Charlotte Jenkins NEWI / Wrexham captain Charlotte Jenkins explains a little about the North Wales Women's League which is sponsored by Amicus...

North Wales women started playing football firstly in a cup competition. This Challenge Cup was donated by Don Pickering, former chairman of the North East Wales FA, in memory of his wife Betty. Seven clubs competed in the first cup competition and it was won by Corwen Ladies Football Club in 2003.

The North Wales Women's Challenge Cup has proved to be the catalyst for the creation of a women's league in North Wales. A committee was set up jointly run by North Wales Coast FA and North East Wales FA with three council members elected. In November 2003 the first fixtures took place with the following teams competing; Cefn Utd, NEWI / Wrexham, Kinmel Bay, Llandudno Junction and Pwllheli. Amicus, the union, kindly sponsored the league and they continue to give their support.

This is a great opportunity to develop ladies football in North Wales and it is definitely going to make a difference to the future of women's football in this area. We are confident the league will grow into a strong one and the future looks bright with lots of girls teams competing in the North Wales Girls' Junior League.

A management committee has been appointed from the clubs under the leadership of Mark Hack as chairman.

If any team is interested in joining the league, contact league secretary Dave McCann on 01248 361396.
