Thomas Pennant walk

Map of one of Thomas Pennant's walks near his home... Pennant
  • Back to the Pennant walk page

  • Pennant walk number 3
If starting at Mertyn Downing, you will cross Flintshire fields and hedgerows filled with wild flowers.

The walk intersects a railway before reaching the point of the Dee estuary. It then proceeds to Whitford Church where the only memorial to Thomas Pennant stands.

Following this path will take the walker to the site of Pennant's early home in Downing, which, according to Pennant was, '...a place where I first made an entrance to this busy world'. There are only few remains of the house and outbuildings left today.
