Your site has put me in touch with two of my very close and dear friends from way back, over 60 years back. I'm so grateful to you for that. I have lived in Australia since 1963, but it has brought me so much closer to Wales and my friends. So I would like to say thank you, it's been so much fun reminiscing. Your site is simply the best, putting friends in touch again.

My memories are of the Parry-Jones family in Pentre Broughton who had the Post Office and Bakery years ago. My aunt and uncle Hilda and Glyn lived at Windy Ridge after living in one of the two cottages next to the Bakery. Who can remember the wonderful bread that they baked that you were able to get hot out of the oven when the butter would melt on it?

Lovely to hear that you remembered my mum. Mena and I used to almost live at your house. I am over the moon that through this page Mena has sent me an email. My late brother's wife, Sheila, also now has got in touch with you via this page.

To Audrey Davies (nee Wynne). I have a faint recollection of you, but I remember going to visit your mother with mum for a cup of tea and a chat after school. Those were the good old days. I believe you were in school with our second cousin Mena who lives in Brisbane, Australia. I have been out to see her once and hope to go again soon. It's nice to catch up on this site.

Hi Gillian. I read your post asking if John Bagshaw who wrote the book Broughton Then and Now was from New Broughton. Yes he was, although he was somewhat older than me, I remember his mother and his younger brothers.

I think this is an excellent site, I used to live in Brynteg until 1963 when I moved to Australia. It is good to recognise people I've not heard of or seen since my school years. I would love to get in touch with Audrey Davies (nee Wynne) who wrote a section on this site about us being good friends. You have already put me in touch with another close friend whom I've not heard from, or seen, for over 40 years and now we email regularly. Enjoy your site so much. Thank you.

Does anyone have any old photos or information about the old shop on Daisy Road? We believe it was run by two sisters (Cissie and Jessie Pope?).

Hi Gillian and Lynne. Your cousin in Brisbane was a good friend of mine, can you please say hello to her from me. I remember your mother Gwen and grandparents. I lived next door but one to Shereen.

To Keith Parry. Your wife Janet should remember me as I lived at 3 Hywelfa and we used to play together when we were growing up. It would be nice to hear from Janet and Sherinne.

Keith Parry (Southsea)
Hi Gill, I am sorry but I don't know where John Bagshaw came from but he did a lot work with the history society in Brynteg. As for Sherrinne, I married her cousin, Janet Roberts from Hywelfa. I have no doubt she would love to hear from you at some time.

I lived in Brynteg up until 1970. I attended Brynteg Secondary Modern School at the Top of Quarry Road from 1963-1968 I then went to Wrexham Technical College. My maiden name was Gillian Bellis. I have a sister, Lynne Bellis, who is at present visiting our cousin in Brisbane, Australia, I see has recently put comments re: Alun House 3 Roberts Road Brynteg. Roberts Road was the hill that came up alongside Pope's Sweetshop, I always called in from school (Brynteg primary school) everyday for sweets. It is now a house.Could I ask Keith Parry if John Bagshaw, the person who wrote Broughton Then and Now was from New Broughton? Also, I remember a friend of mine who lived next to Brynteg SM school on Quarry Road, SHEREEN MATHIAS, she loved singing and when we were in school she formed a group (Shereen and The Facts). They went on Opportunity Knocks and won, if I remember rightly. They did a gig afterwards in the Old Picture House in Pentre Broughton (THE PALACE). Does anyone remember?

Lynne Bellis, Towyn.
To John Williams, Cheshire.
Alun House, 3 Roberts Road, Brynteg, was on the top left hand corner of Roberts Road with a frontage on to Quarry Road which was directly opposite the Woodwork and Cookery departments of Brynteg Secondary Modern School. These old buildings were demolished and there are now modern houses on the site next to the old recreation ground. I am writing this email from Queensland in Australia, because I'm visiting my cousin who used to live in Alun House when she was a little girl and she is now 73 years old. She remembers moving to live in Alun House after moving from a house further up the village near Graigwen belonging to Frank Williams.

To Lynne Bellis, Towyn, Abergele. Can you give me any clue so that I can narrow down where Alun House (No. 3) is on Quarry Road, Brynteg? There appear to be two No. 3s. Where is it near or next to, or do you remember a postcode?

Keith Parry, Brynteg
Hello Brian, I remember you. We used to play together. As for your request, there are photos of Brynteg infants and top school in John Bagshaw's book, Broughton Then and Now. A very good book about our community over the years.

I used to live in Brynteg with my family up to 1966. My father Meurig Jones had a mobile green grocery business in the area and I attended Brynteg Secondary Modern School at the top of Quarry Road from 1960-1964 (the last time I visited the area it was demolished). We used to live in Laburnum House, just off Quarry Road and I well remember the area. As a child we went to Poole Mouth Chapel and can recall the Sunday School anniversaries etc. Also, regular summer trips to Rhyl were a highlight. Have tried to find pictures of the old Brynteg Secondary Modern School but have been unable to do so.

Can anyone with local knowledge help me I am trying to trace my family. My granny was Hannah Jane Williams she lived in a house called Daisey Bank in Brynteg. There were 11 children and she was the youngest. She left to go into service at Little Sutton, married and became Hannah Flavell. She had five children Harold, John, Gwendoline, Olwyn, and my mum Myra. Her brothers and sisters whose names I know are Bill, Walter, Enoch, Mary Elizabeth, Sarah Ann, and Susan. One of the brothers lossed both his legs. Also a brother or nephew (not sure which) ran the Ponderosa Cafe at Horseshoe Pass his name was Dai Williams. He lived in Highfield, and his sister had a tea shop in Llangollen.

Lynne Bellis Towyn Abergele.
To John Wynne Cheshire. Alun House, 3,Quarry Road, Brynteg, or Robert's Road was the home of my maternal grandparents. I was born in 1950 and spent many happy years growing up there when visiting them as a child. I remember my mother telling me that her parents bought Alun House from Mr George Williams. After the death of my grandparents the house was passed on to their eldest son Mr Emlyn Evans. He died in 1986. A few years later after his wife died, the house was sold.

According to a historical names certificate our name came from the Welsh borders. I would like to hear from anybody with this name.

Re the houses known as Ivor Cottages. In 1950 Mrs Broad lived in the end one furthest from the shop at the other end. Then Mr and Mrs Griffiths, next door Mrs Manuel, then Mr & Mrs Ward. These were the four known as Ivor Cottages. Then Mrs Lloyd and next door, not known as Ivor cottages, was Mrs Lloyd. I can remember "Auntie" Eva running this shop and have a photograph. I can also remember that a Butcher, Les Price, had a shop on the same corner, think this was a wooden building and I can remember it being taken down. This was at the top of Church Hill on Victoria Road. Then the house I was born in on Victoria Road, the other side of Church Hill. Another shop opposite was run by Mrs Broad and then the Plevin family who also ran the fish and chip shop leading up to Quarry Road. The favourite shop for children was down towards The Castle Inn, on the left hand side. Mr and Mrs Pope owned this shop, now a house. This was the sweet shop. I remember changing my sweet rationing token there. Would love to see more photographs of "old Brynteg" up on this site. Our Church was St. Peters, now sadly closed. Wonderful memories of the old rooms at the back of St. Peters. Most wedding receptions were held here. This backed on to the old Bakery fields, I think it was called.

Well the shop on Victoria Road used to be an old toy shop it closed about 18 years ago...I was about 6 years old then. Unless you're referring to the one on Church Road which used to be Brynteg Stores but is now an occupied house!

Can someone else with local knowledge please help me to understand the layout of Quarry Road, Brynteg. In the 1901 census, my great grandfather, George Williams and his family lived at No. 3 Quarry Road, Brynteg (RG13; Piece: 5220; Folio: 71; Page: 35). This house comes after the census enumerator had visited Roberts Road. His gravestone in St Paul's Church, Broughton, says George Williams lived at "Alun House", Quarry Road, Brynteg. On the next 1901 census page there are house numbers 7, 6, 5, 4 and ANOTHER No. 3 Quarry Road, Brynteg. Can anyone please shed any light on where Alun House might have been, and/or why there are two No. 3s on Quarry Road?

Can anyone tell me anything about a shop in one of the houses on victoria rd in brynteg, or any of the terraced houses called ivor cottages.

The area just off Quarry road where Cae Pentre is now and the part where the Army Cadet hut is now used to be the school canteen for the old Brynteg Junior School which is now Valley Court which is a warden run old peoples home I think. Hope this helps.
Tue Apr 18 09:39:29 2006

Mr Mozworth
Thanks very much, this does help. I'm also led to believe that before this what you speak of was also possibly 150 yrs ago and an old burial ground. I have no idea if this is true but I shall try to find out more on this and also my great grandfather was indeed the owner of what used to be the old quarry which lies a few yards up from the bowling green, that's why it's called Quarry Road. It's amazing what you find out when you dig! If anyone needs more information on this subject I can quite possibly find out more from family that still have knowledge of it.

Joyce Hartley from Nossegem, Belgium
I can only confirm what Miss Peters says. As an old pupil in the 60s and 70s of the Brynteg infant and junior schools on Victoria Road (now converted housing I believe) and then the senior school (where Valley Court is now) the area did indeed house the combined canteen for all three schools. As infants and juniors we had to walk up Roberts Road for our dinner in all kinds of weathers. The other school buildings on the site were for cookery and woodwork and behind those buildings and slightly raised was the science block.

Miss Peters from Wrexham
Before Cae Pentre and the field, the area Mr Mozworth speaks of housed the canteen and Home Ec buildings of the old Brynteg School (where Valley Court is now). Hope this helps.
Wed Feb 8 10:20:04 2006

Mr Mozworth, Brynteg
I can't give advice but I was hoping you could help me find out what something was before. Just off Quarry Road in Brynteg is a little estate called Cae Pentre. It's also next to the army cadet hut and a youth place was there also before. It was demolished a couple of years ago but before all that it was just an empty field. I need to know what it was before it was just a field.
