Dee and Talacre Dunes

By day, the dunes of Talacre, (SJ123848) a SSSI, are a favourite hot spot for sun-loving holiday makers. By night, home to one of Wales' rarest creatures. At one time, sand-loving natterjack toads were found along the sand dunes of the north Wales coast as far as Anglesey. But today they are limited to this one small site at Talacre near the Dee Estuary. Natterjacks became extinct in Wales during the 1960s, because of the development of caravan parks. But the species was reintroduced to the dunes five years ago.

Location: Follow the A548 north from Holywell. Talacre village is signposted on the right hand side after approx 3 miles. Park on beach or in Smugglers Inn car park.
