Oxfam

Ragna at Oxfam Ragna volunteers at Oxfam in Wrexham. Here she explains why...

I've been volunteering at Oxfam for three years. I was inspired to do this after visiting my daughter in Gambia, where she worked as a missionary for some years. Travelling to an African country not as a first class tourist was a big shock to me, especially seeing the difference between the poor and the rich. The poverty level there is so big. My daughter came across a child who wasn't eating and when she asked why the child replied: 'It's not my day for eating.' That shook me. We don't know how lucky we are here - aspirin is a luxury for many people there.

I saw first-hand how Oxfam could help and it set me thinking how I could play my part. It does grate on me that we can't organise our world better, possibly because I am Scandinavian and we are a well-organised people!

Through volunteering I get satisfaction out of thinking that I'm doing something to address the stark reality of the situation, not just sitting at home. I'll stay doing this work while I can, and do my bit. It adds spice to life and you meet a lot of people.

I would absolutely recommend volunteering to other people. We are not going to change the world but we can all do our bit, even if it's only a drop in the ocean.

The Wrexham branch of Oxfam can be contacted on 01978 366766.
