    Environment
    Countryside Council for Wales

    The CCW is the Government's statutory adviser on sustaining natural beauty, wildlife and the opportunity for outdoor enjoyment in Wales and its inshore waters.
    The site offers a wide selection of material ranging from grants to earth science, marine issues to agriculture, landscape and wildlife protection.

    Environment Agency Wales

    Its aim is to protect and enhance the environment as well as making a contribution towards sustainable development. Site offers a search facility which can direct users to local material - and there's a children's section, including educational games.

    The Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research

    Examines a range of subjects with a farming section which looks at grassland technology transfer, legume silage for animal production and the use of red and white clovers. It also carries information on grant schemes and has a schools page.

    The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds

    Site looks at arable agriculture, livestock farming, organic and agri-development schemes. It also carries information about important areas for birds in the region.


    Farming groups
    The Farmers' Union of Wales

    Established in 1955, the FUW carries press releases and policy information on its site, as well as contact details for officers.

    The National Farmers Union

    The NFU was founded in 1904. Its site carries material on education, news and information, press releases, membership, and a variety of services.

    The Women's Food and Farming Union
    www.wfu.org.uk

    Set up in 1979 to promote understanding and confidence in British produce. Its website carries material relevant to local branches.

    Young Farmers
    www.yfc-wales.org.uk

    Rural youth organisation whose members can be aged between 10 and 26. It has more than 100 clubs in all parts of Wales. Its site carries a list of local clubs, a youth forum and a library. It also has a search facility which allows users to look at a calendar of events in their local area.

    The Country Land and Business Association

    Safeguards the interests of private landowners and rural businesses. Site offers - among other things - an attractive virtual village. Users clicking on one part of the village will find themselves moved to a CLA report on that particular topic. It also carries a list of CLA contacts for North East Wales.


    Government bodies:
    The National Assembly for Wales

    The Assembly is responsible for agriculture, foods and fisheries in Wales. Its comprehensive site offers a large amount of detailed information on a wide range of farming-related topics. Included is guidance on its Farming Connect scheme - and application forms - advice on rural stress, and the latest farming news.

    Animal welfare, the minimum wage for farm workers, horticulture, fisheries, exports and trade feature on this Government site.

    The European Commission

    Material on agricultural markets, forestry, organic farming, even European enlargement. There's also a link to the home page of the Commissioner which invites feedback on the Commission's agricultural policies.


    Livestock
    The British Horse Society

    The British Horse Society is a charity with masses of material on horses and ponies, including Welsh ponies and cobs.

    Welsh Black Cattle

    Essentially, it seems that for every specialist breed there's a website, including - naturally - one for Welsh Black Cattle.

    British Pig Association

    The site of the British Pig Association discusses breeds, exports, sales and shows.

    National Sheep Association

    Sheep farmers can browse a site packed with statistics on production, a history of the species, events and conferences, national shows, and information on ram sales. It looks at Welsh breeds and provides local contacts for members of the relevant sheep society.

    Meat and Livestock Commission

    The commission was established in 1967. Its site provides information on its work for the cattle, pig and sheep industries, along with links to its sites about meat, exports, product development, retail and education. It also has a search facility which allows users to trawl through for information specific to the locality.

    National Beef Association

    This offers information on prices, news, press releases, as well as information on animal health and a board contacts.

    The Poultry Club

    This club was founded in 1877 to safeguard the interests of pure and traditional breeds of poultry. Site offers advice on choosing a breed, handling and welfare. It includes a list of forthcoming poultry shows.


    Diversification
    The British Domesticated Ostrich Association

    Information on farming, advice on how best to fence, breed and keep them in good health.

    The British Trout Association

    Offers a wealth of information, including the fact that a French monk discovered how to artificially fertilise and hatch trout by placing their eggs in wooden boxes and burying them in sand. It also offers information on organics and a list of BTA members.

    The Welsh Beekeepers Association

    Promotes and develops beekeeping. The site contains detailed links to other useful websites, and also includes information about local contacts.


    Organic
    Organic Centre Wales

    Aims to co-ordinate the provision of advice and information to farmers under the National Assembly's Welsh Agri-Food Partnership Organic Action Plan. The aim of the plan is that 10 per cent of Welsh agriculture will be organic by 2005.

    Soil Association

    Another useful site on organics - it offers a search facility and some local links, including a food directories list.

    The Henry Doubleday Research Association

    Europe's largest organic membership group has a website offering guidance on all aspects of organic horticulture - from hot compost boxes to pest management.


    Stress and Business


    The Rural Stress Information Network

    This umbrella charity works with farming and rural support groups.

    The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution

    Provides help for people working in farming and their families who are facing hardship. It was funded in 1860 by a group of Essex farmers who were distressed by the amount of hardship suffered by others in their profession.

    The Farm Crisis Network
    www.farmcrisisnetwork.org.uk

    This group was developed in 1993 to help families involved in farming who are experiencing all sorts of problems or difficulties.

    The Samaritans

    Emotional support for people. Best to telephone the main number operateing 24-hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. Call 08457 90 90 90.

    HM Customs and Excise
    www.hmce.gov.uk

    Guidance on a range of subjects, including VAT, other taxes and duties, trading on the internet and importing a car. It also gives users access to an electronic VAT return - though it takes around two to three weeks to register for the service.

    The Inland Revenue
    www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk

    Users can locate information on all tax and national insurance issues here, including self-assessment, starting up in business, tax credits, rates and allowances. There are also contact details for all the local offices.


    Miscellaneous
    Milk Development Council

    Aims to improve the competitiveness and profitability of British dairy farmers. Its site offers news, market information, technical material, and an events diary.

    Royal Welsh Agricultural Show

    Those eager to visit the show can find all the most up-to-date information on this major event in Welsh farmers' diaries. It also incorporates material on the Winter Fair and the Smallholders Show.
