Did anyone know Liz Geran, who worked at Southport hospital/nursing home? Around 1970s?

Clwyd Wynne, Denbigh
To Mr Ken Vaughan. If you would like to get in touch through our website www.northwaleshospital.ik.com we have some information about your grandfather's time at the hospital and we would be interested to see any photos or information you may have about him.

It's great to read all the comments from staff who worked at the N.W Hospital, particularly from an ex-colleague, namely Helga Lloyd who I trained with and have fond memories of. Both Helga and Barry Skinner were such a good laugh to be with.

I was a student nurse from 1988 to 1991 then worked on EMI Gwynfryn for 3 years. It was the best years of my life. I also lived in the nurses home for 5 years. I have been watching Most Haunted. I wish they came out with the ward names cos I don't recognise the hospital any more. I think it is awful. The builder who bought the building should have looked after it better. I makes me cry when I look at what was once such a magnificant building.

Does anyone have photos or info about the following people/persons who worked in NWH? Muriel Eluned Cooke(Williams), William Williams (Bill Jingles), also Clwyd Prydderch and Mari? Think it would be in '60s / '70s. Attended "Most Haunted" on Monday - utter rubbish but buildings wonderful. Wish I had worked there. What an experience!
Webteam replies: We're talking about the Most Haunted programme in our dedicated North Wales Hospital site.

Hi Chris from London. The best photo site I have found is this one: opacity.us/gallery118_the_castle_and_the_asylum.htmIt is a great gallery with some very atmospheric shots. We went there last night to see a show and walked round it. It is in a very poor state of repair but absolutely breathtaking from the outside. Strangely, it was not frightening at all, just very sad to look at as a comparison to some of the old photographs on here.

My father Harold Roberts was the head store keeper (I think from 1950s to 1980s). Anyone have any photos of him? I now live in Spain. Would love to see some photos.

My grandfather was the Head Attendant at the N W Hospital in the 1930s-1940s. He was Mr Collins. He lived in Parc y Twll.

I started off working in the "mental" on work experience in 1982 and the was taken on as a full time nursing assistant. I met a lot of wonderful people there - staff and patients. Mair was one of my ward sisters and Eirian Richards, who unfortunately died very young after a tragic accident. I have many memories, including catching a train to Cardiff with a number of staff including my mum Phylis who worked there too. We were going on a ralley to protest about low pay, I think. I think it was a big loss to Denbigh when it closed as a lot of jobs were lost. It would be a great place for a developer to buy and provide more jobs for Denbigh.

Tina Royles from Cheshire
My dad: Keith Royles worked at the NWH for many many years (he's 71 yrs this year) and I can remember attending as a youngster with my sister the Christmas pantos and walking back to my dad's ward along the huge corridors. I can also remember when I passed my driving test and dropping my dad off at work many times and driving up the long entrance in the early hours of the morning. What an amazing place but also it was an eerie one! Beautiful place, full of history - it's sad to see the place in disarray.

Was wondering if anybody could send some recent pictures of the grounds and inside the asylum. I would also be very intrested in looking around the place myself as I used to live locally to it. If anyone has pictures or knows who I should contact to see the inside please email.

My paternal grandmother was in the hospital from about 1917 to 1953. Like many of your other contributors, I am desperate to learn more about her life there.

My great grandfather:- Robert Owen Thomas was admitted to the Hospital on 29th August 1916, aged 45, his patient number was 8740. He died on the 5th September 1916 and I do hope he didn't suffer too much. If anyone has any information about him, I would be very grateful.

Catrin Jones (Katie)
What a lovely site - brings back warm memories. I trained and worked at the hospital as an SEN in the 80s and quite honestly, they were fantastic times for staff and patients alike. How sad to see the old place now. Pity it ever closed.

I would really like to go to see this building with my daughter, who is highly intrigued. Is there any way in which we can get in contact with the people who may permit us entry in the building. Thanks, Billy.

Robert Neville Jones's comments about being pharmacy manager reminds me of an earlier holder of the title, Mrs Selina Chisholm who had the job from the end of the war to about 1956 or so when she then returned to her native Australia. I met her there several times as my life at sea took me to Sydney on a regular basis. She had a Vauxhall Wyvern car that was one of the few ever parked "at the front" at the time.
Fri Nov 30 14:55:24 2007

Robert Neville Jones
I worked at the "mental" as Pharmacy Manager from April 1990 until I was moved to Glan Clwyd Hospital in 1999. I must say that it was the best 9 years of my working life! I hope that most of the staff (and patients!) I came into contact with might remember "Bob the Pill", especially those on Bryn Hyfryd, Erddig and Dyffryn wards. Cheers to everyone!

I am trying to find out about my great aunt whose name was Bridget James. Bridget never married and I believe she had some sort of breakdown. As I understand it she fell in the hospital and banged her head which led to her death. I think she died in the late thirties, early forties. I would be so grateful for any information.

If anybody would like pictures of the inside of the 'Asylum/mental' then contact me. The pictures are recent, it's very much decayed now but some parts are in okay condition. It's a shame this is happening to the building. If young kids didn't smash or steal everything they saw, the place may be in better condition.

Hello! I also find Denbigh Mental Insitution very interesting and amazing! They could convert that place into something nice like a retirement home or perhaps a university. You could do a lot with the land if you people would act fast before it rots away! What's with all the windows open as well? I have recently been past the building and it was just amazing - I was gobsmacked! It is just a shame what people have done to it :( I am 19 and I am ashamed of what my youth has done to the place! People do something useful get petitions out to save the building! I am also writing a paper on Denbigh Mental Insituition.

I remember attending the Xmas parties at the NW Hospital and having a great time. Many members of my family worked there, including my dad, Dai Davies, the upholsterer/photographer Eric Davies, painter Harry Jones and my sister Shirley and more I'm sure. I worked on Afallon Ward from 1984 with the best work colleagues anyone could wish for and included Angela Smith (now Dodd), Pat Williams, Liz Shoosmith, Jan Steele, Myfanwy Jones, George Dunn (of course) Andy Prescot, Laurence Walters, Mike, Margaret, Jill and our dear Gwyneth. Well those were the days. What a shame it closed and has been left to rot.

Does anyone remember Gwylam Edward Hughes who was a male nurse at the Hospital and then was Night Superintendent before his retirement some 30 years ago?
Mon Aug 13 11:27:31 2007

Robert Frost from Tasmania
I was born (1939) and brought up at the hospital while my father acted as Clerk & Steward (and later group Secretary) between 1938 & 1967. For a child it was a magical place to be brought up in involving a farm (Bob Evans)- (sheep, cattle, pigs, horses, tractors, milking with Mr Moore, grain milling, the thrashing machine, a big fire in the barn); a market garden (with Tommy Davies and Mr Hughes), the engine room, the coal hole boiler room, the blacksmith's shop, the cobblers (with Tommy Davies), the seamstress Miss/Mrs Davies, the laundry (with Miss Smith), the kitchens (with the major), the bakery (with big Bob), working in one's holidays amongst the plumbers, the joiners (Mr Middleton), the electricians (Maldwyn), the drivers (one of whom was in bomb disposal during the war - what stories!), the upholsterers (Mr Griffith), the painters (Mr Pearce), the wonders of the dispensary run by an Australian lady Mrs Chisholm, and so on and so on. What a privilege for a young lad! I went to sea at the age of 16 although Denbigh remained my home for a number of years afterwards.

My late mother-in-law was a patient and died in the North Wales Hospital in the late 50s. Her name was Rebecca Shevloff. Myself and my brother-in-law would be interested in hearing from anyone who remembers her. My late husband was always very vague about how she came to go there, I have always presumed she had some form of dementia, it would be nice if we could see her case notes. I do not know if Dr Dafydd Alan Jones was there then, my husband had connections with the hospital and helped to get some patients back into the community liaising with Dr Dafydd Alan Jones when care in the community was first thought of. We would be grateful for any information.

Sarah Lloyd, Barnsley.
My mother was a patient at the hospital in the early 70s, her name was Joyce Evans. I would like to know if there is anyone who might remember her. As I myself work with adults who have mental health issues I would like to get hold of her notes, a long shot I think but can anyone help?
Mon Jul 23 10:46:17 2007

Bob Heath from Staffordshire
Traced my great grandad, Alfred Beaumont, who worked as a male nurse at Denbigh Hospital. It was there that he met and married Mary Ann Howlett. They married in 1901 in Knaresborough (York). We had no idea as to their whereabouts over the next ten years until I just viewed this site. The third picture, taken in 1905 of the hospital football team and the gent, far right bottom row, is my great granddad. What a result!
Mon Jul 2 08:53:10 2007

I recently renovated the old day centre across the road. The three buildings are very eerie now. If anyone can help me I'm really interested in looking round the old hospital, please help.

I would like to make contact with the PTS Group of February 1962. Anyone still about except for me or are we all pensioners now?

I am amazed at how many people from all over the country are concerned about what happens to the building. It certainly would be a shame if it is left to to go to ruins. Surely someone must have some good ideas. I would like to know more about it.

Hello Helen Merrick. (I have only just read your comments). Please get in contact via this website. Would love to hear from you. Many, many happy memories working at the hospital and of the parties that I used to attend as a child.

This is a fascinating site. My mother worked as a nurse there from 1944 - for about ten years - and my father also worked as a nurse from 1948 for several years. My mother Kathleen Eleanor, who is 82 was only telling me yesterday how much she loved her time in Denbigh, and my father David Oliver agreed wholeheartedly.

I went there today, its scary, and thought it was strange that things are still in the building. The place is falling apart and isnt safe. does anyone know why the hospital was closed down?

I trained and worked at NWH from 1982 - 1986, many happy memories. I still work in Mental Health in Lincoln. I often wonder what happened to all the people I met there. Are there any phots of that time? Sadly I only have one of me in a white uniform on Tryfan Ward!

Jean Weigh. Buckley.
My father's sister Annie Griffiths from Buckley was a patient for many years from the 1930s to the 1960s when she moved to Nant Hall in Prestatyn. I can remember being taken to visit her at Denbigh, the place looked huge to me as a small child. My aunt used to be allowed to go into Denbigh shopping for the staff and she used to write to me about once a month and send me sweets. She was such a gentle quiet person and I often used to wonder (and still do) why she was there for all those years and whether things may have turned out differently had she been given modern day treatment - it seems to me to have been a life wasted but having said that, she always seemed to be quite happy and spoke highly of all the staff. I wonder if anyone is still around who would remember her.

I have been reading through the comments and realise some of these people would have known My grandfather who died in the Hospital in 1961. I would love to know what kind of man he was I have heard he did a lot of painting. How else did he fill his time? My grandfather was in Denbigh Hospital for about 35 years. His records don't exist any more. I have made an attempt to get them because I wanted to understand. However I have been told he was a wonderful painter, I wonder is there one of his pictures left? I have nothing of his not even a grave marker. I can't think of anyother way I could achieve my goal to have a little of him in my home. His name was Gwilym Henry Jones and he died in October 1961 at Denbigh Mental Hospital.

My husband's great aunt Anne Pickin was a patient from 1909 until her death in 1944. She was placed in the hospital by her parents after having an illegitimate son, Noel. She was buried in the cemetery at Denbigh Hospital.

I was given a tour around the hospital about three years ago by the groundskeeper as myself and a friend were scouting potential filming locations. The place was in pretty bad condition, I gather it's no longer safe to enter. I took a fair few photos of the place I might see if I can get some of them put up here if people are interested. A very strange and eerie place to visit.
Fri Nov 3 11:19:23 2006

Mike Roberts from Thetford, Norfolk
Does anyone know what happened most commonly regarding patients who died at the hospital? Are they most likely buried in a cemetery nearby or would the authorities contact a living relative if possible so they could be transported back to the town or village where they came from? My great great grandmother was admitted in 1885 and died in the hospital in 1916. I have her case notes but they seemed to end in Jan 1915. She was originally from Penmaenmawr.

Mari Williams, Denbigh
Fascinating site, it is wonderful to see the old photos, but I wonder whether there are any photos of the eighties and nineties available to view? This is a beautiful building and I have stood and admired it many times, my favourite being on a cold frosty morning with the winter sun defining its outlines. I swear you can feel its past and almost hear its voices as you stand and absorb its atmosphere. Its closure was a big loss to the community of Denbigh, indeed a loss of a community in its own right. Sadness...

I have been trying for some time to find out more about Denbigh Hospital as my Grandfather died there. Just to see a picture of it and hear from someone who had worked there saying it was a nice place to work made me feel better. I never knew him and did not know he was in there until 1961 when he died.

I am only 12 years old and even I can see, it is such a shame seing such a lovely building and area to go to waste as the north Wales hospital has. If someone at my age can see that what would the older generation be thinking.
Mon Oct 2 11:11:19 2006

I enjoyed the old photographs very much. The hospital should be restored and used for tertiary education Please be guided by my old school friend Dr. Gwyn Thomas on what should be done now.

It is good to hear from you Andy and Pam and that you are still in the mental health service. So many people around the world echo your sentiments about the training they were given in the North Wales Hospital. Thank you very much for your comment about my book which is much appreciated. If you want to see more about the hospital we have a website northwaleshospital.ik.com and you can post a message on the site to your old friends. All the best. Clwyd

Thanks to the North Wales Hospital staff and patients for a wonderful start to our careers in mental health. Both Pam and I thoroughly enjoyed our years at Denbigh 1980-87. We are still nursing in mental health. Thanks Clwyd Wynne for an excellent book.

For the future generations a story is not enough, a building like this should be preserved and given a new lease of life as was its purpose for so many poeple in the past it now needs us to help it. Preserving a siginficant part of Denbigh's history will benefit us all in the short and long run.
Tue Jul 25 07:55:57 2006

Jasmin, Anglesea, North Wales
It should stay, it's a cool piece of history and it gives Denbigh a difference. If they make it into somthing else it will ruin the memory of the asylum. But people should be allowed in but with a price to keep it like it used to look. A museum about the hospital would be a good idea I think to keep it alive and to show people what an important part of history and life this is and was. I myself go to school in Denbigh and find it intriguing to have something almost forbidden about it, it atracts people to it and makes Denbigh a place of interest and if we're lucky maybe most haunted will come and check it out!

Hey guys this is a great site by the way, I'm from Colwyn Bay and me and a few friends travelled over to the building last night around sunset time, it's a beautiful building. Keep the building and do something constructive with it, don't let it rot away.

It would be good to see the floor boards replaced (as many have fell through) and the building in general strengthened and turned into flats or some other useful building.

It's bigger than I thought. i lived in denbigh for years and only moved out two years ago. If they're going to let a fine building like that go to waste then they don't deserve it.

Why wasn't the old Nurses home used for the Ablett Unit now at Glan Clwyd Hospital? Surely it would have been an ideal place, it's in a lovely position and would have been ideal for the staff and patients. Unfortunately by the time something is decided on what is going to happen to the North Wales Hospital site, it will be nothing more than a mound of ruins. Who will be sorry then!

Been to visit the site recently - it's a shame that the building is in a bad way. It should have never have been closed down. My father worked in the kitchens when he was younger. I've been told that it is all going to be converted into flats and houses will be built on the grounds.

would like to see the nwh turned into a museum, like they have done to ruthin gaol, guided tours of the whole site would soon turn it into a tourist attraction, and it would also bring visitors to the area, putting denbigh on the tourism map.

I remember carol singing to the staff and inmates in the late 1970's as a former member of Cor Meibion Trelawnyd. A wonderful experience in a unique building. Afterwards, we all retired to the Nurses' home for some well earned libations and even more carols!

I am thrilled to see a picture of my mother Hazel Jones in the prize giving photo of 1958 i can recognise two of mum's old friends. My mother devoted her life to working with people with mental health issues. She is now retired .Mum has many, many memories of working at the hospital as do many of my other relatives.

Have just found this site after receiving a copy of the death certificate for my Great Aunt, who died in the hospital in 1957. I have letters to the family from friends of hers (presumably fellow patients) who were with her. Fascinating reading.

My Dad Osborne Davies worked there in the early 40's. He has some fond memories of working there and from the stories he has told me wish I have a lovely impression of the hospital. Wish it was still around to carry on the great work my dad and others did there. My dad too features in a couple of the photos!

I am a Psychiatrist and a Psychoanalyst in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. I was a Senior House Officer in Psychiatry at the North Wales Hospital in 1973/74. I have very fond memories of my stay there. I lived in the doctor's apartment above the switchboard with my wife and few months old daughter Ami who was born at St.Asaf while I worked at the hospital. Best wishes to all who are and were connected with this fine insitution of caring and service.

I visited Denbigh recently, and accidentally stumbled across the history of the former mental institution in the Library. I am absolutely fascinated by the place, and believe that it is vital that something should be done to stop it falling into complete disrepair. It has been built, looked after and mantained by our past generations, and it is not our right as the present generation to allow it to be destroyed by vandals and left to decay. There isn't much time until the whole building is lost. Please help the building now, while it is still possible to.

Does anyone know if a Lilian Jones worked as a nurse here? She was born Dec 1912. She left Wales to work in England and in 1939 and 1940 she worked at Darvel Hall Sanitorium, Sussex, England. Her father was a colliery official named William Jones. He was dead by 1940. Regards Diana

Good to see photos and the site, I have fond memories of 'The Mental' as a former CPN working in North Wales. I visited the site last year to take some photos, it's a shame to see it now.

Every ward had its own photo albums of holidays and outings, I wonder if any of them are around? The time I spent at the the hospital was a happy one, I left in 1984 to move to join the new EMI support team in Wrexham. It would be very interesting to see more photos from the hospital from the 70s and 80s if they are around. A good and interesting web site.

Nice to see photographs of historical interest. Even if they are mostly of staff and not patients. Having known patients at the hospital it would have been nice to see them. The other gripe I have with BBC web pics, is that they could be a bit bigger.
