Holywell

Last updated: 22 September 2008

A poem about Holywell and its holy well, by Nicky Jones

Come with me to the chapel,
Come with me to the well,
Come with me to the chapel,
Come away and I'll tell....

of the holy well in Holywell Town,
a tale of desire that is renowned,
for beautiful Winefride, devout and true,
pursued and killed by Caredoc who,
rebuffed in love, cut off the maid's head,
and rued the day he tried to bed
such a saintly girl, so good and sweet,
he's pushing up daisies now in peat.

Come with me to the chapel,
Come with me to the well,
Come with me to the chapel,
Come away and I'll tell....

of Winefride's head put back on her body,
and her life returning, for that is the story,
and until this day the well does restore,
miracles happen, and what is more,
those whose hearts are driven and pure,
defy the grave and live to save,
with frankincense and violet hue,
the same is said for me and you.

Come with me to the chapel,
Come with me to the well,
Come with me to the chapel,
Come away and I'll tell....

of love and loss, of death and fire,
of pain and suffering, of muck and mire.
Say a prayer for the girl, so divine, so true,
say a prayer for her soul, it might touch you,
cut down by a Prince she never knew,
she left her body and away she flew,
and now you know just what to do,
the well and it's love is waiting for you.
