Joyce Williams (Lewis), Northop Hall
To Sue Pierce, Australia. Hello Sue, ask Jeff Pierce if he remembers Joyce and Marjorie Williams' Woodbine cottages by the top shop in Northop Hall. Marjorie used to go out with David your brother before he passed away. Joyce married Myfyr Lewis. Jeff was a very good dancer every Saturday in the Northop institute.

Sorry to hear about your fall, hope it will mend well, take care. Yes I can vaguely remember the penny trick. Do you remember Lionel Gardner? Maybe you saw him on Welsh tele the other night campaigning to keep the Bangor theatre open. Good old Northopians born to serve. Next Sunday the 2nd November, we are having an interesting gathering in the URC church at the top of the High St. Back in the '30s it was passed at a methodist council meeting that on the 1st Sunday in November the 1859 revival would be remembered, and as it is the 150th year we are having Angela Bebington to give us in insight into that revival which was lead bymy great grandfather, Dafydd Morgan. So please any historians out there do join us at 2.30pm on the 2nd. November.

I have traced my great grandfather back to the Northop area and wondered if the surname of Cotterill (variations are Cotterall, Cotterell etc!) is common in the area?

I broke my right leg(tibia)in July and am now under repair.T hings coming along nicely though stairs still a bit tricky! My father (W.H.Stephens) had a few simple conjuring tricks including one with a disappearing and re-appearing old penny. I am glad some people still remember him. I was pleased to hear, Netta, about your husband's ploughing - it's a wonderful country pastime.

I am wondering where people are that they don't write on this site? I thought you might like to know that my husband, Wynn competed in the All Wales Ploughing Match down in the Radnor Valley last week. He had to plough general purpose one day and high cut the next, it was extremely hot and such a beautiful spot, easily one of Wales's hidden gems. This week he was very successful in the Cheshire match taking third place in the general purpose horse ploughing. Next year, our working horse day is on the first Bank Holiday Monday in May. May 4th is the day to visit Bryn Ffynnon and enjoy the sights of the olden days with lots of different horses from all over North Wales. Hoping to raise the profile of the North Wales Shire Horse Society while raising money for charity.

Was so sad to find out that Pam Bennet (Jackson) had passed away. I have lots of fond memories of holidays & parties held at the Bennet's, Richard's & our house. Good old days. PS Mr Stephens had a magic trick with a sixpence that he would do for us, but he retired after my first year (nowt to do with me honest).

Thank you to all the villagers for supporting the concert. We had a wonderful turnout, friends came from near and far to hear Sounds Familiar, the Mold area choir, led by Sue Acty, who, incidentally, played for our village pantomime for a number of years. It was really inspiring to feel our beautiful chapel was full of fellowship and love, and thank you to all who came and made the afternoon such a success, and a special thank you to the "clearer uppers"! See you all again we hope.

Netta Rowlands: Yes, thank you Netta, I did buy the book and there's quite a few entries of my family (Pierce) in it. My great gran Annie Pierce was known as "Mrs Pierce, the Shop" on the High street, Northop. I'm currently researching my family ancestry and, through that book, have been able to trace my other family line - the 'Piercys' who lived in Soughton, and am now in contact with many relatives around the globe. You may know Geoff Pearce from Northop? Or Uncle Edward who was in the Northop Silver Band? I live an hour south of Brisbane, in Queensland.

Did you get the Northop book that was written for the millennium?

After 30 years as schoolmaster in Northop a John Williams moved to Nercwys in 1801 and became curate there. This is from an entry in Nercwys parish record. On 18/02/1802 My g.grandfather Peter Williams was born to John and Elizabeth. I am trying to sort out if this could be the John from Northop. In the Northop records a JW married Elizabeth Davenport 14/11/1785. Does anyone know where they ended up?

Message for Netta Rowlands, from Down Under. My great granny was Anne Pierce (nee Piercy). She lived a few doors down from The Boot on the High Street (house still named TyAnn). My grandfather was David Pierce, ex-Northop cricket player (and captain who was also a County Umpire). I'm currently doing our family ancestry and was delighted to fill in some gaps through my visit to Northop last summer. Do you know Pam Jackson and husband Vince? They were good friends of my parents Jeff & Joan. I live an hour south of Brisbane.

To Tom Wynn, Stockton, Australia. Happened to notice Sarah Knott in your tree. I am not related and was on a false trail when I researched her. I have a copy of a marriage in Holywell 25/12/1824 of John Wynn to Sarah Knott. She was a sister of Robert Knott a millwright in Holywell but born Stalybridge, Cheshire. They had a daughter Emma in Harwarden 27/02/1831 when he was a miller there. I have more bits about them if you are interested. I was looking into Northop because my gg grandad was John Williams of Nerquis and might possibly be the John Williams who was a schoolmaster for 30 yrs in Northop before going to Nerquis in 1801 as curate.

Yes, Linda was a good friend of mine in the primary school, she was actually a next door neighbour, Fiveways being in between us. Netta, my brother George lived in Rock Ferry for a while. Muriel does not ring a bell. We didn't attend the school in Northop. More than likely we were there during the school holidays. We did go to a farm for eggs and tomatoes and played on the cricket field. Doreen's surname was Jones. I remember she scared us saying that the ghosts came out of the churchyard at night. Of course we believed her. Best wishes, Dorothy.

My memories of Northop go back to about 1941. We rented a Bent's Cottage by the Red Lion from a woman named Dilys whose husband was in the forces. She had a baby named Desmond. I recall being friendly with Elvira, Doreen and a handicapped girl whose name I have forgotten. My parents did not want us to be evacuated. They did their best to get us away from the blitz. We lived near the Dingle Oil Jetties in Liverpool which was a target for the Luftwaffe. As it was we had a burst barrage balloon envelope our house and incendiary bombs landing in the back yard. Coincidentlly, the bungalow in Buckley I have owned for over 25 years was were a Heinkel 111P crashed in 1941. I have a copy of the radio operator's log book. I gave a copy to James Bentley [Buckley historian] a few years ago.

I have lived here for 27 years and really appreciate what a pleasant place it is. I have enjoyed my time as a member of the cricket team and also the snooker team at the Westminster Club. It was sad day for the village when this fine club, very much the heart of the village, had to close.

Matthew Edwards from Wirral, Cheshire
Ken Hind asked in 2005 about 'The History of Northop' by Thomas Edwards - it is now available online through Google Books where it appears in two parts in "The Cambrian Quarterly Magazine and Celtic Repertory Vol IV, 1832"; part 1 pages 190-204, and part 2 pages 346-369. [This volume may not be the first result if you use Google Book search but it should appear if you click on the link to 'More editions'.] It has been fascinating to read some of the stories on here about Northop as my great-great-great grandfather John Edwards was the miller at Middle Mill or Y Velin Ganol in the mid 19th century.

Thank you Eric for your Christmas wishes to all and we old Northopians wish you well too. Regards to Rhian. Janet are you Simon's sister? Cae'r Llys being your home. Northop 2000 committee organised another good day today. Despite the weather it was enjoyable and we saw lots of old friends. The stalls in the institute were an eye opener, it is truly amazing the patience some people have to make the things they do. The street entertainers were terrific, to perform in that cold wind was heroic. Thank you to the people who popped into the chapel for a cuppa, it was a pleasure to show our newly decorated church to visitors and villagers. We have our Christmas Carol Service next Sunday the 16th at 2.30pm hopefully we will be able to welcome a good congregation and they will join us for refreshments after the service. Good health for all in 2008.

Lovely to hear from people I knew many years ago. I spent two years at Hawarden High School 1967-1969 and I remember the Shaeffer family. Tracy caught the school bus at the end of Bryn Gwyn Lane. Loiuse, that is brilliant news, well done to you all. One of my most vivid, childhood memories is opening the front door of Parkgate Farm on Christmas Day morning about noon and hearing a group of the band playing carols. They used to go up to Soughton Hall and Lower Soughton Hall and we would see them walking down the park. Then we were very privileged to be able to listen to them on our own doorstep. Thank you I'm sure Northopians have MANY proud and happy memories of our Great Band throughout the years.

To Audrey Threlfall. The name my mother mentioned was Forrester! She also mentioned that it is possible that the name you were searching for could be Enid Fellows, not Irene. Enid is my mother. Connie's funeral is this Thursday - if I have chance to speak to Les I will mention our exchange of information on his family.

To Allan Fellowes, I remember Les and Irene Wilson, their sons were Arthur and Peter. Bert's children were Beryl and Colin. My maiden name was Jones, my mother's was Forrester and my grandmother's was Conway. Are any of these the name your mother suggested? My grandmother and Mabel were cousins being the daughters of two sisters Mary and Emily Jones.

To Audrey Threlfall. My family is related to the Wilsons, though it is several generations back. I think you may be confusing Irene's maiden name - I have done extensive research in the Fellows side of our family and there isn't an Irene to my knowledge. However, Connie's brother Les married Irene Lloyd so this is where the confusion may have arisen. Could you please let me know your maiden name as my mother seems to remember visitors from the Greenfield area and has suggested a surname which may be your maiden name.

To Allan Fellows, I was very sad that Connie Wilson had passed away. I have lost touch with the family. I remember an Irene Fellows from the time that I used to visit the Wilsons. Sadly, Connie passed away earlier this week. To Samantha Hann. I have a photograph of my class in Northop V.P. school taken about 1955 and your mother Sandra is on the same picture. I remember you well from your days at Elfed High School. Your grandfather Frank Brown passed away a few weeks after my father in 1984. My dad was well known in the village as he sold fruit and vegetables from his van in both Northop and Northop Hall on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and he sold fish on Mondays and Tuesdays (but never on Fridays as incorrectly stated in the otherwise excellent publication "The Pride Of Northop").

For Candy Shaffer - are you any relation to Tracey - I went to Northop Hall School with her - did you marry Delwyn?

Rhian from Barry again
To Jan from Flint: I hope you like living in Northop as much as I did when growing up and when I come back on my hols. There are lots of nice walks round Northop - the classic one round Bakers which brings you out on the Mold road not far from the entrance from Michael Owen's or as we Northopians still refer to it as Grays/Greys. There is also the walk up Springy Lane too. It has changed a lot over the years and I'm to be convinced for the better - the plus side is that the number of houses being built keeps the school going but unfortunately house prices make it unaffordable for a lot of us Northop young-uns (well maybe not that young).

I grew up in Flint and loved it. I get lost there now but intend on doing a tour of my fave places what are left of them. At present I am in Northop and apart from Netta's riding school I do not know my way around. I came upon your site when looking up a road map for Northop which I have not found. I guess you caught my attention well and truly. Since I am renting a semi next to Northop garden centre I can recommend the farmers' market. My dad from Flint hates to miss it. I should not say try the butter cos it is yummy and sometimes has gone before I get there. However, I would not take that privilege away from anyone!

My wife Susan and I have just moved into the Old Police Station, Church Road, Northop. We have set up our photography business there. Both of us come from the area - Susan is from Flint and I grew up in Oakenholt, although my father and his forebears were from Flint Mountain. Our enquiry is...does anyone know the history of this building? We know that it became a Police Station from about 1872 until the 1930s and apparently before then, there was a pub on the site called the Bull. We have heard that the site is haunted but have no evidence of this - thank goodness! The building and its history is particularly interesting to me, as for 14 years I was a police officer with the North Wales Police (finishing in 1991) - so we would love to know more about the site. It is obviously very old - we discovered an old well (25+ feet deep in the back garden) so this must have been there for hundreds of years but records are sketchy and we know little about the building. Can you help to find out more about this building please?

Just watched the short film and so did my co-workers :) So happy to see clips of the village and the church. My sister Candy actually left Northop in 1986 not 1984 as she wrote. This is a wonderful site and I am so happy I found it. I miss Northop a lot and one day soon will come back for a visit. Another reason I am so delighted with this site as it has enabled me to get in touch with a couple of people; Netta my old brownie leader, and Rhian a good friend whom I have missed...Luv ya RhiX. BBC Thanks for making this site possible, it is totally awesome :)

Candy Shaffer (Foulkes)
Well, I just read my sister's (Nikki) comments on here and thought it was worth a try. I have been taking a trip down memory lane this week because of Nikki and I am wondering if any of my old friends are still around. I went to Ysgol Owen Jones, I was there until 83, 84 or so. I was in Mrs Hallows' class when I was really little, and I remember being in Mr Davis' class, 2nd year maybe? My friends were Catherine Doyle, Victoria Richmond, Ceri Marland, Caroline Walker, Zoe - can't remember her last name. It's been so long, but I would love to hear from anyone that remembers me. I live in the USA, and have done since 1991, I left UK in '91 after mum remarried and we went to live in Germany. Went to Bryn Coch also, in Mold, until I went to Mold Alun in 88 I think. Still in touch with Louise, my best friend there, but lost everyone else. : (
Hope to see something soon!

Does any one know of the Black Lion public House, Church Street, Northop. An ancestor was the publican (Ann Jackson) in 1881. Better still, does anyone know of ancestors of Ann Jackson, she had sons, David, James, Richard and Robert in the mid 1800s, and I have traced Robert up until 1901, when he lived at Saltney Road and Sandycroft, he was a ships carpenter. Grateful for any information

Northop has more than the college and golf course! What about our prize winning silver band and our success over the past few years in the Best Kept Village competition not to mention the bowls, cricket and badminton teams. Also, as well as the magnificent Parish Church, Northop has the United Reformed Church at the top of the High St which has services once a fortnight, on the 1st and 3rd Sundays in the month ar 2.30pm.Everyone is welcome, we have whist in the schoolroom, behind the chapel on the 1st Tuesday in the month at 7.30pm and a coffee afternoon on the 3rd Tueday afternoon at 2.30pm with a sales table and various raffle prizes. We are having a ladies choir at our service on June 17th with afternoon tea to follow, donations will be given to Help Health International, a charity the chapel has supported for a couple of years, with useful projects in Zambia and India. Good luck to Northop this summer in all its efforts to look the best, play the best and have fun helping others.

Rhian, so glad you've written on this site. Would love to see you and your children please try and come up the green next time you are home. Yes, we had fun all those years ago in Brownies didn't we? You belong to a family old Northopians are proud of. It was very nice to see your uncle Terry and his wife, Laverne, in Northop recently.

Thank you Rhian, I would love to hear what my other Brownies had made of their lives, well done. If anyone would like to come to see our shire horses, and others in the North Wales Shire Horse Society, everyone is welcome (£2 per car) on the afternoon of June 10th. It is a hands on day, have a go at long-reining and perhaps ploughing see vintage, horse drawn machinery, brasses and decorated harness. On the afternoon of June 17th at 2.30pm we are having a short service with the Drew Singers, in the chapel at the top of the High Street, lots of Northop children started their spiritual life in the Sunday school at this lovely chapel, it would be great if we could fill it on this occasion. Many of us will be the big 60 this year and it would be very fitting if we got together here in Northop to give thanks for our great gift of life. Hope to see some old faces even if it was for tea in the school room of the chapel after the service. Donations will be gratefully received for Help Health International.

Rhia Haggett (nee Williams) from Barry
Rhian again here. Meant to say that on my visits back up Northop with my children, it's very sad that the Council continue to block any such proposals to regenerate the old school. What an utter disgrace - surely it would be better for owner to sympathetically restore than let it rot to a state where it can't be fixed.

I have to agree with Netta - I too am very proud to be Northopian - I one day aspire to return to live - but in the meantime fit in breaks at my mum and dads as often as I can.
Netta - yes, I was one of your brownies - all those years ago.
Yes Nicola (Barrs) - do remember you - can't remember how to get back into FR and have mislaid your e-mail address. Hope you make it over in 2009.

Thank you to everyone who came to the Boot on April 20, it made a really good night reminiscing and showing old photos. Just sorry there were not more pupils of the school who still live in Northop. Next time we hope more will make an effort to attend. Good health to everyone.

Netta Rowlands again!
Jon did you go to Northop school? If so, we hope you will come to the Boot next Friday evening and someone will know something about the mill. It has changed so much, do you have a brother, Frank? I will try and find out some history of the mill. Keep in touch.

I grew up in Northop, my father grew up in and around Flint but in his younger years moved to Northop to "middle mill" just around the corner from the Celyn woodlands with his parents Elizibeth and John (Jack)Williams. My father is unaware of the mill's history. It has been a long time since I have been to this area of the village and the house has since changed beyond all recognition. I have been trying to research both the house and the dereclict mill adjacent but with no success. Can anyone tell me more about the mill and its purpose and if stories of both a "top" and "bottom" mill are indeed true.

To Tom Wynn. I would just like to ask how you have managed to trace so far back as the census stop at 1841? In my research i have hit a brick wall as far as this goes, any help would be greatly appreciated.
