The promise of Spring

cuckoo

By Beryl Lea

The house front's on the coast road,
Traffic passes without cease,
But the back is an oasis
Of nature, and of peace.

It's lovely to be out here
When the sun is shining down,
And the plants sport their first flowers,
We've brought some country into town.

Birds are calling out for mates,
Glad to get the winter past,
Different species, different voices,
Heralding 'Spring's here at last!'

Today the weather is ideal,
The sun's heat tempered by a breeze.
On top of the bank behind the house
Stand the loveliest hedges and trees.

The beauty here in the garden
Of every part of Nature's world,
Through wonderful, it is just a promise,
A foretaste of the summer yet unfurled.
