soon. We will definitely get a family reunion arranged.

    Sharon on family connections
Hello Diane, I would love to meet you. I am from Bobby's side, him being my grandfather. I have a very extensive family tree on the Smallwoods which I would love to show you. Are you by any chance a member of Genes Reunited? If so I can forward you my email address that way, and yes I do live pretty local.
    Fri Feb 10 14:50:11 2006

    Diane Smallwood, Wrexham
Hi Sharon - re George Smallwood. I am George's daughter and can supply any information you need. He first learned to play sax and clarinet when he was in a military band then later playing with local bands in the area. He formed his own band in the mid-thirties and during the war had a band of about 16. This was the 'big band' sound. He was extremely well-known as a bandleader and solo saxophonist. He also broadcast several times on the radio (before television), and won awards in the Melody Maker and Musical Express. Apart from his younger brother Fred who played trumpet, he was the only musical member of the family. I remember your great-grand-parents extremely well and visited them regularly - there are quite a few cousins living locally. I would be most interested to know how you are related - through Bobby or Rona? - and what area do you live in. I would be thrilled to hear from you and please do not hesitate if you need any further information.

FAO Graham Mills - Southsea Sorry if you have posted for some time without reply - have been having severe connection problems of late. However, have spoken to Chris who would be very grateful for any info you could provide. As he is not on the net, you can contact me and I will pass on details. Chris is still up to his eyes continuing his compilation but would be interested in making contact as soon as he makes some headway.

For Mick John, Buckley. I was a drummer in the 60's for the band called "The Facts", the other members were: Terry Lloyd, John Burchinshaw, Phil Hartwell and Sherrine Matthias. I have a photograph as well (unfortunately!) We used to play a lot of the youth clubs, i.e. Wrexham, Victoria (Viccy) and Southsea. If I can be of any assistance to Chris Dawson. Let me know! Webteam responds: Graham, perhaps you could email the photo and include your memories from this time to this website? Email: wales.northeast@bbc.co.uk
    Wed Nov 23 20:56:24 2005

    Mick John - Buckley
Having been involved with various local bands from the 60s onwards, I remember often playing alongside Dek's band at the Miners' Club in Llay and at other venues around the Wrexham & Chester area - those were the days! Not many local bands went on to fame & fortune but I think it safe to say that everyone involved in the group scene at that time thoroughly enjoyed themselves and were every bit as talented as many 'famous' musicians. In the same context as Noel's request for memorabilia of those days, Chris Dawson, another fellow local 'vintage' muso, is currently compiling a 'History of local bands and their members' and is seeking as much information as possible from any and all who can provide it. I am in the process of trying to scan my 'memory banks' to assist him - difficult at my age now! No doubt some of you out there will already be aware of his quest but, for those of you who are not, as Chris is not on the 'net' you can post your memories here and I will pass on all the gory details!
