Standing Together
In response to plans to widen the A494 at Aston Hill:
We stood in protest to fight for the cause, The injustice of what they had planned.
A monstrosity road to disrupt all our lives, With so much destruction of land.
They are taking houses, destroying the trees, They want nothing to stand in their way.
But we won't stand for it, must fight these proposals, And make sure we all have our say.
We've had all our meetings, people worked hard, The commitment was second to none.
Each one played a part, right from the start, Well done to everyone.
At the enquiry we sat there each day, With hope that justice be done.
The signs are encouraging, so much to admire, From people who know what to say.
It will be a struggle, stressful and tiring, But the spirit between us is strong.
We're standing together, shoulder to shoulder, Determined to fight what is wrong.
Nowhere to play
In response to plans to widen the
A494 at Aston Hill:
Imagine what children would think,
If they had nowhere to play.
If suddenly they would find,
That it was to be taken away.
"What are those men doing mummy?"
A little girl asked one day.
Her mother replied rather sadly,
"The're going to build a big motorway."
"But that's not fair,"the little girl said,
"I will have nowhere to go."
"Life is like that sometimes my dear,
That's why we have to say no."
"But what will this mean"?
The child asked again,
"What will be happening here?"
The mother replied with tears in her eyes
Not knowing quite what to say.
"Lots of houses are being knocked down,
It's all going to change around here.
It would be very sad to see all this go,
That's why we have to say no."
What can you say to children so young,
How can they understand?
About the destruction of such precious land,
And the need to fight what is planned.
Motorway madness
In response to plans to widen the
A494 at Aston Hill:
They want to build a motorway
Right by our front doors,
Some will lose their homes
In this wasteful cause.
The effect on the environment
Will be so severe,
More pollution and more noise,
And loss of land so dear.
Roads before people
Is all they care about,
In the name of progress
They say, but which we doubt.
Sort out public transport
Is what they need to do,
But it seems "the powers that be"
Have not got a clue.
We've made our feelings known
And will carry on until,
There is nothing left to do
For us to save the hill.
Ode to peace
Every year we honour the dead,
But it never ends, there's always bloodshed.
Conflict of war, one kind or another,
Worry and anguish for many a mother.
When will this world come to its senses?
Once and for all take down its defences.
A world where nations could love one another,
Men would regard each one as his brother.
Is this a dream, or can it come true?
Please let it Lord, it's long overdue.

Break of silence
The wind sighs gently through the trees,
So softly hums the breeze.
It is so peaceful,
As birdsong breaks the silence.
So relaxed in this tranquil place,
I drift away,
On a sea of calm and timeless motion.
As dawn breaks through darkened sky,
I open my eyes.
Gathering my thoughts, I walk,
Where nature spreads her charm,
And where creation dwells.
All that matters
It is not material things
That make us who we are,
Living in a mansion,
Owning a flash car.
All that really matters
Is how we feel inside,
Accepting what life gives us,
With a sense of pride.
Making time for others
Who need a helping hand,
Not feeling sorry for ourselves,
While life drifts by like sand.
Through our lives, we may gain
Luxury and wealth,
But the real fortune,
Is our spirit and our health.
The universe
The universe was created
For every living thing,
The wild beasts that roam the earth,
For all the birds that sing.
But man was soon to change all that,
Wanting things his way.
In the time that he's been here,
Destroying it each day.
More animals are becoming extinct,
Their numbers decline every day,
Soon there will be no wildlife left
If man keeps on having his way.
There is so much that needs to be done,
To stop the destruction of land,
For if God created the universe,
Why destroy it by human hand?
The park
I like to stroll around a park
And be with nature there,
The peace and quiet that I find
Is so hard to compare.
The wild birds are calling out,
High up in the trees,
Sheep are grazing on the land
In their twos and threes.
A pheasant in the undergrowth
I see once in a while,
Rabbits with their stubby tails,
I have to watch and smile.
A squirrel plays around a tree
Running up and down,
To be at one with nature,
Beats a noisy town.
A perfect world
If we had a perfect world,
There would be no violence.
And if you wanted peace,
You could have your share of silence.
Nothing like pollution,
Or even acid rain.
Mankind would not suffer,
Anguish, torment, or pain.
There would be no wars,
Or hating fellow men.
Brother against brother,
Would not happen then.
The good would not die young,
While evil men live on.
All the races in the world,
Could always live as one.
People would not work so hard,
Just to make ends meet.
No children would need to starve,
Or go begging in the street.
It would not be a crime,
For people to be poor.
And many problems in the world,
Would exist no more.
The Timid Robin
I put some food out for the birds,
And watched as they flew in.
Birds of different kinds and size,
Have started to tuck in.
Sparrows, Chaffinch, Turtle Doves,
Are pecking all around,
But Starlings gather most of all,
To dominate the ground.
Sometimes a Robin will appear,
To see what he can find,
And it's not hard to see just what
Is going through his mind.
"I must keep my distance here
And not step out of line,
Most of these guys are too big,
I'll come back another time."
A hive of activity
"We must all do our bit you know."
The Queen said to her drone.
"I must make sure the work gets done,
to make this honeycomb.
Some of you don't pull your weight
it really has to stop,
The rest of us are working hard
till we are fit to drop.
If things don't change with some of you
who want to have a skive,
I will be forced to say to you,
you're banished from the hive."
Changing seasons
The summer days have gone again,
And autumn leaves must fall.
As the weather gets much cooler,
Nothing grows at all.
Darker nights and shorter days,
Are now with us once more.
The wildlife will hibernate,
And gather their foodstore.
Winter comes along again,
And it can get so cold,
Such a struggle to keep warm,
Especially for the old.
It is not a pleasant time
Through the cold dark nights,
And it can get very bleak,
As the winter bites.
But the springtime is ahead,
With colour everywhere,
A time we can look forward to,
That everyone can share.
Teenage recluse
You stay in your room each passing day,
At home in your usual mood.
Until needing the bathroom,
Wanting a drink,
Or in need of some food.
Your diet is almost the same every day,
It cannot be doing you good.
I wish you would talk about any thing,
Would help if only I could.
You do not see the need for conversing at all,
Keep everything all to yourself.
No good at all to be living this way,
It must be affecting your health.
You go through your life with a grudge in your heart,
And about everything wrong.
Please tell me your problem whatever it is,
With your family is where you belong.
Reflections
As I look back through my life
To when I was a lad,
Simple games that we played
Were all we ever had.
Favourite games like hop scotch, marbles, top and whip,
With a rope across the street
We all could have a skip.
Without the rumbling of tyres,
The choking fumes from cars,
We had the streets all to ourselves,
That area was ours.
Sometimes a horse and cart went by
To interrupt our games,
We got a little naughty then
And called the driver names.
The TV programmes in those days
Were adventurous,
We were inspired by them,
They meant a lot to us.
The matinee on Saturdays
Were very good as well,
When we saw the baddies
We always gave a yell.
My favourite was Flash Gordon,
A strong heroic man,
I could not wait to go again,
I was such a fan.
We also had the board games
To keep us occupied,
In those days of innocence,
That have long since died.
I think we were much happier
Than youngsters of today,
Although they have much more these days,
Contentment was our way.
The Escape
"I'm not looking forward to Christmas,"
Said the Turkey to the Hen.
They discussed the matter at great length
While walking round their pen.
"I lost so many friends last year,"
The Hen replied in haste,
"It makes me very angry
At such an awful waste."
"I did too," the Turkey said,
"And this is what we'll do,
I'll get my friends to dig a hole
So we can all get through."
They worked together scratching, scraping,
Till a big hole soon appeared,
Many of them were escaping
From the danger that they feared.
The Turkey gave a mighty shout,
Finding all had now got out,
"Just look at that," he said with glee,
"All of them have been set free,
Let's make haste while we are able,
This year we won't be on a table."
