Broughton and Saltney

The super jumbo flies over the Airbus factory, Broughton

Sammy, Broughton
I'm only 18 but I remember the walls at the shop, and the butchers - think his name was Mike - sweet Williams (I used to get a lot of sweets from there) and there was a little cafe in the corner next to the Co-op which I think has had 3 or 4 makeovers now since I've been alive. I remember the massive slide at the park too. Great days.

Kathryn, formerly Broughton Hall Rd.
Lived in Broughton all my life. My sister and I both had bedrooms that faced the woods, so we were used to the woods and the old hall. I cried for weeks when Barratts started building in 1975. Anyone remember the bread van - it was green, with steps at the rear, and the smell was heavenly!

The veg van I remember came from Handbridge. I used to help him on his rounds, but I cannot remember his name. He used to race greyhounds. I remember one was a "leaner" and was barred, so he re-registered it in my name! What with that, bookie's running, and a little bit of poaching with T, amazing I have never seen the inside of a court room. It is great reading all the comments as everyone brings back a memory.

Hi Rosemary. I always remember Wally's grocery store as an old van which used to travel round the streets - you used to walk up some wooden steps into the back of it. I think it was a pale green thing. Here's one for those of 1960s vintage - anyone remember Ditcher, the golden retriever who used to wander the streets? He was everyone's pal. He "lived" in one of the houses on Main Road, near Dr Williams' surgery.

Good day David. ...Clubby the coal man, and the mobile shop. Also, the cart with the fresh fruit and veg - was that Wally?

Hi all, great to read all the nostalgia here - I remember buying sherbet fountains at Iball's shop, the old chippy opposite the garage and Les Francis Chippy/Hairdressers. Anyone remember Wally's mobile grocery store or Charley Clubb's coal truck?
Mon Aug 25 19:34:05 2008

Rosemary, Penyffordd
Yes, Frank - like most places, Penyffordd has made some changes eg, the chippy is now a Chinese takeaway. Do you remember The White Lion on the Main rd to Penymynyndd roundabout? Well, that's still boarded up, and has been for many years. The Glynne you mentioned at Bretton has closed down, it was renamed The Olive Tree. Have you looked on Friends Reunited? Probably names and faces you will recognise from Broughton.

Frank from Lansdown
Hi Rosemary, yes mum still lives there, has Penyffordd changed much over the years? I am hoping to come over next year, most of my graduation year will be turning 60, hope to meet up with a few. Vickie the dog poo was always a problem. Over here (Aussie) when we walk our dogs we always take bags for disposing of the stuff. How long have you lived there?

Vickie, Broughton
I love living in Broughton. I have only two problems - 1) The amount of dog dirt all over the pavements and 2) The state of the Park next to the Community Centre; it's full of litter. We should take pride in where we live and clean up our acts!

Hi Frank, yes it's a shame to see the house is boarded up too. The pub next door is The King's Head, that's still there. I was told recently the Glynne Arms has closed. I think I remember you going to Australia, I know your mum, she lives in the same house too, I believe.
Mon Jul 28 13:33:01 2008

Frank J from Lansdown Rd
Cannot believe Iballs is closed down you will tell me next the Glynne Arms isn't there. What was the pub next to Isballs called? I used to deliver the Echo around the village from up the little warren to the De Havs club, for about 4 years around 1964, cold winter that one remember.
Mon Jul 28 09:33:51 2008

Rosemary Penyffordd
Anybody remember Iballs shop? We used to go in there for 1/4 of sweets out of a jar. I bet the layout is still the same behind those boards. The shop must have been closed now for nearly 40 years, and the house now I see is boarded up too, I wonder why ? What a shame to see.

To Rosemary, yes knew the Hawarden Castle pub very well. Was in there the other month and saw a beautiful old picture on the wall taken in 1900.

Mr & Mrs Watkins used to run Hawarden Castle pub in the '60s. Dad used to go for a pint on a Sunday, I used to follow up on my pony, Princess, and have a glass of red rose outside the pub. I had my own glass! When they retired, they gave me the glass and I've still got it now!

Anybody remember The Hawarden Castle pub up the Warren, now The Spinning Wheel?
Wed Jun 18 09:17:56 2008

Frank Jones, Lansdown Rd
Lived in Australia 30 years next year. I remember Les' hairdressing shed and the day they knocked it down and the fun we had on the site that was left. Broughton was a great place to grow up.

Rosemary, Penyffordd
I remember before Les had the new chip shop (where the chip shop is now) he had it as a green grocers, and he used to cut hair in the back of the shop, sitting small lads on a plank, on his big chair. Yes, so different them days. Great times we had growing up in Broughton, back in the '60s.

COLIN JONES, WARREN DRIVE
How many people remember the second Francis business in Broughton in the 60s LES in the old barn (where the Co.op is now) cutting men's hair? My dad used to help him on a Saturday. There used to be a big stag's head over the door. Broughton then was a great place to grow up; fishing in Broughton Hall - so long as you didnt get caught; poaching; taking the "Bookies Clock" to Saltney on a Saturday hidden in a newspaper in my bike's saddle bag for two and six - but a Bookies Runner was well paid. All the innocent things we did then! Very happy days.

I rememeber the old chippy well. I was in the local morris dancers, and we won the North Wales championship probably around 1969ish, and Doug Carter, the trainer's husband, said if you do well girls, bag of chips for everybody to celebrate on the way home. I remember eating them outside. I have a photo of the chippy.

To Colin Jones, it's nice of you to remember the good times in the chippy/cafe. A lot of people have forgotten about that, when there was nothing to do in Broughton. I wonder how many other people remember it from 40 odd years ago.
Wed May 14 11:31:39 2008

Colin Jones, Warren Drive
Yes, I am Colin Jones ex Warren Drive, now like you C. Jones, Buckley.

Saltney choir required!
Thank you Sue Stuart, Saltney, for the info. Will contact them. Do you know of any choirs on the English side?
Fri Apr 18 07:46:43 2008

Sue Stuart, Saltney
To the person wanting a choir from the Welsh side of Saltney, why not contact St David's High School? They have an excellent choir and performing arts school which meets on a Thursday evening. Also a thank you to whoever planted the daffodils around the area. They have really made a difference.
Thu Apr 3 10:05:25 2008

C Jones, Buckley
Yes it was my dad. Mum, dad and sister ran the chippy. Are you Colin Jones from Warren Drive?
Mon Feb 18 15:13:47 2008

Saltney choir required!
Hi, I am looking for two choirs to partake in an artwork. One of the choir should be from the Welsh side of Saltney, and the other from the English Side. Can anyone help me?
Thu Jan 31 15:33:21 2008

Colin Jones, Buckley
Yes C Jones nee Francis, I remember Smithy stores well! The cafe, was it your dad that opened that for us? It used to be very cosy! The years have just flown. Was it your dad who saved my life running me to the hostpital when I fell on a milk bottle? I think the days in the Smithy stores (chippy) were very special days.

A problem with my village I was peripherally aware of was brought to my immediate attention this week, namely the parking facilities at Broughton school. Every morning innumerable people park up outside to drop off or take their children to school, but the road only being narrow this causes congestion and frayed nerves/tempers. I was out walking with one of my dogs, we halted at the kerb, I put her into a stay, we looked left right etcetera, and the road being clear of moving traffic proceeded to cross, but unfortunatly a parent having dropped of their child/children pulled out at high speed nearly hitting us. I know it is not an isolated incident talking to people so I thought I would mention it. I am not saying stop drop offs, nor build a huge carpark for using 20-30 minutes a day either, but maybe a little care when driving off? It could be a pram or tiny toddler or worse next time.
