Distance: 8.3 miles / 14km
Time: 6 hours
Advice: Steep in places
In brief: An undulating walk in a figure of eight with impressive views over the Dee Valley

Maps: This map in full size
or OS map

Start: Start from the car park at the Ponderosa Restaurant at the top of the Horseshoe Pass, near Llangollen, GR 193481. Walk around the rear of the restaurant. A stile marks the beginning of the walk.

Points of interest: All the roads on these hills lead east-west until slate quarrying began on Llantysilio Mountain in 1805 and better access was needed.
The humble trackways that you'll follow at the beginning and end of this walk are lingering reminders of days when people moved about on horseback or on foot.
The walk takes you into the Eglwseg Glen climbing to Offa's Dyke Path across most barren screes below towering limestone cliffs.
They were laid down as a seabed, moved by continental drift and savage earth upheavals and finally scoured by ice over the last 300 million years.
Pass by the converted Eglwyseg Church and mill. Climb by the long abandoned Abergwern and Pant Glas slate quarries, where a hermit lived until the 1970s. Finally, walk across the lower slopes of Cyrn y Brain with fantastic views from the Shropshire Hills to Snowdonia.

More info: This walk is part of a series exploring the Offa's Dyke Path and is published with permission from Denbighshire Countryside Service which has this and other guides to walks to download on its website: www.denbighshire.gov.uk
