How many pubs were there in Rhos?

The author and family in the New Inn

Last updated: 08 September 2008

Thomas, writing from Germany but formerly from Rhos, remembers the pubs of his home village...

I can remember hanging around on Gornel bridge with my friends and listening to the older men telling stories. I remember them complaining that The Feathers pub was to be knocked down. This was over the road from the Sun Inn. They used to say that there were as many pubs as there were chapels. This is a list of the pubs I can remember (Dem is for demolished and (?) means that I am not sure if the pub is still open or not):

Hall Street, starting from the cross
The Nags Head (closed)
The Cross Foxes (Dem)
The Swan (closed)
The Sun
The Feathers (Dem)

Mountain Street
The New Inn (Dem)

Vinegar Hill
The Coach and horses

High Street
The Eagles (Dem)
The Blue Bell (Dem)
The Bull's Head (Dem)

Now I am back on the Cross and so to Bonc Wen
The Railway
The Talbot (closed)

Market Street
The Red Lion (Dem)
Church Street
The Black Lion (?)

Now the Ponciau
The Cross Keys (?)
Australia Arms (Dem)
The Royal Oak
The Colliers
The Horse and Jockey

Another drinking hole (not a pub) in Broad Street is The Hafod club (on the old site of the Pavilion cinema).

So I can remember 19 pubs in the village. But by the time I was of drinking age The Feathers, The Blue Bell, The Cross Foxes, The Red Lion, and the Australia Arms in Ponciau, had all been shut down before 1965. So I had only 14 pubs to choose from. It was never possible to have one pint in every pub, we tried, but never managed it.

Possible pub sites
I believe that there was a pub opposite the Nag's Head in Hall Street, opposite the Red Lion in Market Street, the house opposite Owen's Street was also a pub and there was one on the crossroads of Mountain Street and High Street. There was also a pub in Hand Lane, Ponciau, but I don't remember its name. And then there was Johnstown and Pen-y-Cae, far too many.

Tom, The Cross Keys has now also been demolished and apartments are being built. Glad to hear you popped in The Sun when you were over last. Actually got a couple of emails from Derwyn - with a photo of my Uncle David (Anthrax) and my Great Uncle Elwyn (used to live next door to the Sun). Let us know the next time you're over. Chris

For Meryl Dunn, hi, I used to work with you in the hardware Cefn. I see your Maureen in Air Products Club sometimes. I have 3 children and 4 grandchildren, the eldest of which is 15, youngest 20 months. Found this sight by accident, I was looking for Pant Hill. I had an uncle Wil who lived there many years ago, daughters Glena, Gwynneth and son Idwal. Love to hear from you, Chris (Jones) now Madsen.

I am interested in hearing more about the Queens Head pub. Chris Dunn says that Charles William Wright owned it. Anyone know how to research this? I believe he is a relative of ours.

I have some info on "The Old Queens Head" at the bottom of Pant Hill. The pub was on the opposite side of the road to you, Chris. It now forms part of one of our lawns. My Nain & Taid used to own and run the pub, which also used to double as a small shop. They also kept pigs in the stables. I don't remember it being open as a pub (I was born in 1950) but my father says it was still open for a few years when I was born. I have a photo of the Mill, looking down the hill from "The Wheelwrights Arms."

My nain was born in the Feathers on Hall Street, which was demolished well before I can remember (1970s onwards). Has anyone ever seen a photo of that pub? I'd love to see it and find out when it was demolished.

My great uncle Hugh McNamara had The Plough in Market Street, Rhosllanerchrugog in 1909, according to an old trade directory. Any info about the pub would be very welcome.

I've been told by Brian Dodd, one the older members of the choir I belong to, that there was a pub called The Llanerchrugog Arms which was just lower down from the milkbar towards the Talbot but, of course, long gone.

My wife and I moved to Rhos recently to a old house at the foot of Pant Hill - alongside the Brandy footpath on what became known as Spanner's Field, after the owners of the property from 1910 to the late 1960s. In researching the history of the house we found it was a part of the old flour mill on Pant Hill built around 1840. It was originally 3 houses, at each end a one up and one down, with a double sized house in the middle. After the flour mill closed, in the 1870s, it appears that part of the property became a pub "The Queens Head". This shows up in the Census details 1881-1901. The Queens Head closed some time after 1901, the property passed to Charles William Wright - on his death in 1910 the property was left to his daughter Amy Matilda Spanner. So another pub name can be added to the list of drinking houses in Rhos. If anyone can add in any detail on the history of the flour mill and property we would be very interested.

Me again! Although I am from Rhosymedre I spent a lot of my mis-spent youth in the Rhos, in the pictures which we got to from a bus which ran from the Crane on a Friday night at 6.15pm, then there were the dances in the Hafod social club, still a lovely place to go. Oh the lovely voices to be heard there, plus of course the friendly pubs.

The Sun is still in Rhos and is now being run by the Rhos Rugby Club. It is still a good pub and has a good and friendly crowd running it.

Harry, Rhyl
My mother was born in the Rhos and her sister was born there too. Both were born behind two different pubs. My grandparents were travelling show people who were based in Wrexham. In those days they had horses and living van to travel with. The whole family with others used to travel round N Wales. Today their children still do by the name of Simons. Some have settled down around here (Rhyl). My mother married a Scot and went North. They had a cinema, but before that it was a variety theatre. I was born here in the theatre changing room. I am now married to a Welsh girl for over 30 years now and live in Rhyl. my mother always called it the Rhos because of the marvellous choir.

I'm the little sister, the one that used to run around the Dafarn Newydd like a posessed demon! Some of you may remember me as The Monster or as Little Geoff. I'm glad to say I've grown up since then, a lot! It is sad to see that the pub has been knocked down as our family spent some really special times in The Dafarn Newydd. We have photos of most: The Pram Race, The Race, Red Nose Days, Sioux's 40th, Restaurant Staff, Bar Staff, and local punters that came for their usual!

Nice to see an old photo taken in our old home - Y Dafarn Newydd - The New Inn. We still have boxes and boxes of photos like that and I am preparing them all at this time to place into a photo album. It brought back a lot of memories looking at this photo and the others I found. Now when I pass the houses built on top of it I just remember the good old times many of you had there.

The Nags Head was my favourite place to go when Elaine and John were the landloards. They made everyone welcome. Elaine alwas made our sandwiches on Thursdays and Dridays at dinner time when we used to work in life guard. We would have a few largers with our dinner but when we went back to work the larger and fumes of the glue didn't mix very well!

Does anyone have any information about the old Sun & Dragon Inn in Hall Street, Rhos? It is shown on the 1840 and 1912 map of Rhos. A possible ancestor of mine, John Morris, his wife Elizabeth, their son Charles and his wife Anne lived there according to the 1861 census. In the 1818 - 1936 North Wales Directory, the publican of the Inn was a John P. Jones.

I spent most of my younger childhood in Rhos. Always staying with my Nain & although not of drinking age between the ages of 2 to 12. I do remember all the pubs Huw mentioned. First pub for a drink was the Sun & the last time was the Hafod Club. Great memories, indeed. P.S. My Nain's maiden name was 'Dunn', (Polly). Must have some link to persons you were talking to?
Mon Apr 16 09:29:51 2007

Huw Pritchard, Ponciau
Hi there I was speaking to Trisha (Dunn) today! I showed my Dad the list of pubs you mentioned, and he has added some he could remember. The other Bents pub in Ponciau was the Sun Inn on North Road.
The Griffin Inn, Bank Street
The Queens Head, Corner of Johnson St & New St
The Bulls Head, corner of Chapel St & Aberderfyn
The Unicorn opposite Capel Salem
In Rhos there was The Lion in Market St, The Kings Head Hill St, The White Lion (where the Spar is now), The White Horse (where the Co-Op is now), Forresters Y Groes, Llanerchrugog Arms, Market Street, The Sun & Dragon Hall St.
Hope these bring back some fond memories! These pubs were remembered by Gareth Pritchard (my Dad) and Les (Bala) Hughes, my Uncle.

To Meryl, Hello, how are you my dear? Nice to here from you. As for the photo, it wasn't very good as the right hand side of it was badly damaged and I had to work on it on my computer to reduce it in size. As for Joseph I don't think he was there unless he was at the bar. It was taken during a New Inn football evening. Give my regards to Joe.

Where did you dig the photograph up from Tom? And where was Joseph in the line up? I asked my grandson if he recognised anyone and with great difficulty he pointed me out. Scary stuff age. Gone are the days. Thanks for the memories.

Thanks Rhianon for the name of the pub in Hand Lane, now I don't have to put myself through a headache thinking about it. I served my apprenticeship as a Joiner with Gittins and one of the guys I worked under was Tom Pie from Ponciau. His son is Len Pie. His drinking holes were the Railway in Rhos and either the Prince of Wales or the Australia Arms. He loved to drink "Bents beer" which was why he would walk up to the Railway in Rhos. One of these pubs in Ponciau was also a Bents house. I think it was the Prince of Wales. He use to call the beer "Dragons blood". A super person that I have fond memories of.
Fri Mar 9 08:56:20 2007

Rhianon, Ponciau
The pub on Hand Lane was called the Prince of Wales so my mam informs me. Her uncle Thomas John Jarvis ran it in the 1940-50s. He then went on to run The Colliers on Chapel St, Ponciau.

The Black Lion on Church Street is still open and probably the best pub in the village. However the Cross Keys has now closed (not a moment too soon). A pub crawl now starts in the Black to the Snooker Club, The Railway, long walk to the Sun Inn, The Coach and then head down to Ponciau / Johnstown or end up in town.
