In brief: A walk in the Dee Valley zigzagging steeply up to Castell Dinas Brân with fantastic views, returning near the River Dee and along the canal towpath
Start: Park in the main car park in Market Street, Llangollen. GR 214420 and walk through the town across Llangollen Bridge.
Points of interest: The walk begins by crossing Llangollen Bridge, dating from the early 12th century and one of the Seven Wonders of Wales. The route climbs to the airy summit of Castell Dinas Brân. Dinas Brân is a 1,000ft hill, ringed by iron age defences. At the summit are the fragmented remains of a stronghold built by the Welsh in the 13th century. The views from this magical place are spectacular in all directions. Later you will join the canal at Pentrefelin Wharf. From here barges carried slate from the Llantysilio Mountain to English routes.
