Mary Hughes, born 1924, says: "My great grandfather, Charles Butler, he was a baker. Butler's was the baker. My great uncle took over the bakery and he kept it with his spinster sister, Annie. They used to do public baking there, particularly at Christmas; everyone took turkeys as well as their cakes and bread. You never saw uncle Will unless he was covered in flour from head to foot. I was told by Annie Butler that she used to watch him making oven bottom loaves - a big round bit with a small round bit on the top and you'd stick your finger down the middle - well, he used to do that with his elbow!"
