My mother, Kathleen Megan Tickner, was born in Ruthin and as a child visited "Aunt Megan" (Megan Jones & William Henry Hough Hodgkinson). She knew Arthur Hodgkinson well. My mother will turn 90 next year and in preparation for this we are writing a book on the Tickner family. Am interested in getting in touch with John Hodgkinson or any other person with information concerning the family.

I was approached around a year and a half ago by the owners of the Ruthin Picture House, the old cinema in Ruthin, to create a restaurant and bar in this fabulous old building. As you may know now the venue is open and is having great reviews. In the design process I tried to use typical cinema cues such as the central vista walkway and grand voil fabrics. This I hope complemented the building's integrity and gave a modern slant on contemporary dining. I will email the venue owners and ask if they have any old pictures.

Recently visited Ruthin on discovering my mother had lived there with her 2nd husband, Reg Stevens, in Maes Hafod. She was Kathleen and died many years ago leaving two children Selwyn and Angela Stevens. Does anyone remember her? They lived in Cyffyliog before Ruthin and after her death Reg stayed in Ruthin until his death in about 2002.

Ali Condon (nee Hughes). Did your 'Nan Ruthin' Mrs Annie Wilson live at no:1 Porth-Y-Dre? If so, then I remember her well. My gran, Mrs Olive Lloyd Davies, was a friend of hers, and used to perm her hair for her. I used to go to visit Mrs Wilson with my gran when I was a child, and was very fond of her indeed. She was a lovely lady. Tea and biscuits by the coal fire, and I used to love the 'Grandfather clock'. Happy memories!

I have a Thomas Woodfin Jones on my family tree. He was the son of John Jones b. 18 Sep 1858 in Ruthin and Elizabeth Ann Williams b. 13 Sep 1861 in Liverpool. I would love to know more on Ruthin. The family house in SA was called Clwyd house and my husband's grandfather (John Townley Jones) pasted a picture of Denbigh Castle in every book he read.

I have only just discovered this site, and the posts by Lauraine Palmeri and Arwel Parry are of particular interest to me, in a smuch as they mention people and places I know, or rather knew. My uncle, John Stephenson, bought Rhiwisg in the 1940s (I don't know exactly when) and farmed there until the 1980s. My father, Jim Stephenson, worked with him in the mid-late 1950s and after I was born (1954) we lived at Rhiwisg until about 1960. I remember Bob Morris from Rhesgoed too, and, if memory serves, he purchased some of the land adjacent to Rhesgoed when my uncle retired and sold the farm.

To Ali Condon, Just stumbled into 21st century! I guess your Mam is Pat Wilson? I worked with her dad, Billy Wilson, in the '50s - a real gent. He previously worked in the munitions factory at the goal and served with the local fire brigade.

Hi Emma, I'm your dad's first cousin. I remember your dad, your uncle Graham & your grandparents very well! Although, Graham was quite young the last time I saw him (1973) I shared their bedroom a few times when we stayed in Wales. Your dad was somewhat taken by detective novels & gangsters back then lol! Please say hi to both your dad & Graham for me when you see them! They also came to stay with us in Andover as well. Emma, your grandparents were both lovely, I can't believe that they are gone :( I had some great times with your dad in Cyffylliog. Your dad had an old BSA Bantam motorbike. Although I seem to remember that most of our time was spent trying to start the jolly thing rather than riding it, lol! I also remember being out shooting with your uncle Stephen & accidentally shooting him in a rather delicate place (his fly!) with his air rifle & then trying like hell to make sure he was OK so that parents didn't get involved lol! :0
Hi Francesca, are you still here in Aust? I'm your mum Tracey's first cousin. I remember your mum & dad quite well from the trips we made to Wales when I was a kid. I had a beer with Peter when I was over in Canberra about 17 years ago with the army. Please say hello for me if you're still there! It'd be great to catch up if you're still here!

My grandparents lived in Greenfield Rd, Ruthin, and my dad Arthur Morris Edwards grew up there. My grandad was clerk to Brymbo Parish Council between 1914 - 1932, he died in 1945 or 1946. I remember many happy school holidays spent with my grandma Sarah Elsie Edwards in her house in Greenfield Road. A long time ago but does anyone recall these people?

I accidentally came across this site while looking for old info of Clywd St, Ruthin, and saw a message I wrote about my memorable trip to my father's homeland. He always said, 'Wales was Wales before England was born' and I am so happy that I got to see what I only heard of, and got into the old house where my Jones family lived. The Welsh are fantastic people and I'm proud to be Jones.

Hi to Phil Edwards. It's really nice and a bit weird to meet members of my family on here who I have never met. Just had a quick conversation with my dad (he said hello!) who explained who you are. Did Uncle John used to work in a furniture shop in Ruthin? I remember that one of my Taid's brothers did. Are you still in the area?

I have just returned from a trip to Ruthin and took a picture of the large shop on Well Street, which overlooks the railway line. It has painted on the side wall a large sign, 'Station Shop and Owen'. It is painted black on a white background. In the 1936 Bennetts business it was O.R. Owen, grocers and baker. Is there any way of finding out when they stopped trading? Cheers, J.

I was looking through these photos of Ruthin and discovered the picture of Bryn Ffynnon submitted by Roger Edwards. This was the house where my grandfather was born, and the family lived there for at least 100 years. I have a copy of the photo given to me by the current owner of the house, but would love to know more about it - who took it for example. I assume from census records that the people shown are my gg-grandfather, possibly my grandfather, and a couple of his sisters, but would love to make contact with Roger Edwards to find out more.

Terry Roberts, born Ruthin 1958, now West Yorks.
It's lifted my spirits to see so much about Ruthin, and so many people with such fond memories. Ruthin was home for Dad, Harold Roberts, from a family who ran a cobblers shop below the Grammar School. His father, brothers (and himself) were very much into athletics in the 1930-40s. Does anyone have any knowledge of this? If so, I'd be delighted to know.

We lived in St Meugans until about 1958, when i was 4 years old. Older residents may well remember my father,Arthur Hodgkinson who was born in the Park Place Hotel and later ran Bridge Garage. He was quite well known locally. He married my mother, Hilda, at Llanfwrog church on 10th August 1946. My sister, Julia was born in 1948 and christened at St. Peters. I was adopted in 1954 and christend in Llanrhydd. My godmother Annie Edwards,(we've always known her as 'auntie nan') now lives in Llys Erw. My uncle and auntie Donald and Nora (dad's sister) lived on Denbigh road, and his other sister Ena lives in Barnsley. His father, William Henry Hough Hodgkinson, mother Mary and stepmother Megan are all buried in Llanfwrog. I would be interested if anyone has any memories of members of our family. Diolch yn fawr.

Hello Wally Brodie, You may have known my father's family who also lived in Bontuchel in the 40s. The Roberts family lived in a small row of houses just up the hill from a very steep s curve. In response to Lauraine Palmeri, I lived just the other side of the hill at Bwlch-y-Parc in the 60s and 70s (my parents gave up the farm in 1984), and in my time Bob Morris, Rhesgoed, used to farm the land nearly up to my bedroom window! I suppose Bob and Mrs Morris must have come to Rhesgoed fairly soon after Lauraine's family left - they're among my earliest memories in the early 60s anyway, I recall Mrs Morris coming to our house to tell Dad that my Taid had died as they had a phone and we didn't. Mr and Mrs Morris died within a few days of each other a few years ago, and the new owners have set up a Farm Shop there. Their website (www.rhesgoedfarmshop.co.uk) has some nice pictures of the area.

I was evacuated to bontuchel, ruthin, 1940. Lived there for several years in various farms. I remember old Dick Dunne, the hobo, and worked many days along side of this very unique character. Lived with Peter and Gladys Rennie. Pete was the local coal merchant, and also had a timber buisiness. I have travelled throughout the world, and my most treasured memories are of Ruthin and the villages in the valley. Having visited many times over the years, Bontuchel has a very special place in my heart.

Ruthin has some great history and just seeing pictures of the Vale reminds me of many memories. I remember the railway line and also the property before the Craft Centre was built at the former location of the railway station. I can still remember the railway line being a great place to play until some of it was filled in from Denbigh Road to top of Wrexham Road.

Lauraine Palmeri from Ingleton
I was evacuated to Llanbedr with my mother and grandmother where we lived in an old farmhouse called Rhesgoed between 1940 and 1947. My mother and I used to take the bus on a Saturday for my once-a-week private tuition in the three R's with a nice teacher near the Station called Audrey Lloyd. I spent two hours with Miss Lloyd while my mother did the shopping, then she'd collect me for a trip to the library followed by a fish and chip lunch in the corner cafe opposite the Castle Hotel. We'd go to the "pictures" at the cinema and then take the bus home laden with shopping for the week. We were often snowed up in winter and had to dig ourselves out. Washing was done in the copper beside the range or in a galvanised tub outside, where my grandmother used much elbow grease to get the clothes clean on the washboard. I'd love to know who lives at Rhesgoed now. At the time, we knew very few people as the house was isolated and I never went to school. But I do remember dear old Mr Jones who lived at Rhiwisc and the Roberts family a few fields away, the Morrises who delivered our milk, and Miss Evans who ran the Clwyd Gate Cafe up the hill.

I lived in Llanbedr 1974-1990. Many thanks to all the people who have taken time to remind me of the wonderful town of Ruthin where I spent many happy days both in school and later working. I miss its charm and look forward to visiting soon.

In reply to Karen's question - I really loved being back in Ruthin, and met up with some old friends, including an ex Ysgol Brynhyfryd pupil who now lives in Australia. John and I had a great time re-visiting our old haunts, and remembering all the good times we had growing up in that wonderfull old town. I still keep in touch with many ex-Ruthinites on Friends Reunited, it seems we have spread far and wide across the world!

We are looking for a photograph of the old Ruthin Cinema in Well St. We think it was called the Picture House, anybody have any details?

What a wonderful site dedicated to the beautiful town I was born and raised in and it's lovely to see messages posted from people who have never forgotten their time here, I know the name Gavin Douglas and was pleased to see a message on here from him, would be interested to know what his thoughts were on the town after a fifteen year gap. Love the photos, thank you Mr Edwards.

My wife and I lived in Ruthin from 1986 to 1989, when I was a Senior Cameraman with HTV at Mold, we have many happy memories of the town, and were there last in October 2005,and were pleased to see it still retains its unique character.
