Last updated: 22 May 2008

A local history book called Memories of Pontcysyllte draws together the stories of people living in the area around the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, namely Acrefair, Cefn Mawr, Froncysyllte, Garth, Newbridge, Pentre, Rhosymedre and Trevor. Below you'll find some photos and memories taken from the book. Use the form to add your memories...

Betty Thompson, born 1922: "The TA detachment here belonged to the Royal Welch Fusiliers. Every year there would be a church parade when the Fusilier Band and different detachments would all assemble at the Drill Hall. They would march in military fashion with the band leading and the regimental goat, snow white he'd be with the gilded horns and harness and a long coat like silk. They would proceed from the Drill Hill, right through Cefn, have a service in the church and then process back. Well, as children, we didn't go to the church because in those days if you said Rhosymedre, well, it seemed like miles. We used to sit on the bank near the Drill Hall and see all this activity of the assembly. Then the big command came, the band struck up and you shuddered."
