I left Bagillt in 1991 and now have 3 kids: Gareth, Thomas and Lydia Williams ages 20, 16 and 15. My parents were Sylvia and Robert Williams. Great to find this site. My oldest boy is doing his OE next year and will be visiting Bagillt, keep an eye out for him. Anybody know the wherabouts of my younger brother Terry Williams? Have lost all contact with him and would love to touch base again.

Hi Janet. I'm just trying to picture Newlyn, Bryntirion Rd. I know David Hughes. As it happens he lived just 3 doors away from me when I was growing up. You'd see a massive difference in Bryntirion now. Even when I was a kid we used to play in the houses as they were being built. It's so built up now. The Wern wouldn't have changed much from when you knew it. From what I hear they're building houses all along the old High St from the Blossoms to where the old picture house used to be by the Feathers pub.

Hi Lee, sorry it's taken so long to reply, just been going through some old paperwork and it was actually 42 years since we left Bagillt. I lived at Newlyn, Bryntirion Road. I often wonder if the house is still there. I can remember some names of friends I had back then: Susan and Sandra Thomas and Jeanette Hogarth. My brother had a friend named David Hughes, I imagine he would be around 55 years now. Our neighbour I can remember just calling her aunty Grace. My father and brother passed away quite a few years ago, but my mother was only 18 months ago. I wish I had come across this site before as I am sure some of the names mentioned she would know.

Hello Derek. I was brought up on the Wern mate. I live in Christchurch NZ and have been for the past 7 years. If you're ever in Nelson (been there) and come to Christchurch just leave a message on this site and I'll have the kettle on before you turn up. There'll be a welcome in Rolleston for you and the family. I remember Bob Salsbury's well. Get in touch.

Some familiar names appear on this site! I was born in Gadlys Lane opposite Bob Salisbury's farm in 1943. My grandparents lived on the main road opposite the Church. My brother is in Bangor, and my sister is in Deeside. My wife Sandra and 3 children emigrated to Oz in 1969 and now share our time between Perth and Nelson in NZ.

Hi Molly, thank you very much for your comment. I think I remember you. I remember playing on the swings with a few girls from Nant y Glyn. Yes, I have a sister, Paula, she's married, has children and grandchildren and they're all living in Wrexham. I've been living in Italy for almost 40 years now. I like it here - weather, food and the people are more like it was in Bagillt, friendly, nosey, not like the big towns in England when you don't know even your next door neibougher. How's Rhyl these days, Pulled down the Marine lake fairground haven't they? I used to love going out for a days trip to Rhyl ending up at the fair with a bag of doughnuts and rock. Once again, thanks for your comment.

Hi Sandra from Milan, I remember you as a little girl when we both played with Marina Davies who lived next door to your Nana in Hope Cottages. You used to come from Wrexham to visit. Did you also have a little sister? I remember your mum Norah and your uncle Goronwy. I lived in Nant y Glyn, moved to Rhyl 45 years ago and though it felt I was going a long way from home at the time, it's not as far as you have travelled!

Hello, what a surprise I got when I opened the Bagillt old photos page, the first page was the TOL Bagillt football club with my uncle Gron who was there smiling out at me. What a lovely surprise! Gron was very proud to be the goalkeeper and would have loved to play professional. It's the only photo I have of him as a young lad, then moving on through the pages I found him again in the darts club. I remember that he and my Taida used to love going out in the evenings to the Stag and have their pint and a game of darts. Does anyone remember my Taida (grandfather) Bill Griffths or my Nana Mary Griffths who was widow of Joseph Hughes who died when a shaft in the collery collasped, and my mum Nora Hughes, they lived just off the Pentre in the last of the terrace houses "Hope cottages" (no 19) next door to Arthur Baxter, and Philis Parry, just on the corner before going up the road to Pen y Glynne and Nant y Glynne? I used to spend all my summers at nana's. I absolutely loved it in Bagillt, going for walks up Sandy Lane or going down to the Cob. Unfortunately all my family are dead, my mum died 3 years ago in Wrexham. I managed to get to Wrexham just in time to see her before she passed away. Thanks for your memorial photos. Keep up showing all your old photos. P.S. Does anyone know anything about the artist D. Davies or the Davis family? He was my nana's brother-in-law. I remember seeing quite a few of his paintings in the empty bedroom and nana left me the only one she kept for herself. Once again, thank you.

Hello Sue. Neil lives in Amsterdam and had been there for nearly 30 years. Luther is in Corwen near Bala. Where did you live in Bagillt? Message for Lee Marvin Williams. Like your brother Neil, I too am 52 and attended Merllyn primary school around 1964/5. I went back to Bagillt on holiday last year and took a few photos of the school. I will try and get them posted on here so you can show your children. Like you, I now live 'Down Under' - far warmer! To Janette Commins. Where did you come from in Bagillt? If you left when you were eight and been in Perth for 45 years you'd be 53 now. My brothers Neil and Luther Williams would have been a year or so below you in the Merllyn School. Luther is now 53 or so and Neil 52. Do you remember them at all? You may have been too young to remember at the time but I'll ask my brothers back in Wales if they remember you. My eldest girl Natalie was only 9 when we left six and a half years ago. All my three girls are doing great and I have never regretted moving to the other side of the world.I love Bagillt and always will but opportunities here made me leave. Hope you find what you're looking for. Tell me where you lived, as Bagillt is still fresh in my mind's eye.

To Jane Williams of Old London Rd. The Old London Rd from what I remember is an old Roman Rd that went the length of the north Wales coast and led to London. Only as far back as 20 years or so ago it was still cobbled. I'm not sure if they would have been original cobbles laid by the Romans. If you go to the other side of the Wern you'll find another part of it on the walk between the Wern and Pen-y-Glyn. This part was still cobbled 6 years ago and I think still is. The road adjacent to where you are in The Old Engine is Roman's Way in Bryntirion. The history that very road would have seen over the past 2 thousand years would be amazing. Your house is built on a Roman treasure. If only it could talk!

Harp House ref BW USA, I have made further enquiries regarding Harp House and can confirm that Harp House was indeed a pub presumably referred to as an inn. One person I spoke to at our History Club meeting last evening told me that her father, Jimmy Taylor, was born there in 1906 and her grandfather 'owned' the pub. The only photo at the moment is as previously stated, this 'part' shot is on our home page history site www.bagillt-history.org.uk. If however I am able to secure a better photo I will place it on this page.

Dean. Good to hear back from you. I remembered your sister's name after I sent the last e-mail. So Gary Jones has got the Blossoms. I thought that place closed a while ago. Do you see Leighton Jones who lives near you? He was working with me for a while before I left for NZ. I think he's scaffolding now. Great lad is Leighton! I hear they're going to build houses on Eddie Hughes's field right near you. I can't think how they'd get access as all the supplying roads would be bottle necked. Do you remember when all where you live (The vicarage) was all fields? I remember Ginhead, Codge, Little Neil, Paul Williams, John Jones and me and loads of Wern kids used to play in the new houses when we were little kids. The amount of damage we caused wasn't funny. Do your mam and dad still live in Romans Way? I've heard they've built houses down the back of there now. I expect the cobblestones at the back of your parents' house have been dug up in the process. Does Norman Davis still live next to your parents? Keep in touch. Good to hear from you Dean and take care. Lee

Dean Blackwell. Good to hear you're doing good. So you ended up on the Wern or is it Wern Avenue? Do you see much of Gorgeous Graham or Codge nowadays? What are they up to now? I haven't heard from them in years. So old Bagillt is changing fast. From what I've been told there are lots of eastern Europeans about Bagillt. Do you see much of Luther and Darren Williams? If you do then tell them to get on the e-mail and have a chat. Same goes for Gorgeous. I haven't seen your sister Mandy since I was a very young teenager. Didn't she go to the Richard Gwyn school? If so then that's where we lost touch. Bloody shame isn't it? You know I've completely forgotten your older sister's name. I remember she'd be a couple of years older than me and would have been in my sister Tracey's year through school. Good health Dean. Lee.

Further to my response of 21st regarding your enquiry Merllyn Lead works, I regret to say my initial research seems to suggest that little information is recorded about the Merllyn Leadworks apart from the fact that it is thought it was disused by 1884. Ref to enquiry from Mr Vic Tyler-Jones Chester. As a member of the Bagillt History Club I have access to hundreds of photographs of Bagillt 'through the ages'.There were two such works at Bagillt known colloqually as the LEADWORKS. There are a number of photographs of at least one of these works which was located at the Boot-End of the village. With the assisstance of our Chairman there maybe photographs of the Merllyn works and will let you know the outcome of our search when completed. In addition to this, I also hold a copy of the map of Bagillt in the ninteenth century which clearly shows the outline of the buildings at that time. As you can well imagine these works no longer exist, the 'Merllyn' works was finally demolished of its remaining buildings some two to three years ago to make way for a housing estate which will be known as Church View. For reasons unknown to me building work appears to have been put on hold. If we are able to find any photographs I will, via this page, arrange for you to receive them, perhaps by leaving them at the Chester Heritage Centre for you to collect.

Mathew Robertson. I remember the big swing at the back of Alwen Drive. It was at the top of the real steep bank tied to an oak tree. We used to swing out from nothing to about 30 feet at full swing. We were right over the trees at the bottom of of the slope near the stream. It was dangerous but great fun. If it's the one I remember didn't someone hang a big blue petrol tin high up in the trees below so we could swing out and kick it? The Blue Bell woods were a great adventure for the Wern and Bryntirion kids. There were a few swings in those woods as I recall. We used to camp out there in the summer time amongst the ferns. My hayfever played havoc with me, but I wouldn't swap it for the world. Great great memories.

Mathew Robertson. You know mate I'm trying to picture you but it was a while ago. Yes, I remember the old MZ I had. Myself and Vaughan Williams got it for nothing from my brother's ex girlfriend. Vaughan, the way he is, had it going in just two days. We had great fun on that bike. Vaughan was a genius when it came to taking things apart and putting them together again. I've been in NZ for five and a half years now and may be on our way to Oz next. The bonfire days were special times. Rob Nolan always had a big bonfire at the back of his house and we guarded it fiercely with pellet guns. John Jones and Darren Caddock and the rest of the gang would come in the dead of night to light the bonfire with pre-made petrol bombs. What fantastic times they were! The kids today don't know what they missed out on. You'll have to enlighten me a little bit on who you knocked about with so I can picture you; sorry mate! There are a lot of us spread around the world now and the likelihood is we'll never get together again, quite sad when you think about it. I want to get in touch with little Neil Williams who now lives in the Folkestone area of Kent. Could you ask around for me and let me know via this e-mail system. Thanks Mathew. We used to play there as kids and we used to have a massive bonfire up the back. There was always a bonfire on the Wern and up Bryintirion, we used to sit guarding ours. I remember one night somebody put a light to it and we were running to and from the houses with buckets of water but well it went up. My mam is Pat Wheeler who used to work in the Feathers Inn and also the ba and the stag. My father, deceased now, was Ian Robertson from Nant y Glyn. Nice to see you all writing in, hello to you Mr Pritchard and Glyn we used to have a laugh in the ba many years ago and Lee what you doing in New Zealand? I still remember that old bike you had was it a cz or something? Them were the days eh!

Hi Paul of Northampton.I refer to your enquiry of the 21st June last regarding your reference to the former Blossons Pub. It, to the best of my knowledge, is not an Indian Restaurant. The new name of the pub is now the RED DRAGON but not the Welsh version as it depicts a Chinese version of the Dragon on the outer walls of the Pub.

To Steph Louise Jones; I have looked through the Census records and can't find a David Conway who was a Farmer in the Bagillt area. However my Great-Grandparents were David and Eleanor Conway, who could well have lived in the Bagillt area.

Steph from Cardiff. There is a Wern farm in Bagillt but it's not on Foel Gron. The Wern farm is at the top of Wern avenue leading to the Wern. 30 or so years ago they used to have loads of pigs and a big corn field. No cows or sheep like you'd expect! The man who has it now is Eddie Hughes and it's not a working farm. Hope this may be of help to you.

Was there a hotel in or near Bagillt called the Bryntick or Bryteg around the turn of the 20th century? I am trying to trace my great grandfather, Thomas Craig, who may have owned or managed it.

I was wondering if anyone has any information regarding the farm or family I'd be very grateful. I appreciate that the info I have is limited and once I have acquried more, I shall post again. Many thanks!

I would like to thank TOL for taking the trouble to reply to my request for information about Mabel Jones. I have now found out that she lives near Cefn Mawr - and is rather younger than the Mabel Jones that TOL knew! Thanks again - your reply was much appreciated.

I doubt very much that the Mable Jones to which Sue Dennett from Sussex refers is the same one which she has requested information of from this page. The Mable Jones to which this page refers, along with her husband Charles, would now be well over a hundred years of age, their son Edwin also died many years ago. If Sue wishes to highlight photograph number four of this page Mabel is standing far right of the photo behind three young ladies in the kneeling position, her husband Charles is extreme right and the taller of the gentlemen standing at that location, their son Edwin is in the back row at a 'centre location' of the bus and looking slightly to his right. To give you some indication, this photo was taken approximately sixty years ago on a trip, which my late mother organised to Southport. (28/03/07)

Does anyone remember Sarah-Ann (Sally) and Robert-John Williams? They lived in Eldon Cottages near the Feathers in Bagillt. They had 3 children Edna Urwin, who is now 77, George, 71, and John would have been 76. He died 22 years ago. Edna was married to Glyn Pritchard and George was married to Eileen Pritchard.

Is the family still in Wern Ucha? Is Geoffy still about and is he still the charactor he was? I remember he was the top space invader player in the Pentre Chip Shop when we were all around 13 to 17 years old. He was a missed opportunity as he was a natural comedian who had everyone in stitches. I miss some of that humour down under! Say hello to Mike and the family for me will y'?

I was pleased to read the comments of Ian Pritchard, Bagillt, who has now been able to put the final name to the Gentleman wearing the scarf on the Bagillt Arm's Darts team. I was also quite intrigued to read the reason why Dan appeared on the photo. It was as recent as last Friday 16/02/07 when I 'exchanged a wave' to your father Don, I was waiting for the 'chippy' to open at the Wern when he passed by driving his Tractor. Glyn and Wolfie were also well known to me, Glyn was at the Merllyn School at the same time as myself. Perhaps Ian can find out for me whether or not the Pritchard family lived near to Nant-y Moch, I seem to remember that earlier members of the family did live at that location way back in the 1940s prior to moving to Sandy Lane, we have a picture of that property on our Bagillt History file. 22/02/07

The man sat in the middle row (far right) wearing the scarf is Dan Pritchard - the uncle of my Dad, Don Pritchard, and also the uncle to Glyn and Wolfie Pritchard who are seen in the top row of the photograph. According to my Dad, Dan wasn't actually in the Darts Team but was just there to be in the picture -which may shed some light as to who he was!

To Lee Marvin, NZ. Thank you for the information, I hope your brothers are both well. I certainly remember your parents, I used to call them Uncle George and Aunty Gwyneth. Times have certainly changed a great deal. I can remember quite clearly walking with your brothers from Wern Ucha to Cornist park in Flint just to have what we thought would be a swim in the pool there. What a surprise we got when we found out it was only a paddling pool. You might want to let the lads know that my dad Bill passed away 3 years ago this September, mother still lives in Flint. Anyone else reading this, do you know of: Larry Hamilton, Brian Blackwell or Rodney Hughes all from Pen-y-Glyn. It would be nice to hear about them and before I forget, Craig Allsop.

I'm an ex Bagillt boy, used to live in Wern Ucha as a boy. Some of the names I can remember of people I used to hang around with are; Luther & Neil Williams, Derek Jones, Stanley Nolan, Paul Williams and Andrew Humphreys. My memories of being a kid in the Wern are all good. I had a sister, Lynda, who wasn't a particularly well child and there may be some who would remember her, my other sister Carol lives in Flint and my brother Michael, who was the youngest, like Lynda has passed away. I can also remember fishing for eels and fish down the cob and in condies lake. If you remember me it would be lovely to hear from you.

Hi Gwyn,
I was so pleased to read your comments. Your dad and I were good friends in the 'old days' ask your dad if he remembers our visit to Luxembourg. In 1953 a group of apprentices fron Brookhirst Switchgear had a great time there. Also mention to your dad that the old factory where we served our time has a housing estate built on it now, one of my daughters lives near that location in Chester, in fact we paid a visit to her today and passed by where the factory stood.

To TOL, in Bagillt. You're right it is John Simon and I'm sorry to hear he has passed away. I know his son Neil who is 2 years older than me. My brother Neil in Amsterdam also corrected me on this. My dad, George Williams, has a near identical photo to this. I must correct you on the surfacing of the old Roman roads though. From roughly 100 metres going up the hill from Bob Salisbury's farm, Gadlys Lane, you'll find to your left the remains (still cobbled) of the Roman road that will lead you part way to the Wern. The road stretches for about 70 metres or so and is very narrow. Up until I left for New Zealand 5 years ago it still remained.

My friend Noel has confirmed to me that the person to the top right of the picture is in fact John Collins former Station Master at Bagillt and as previously stated is not his brother Freddie, it has also been confirmed to me that the person to the bottom left of the photo is indeed the late John Simon.
I feel it appropriate to put the names of all those present, I will list below the names of those I remember by name, perhaps someone else can add to those remaining marked thus?

In response to Lee's from NZ enquiry the Roman Road system. There are, to the best of my knowledge, three sections of road that remain and which I understand were built by the Romans. They are the Old London Road which passes the Cottage Hospital at Flint, the next section which passes my home goes from Old Engine to the bottom of Bryntirion Road, this section is on our house deeds refered to as Old London Road, (see photo No 5 from this group of photos) and the remaining section is near the Wern where Lee mentioned. All surfaces of these roads have Tarmac.
With regards to Lee's other comments regarding the Bagillt Arm's darts club. I remember most, if not all, of the people shown but there are two or three names I am not too sure of. What I can confirm is that Tom Marshal is indeed in a home, the man to the top right is, I regret to say, not Fred Bennet his brother Noel, a good freind of mine, has just confirmed to me that it could be Willy Platt? I must admit that I was rather surprised when you said that the person to the bottom left of the photo was your father George Williams I have, ever since seeing this photograph, thought that person to be the late John Simon? 06/01/07

I'd just like to say about the photograph of the Bagillt Arms darts team. The man in the top left is my maternal grandfather Robert Evans who sadly I never knew. Third from top left is my uncle Tom Marshal, who was married to my late aunty Megan. I think he's in a home in Rhyl now. The man on the top far right was a man called Freddy Bennet, who was a great friend of my dad. The big man sitting two from bottom left was John 'Free Wheel' Jones. He's the grandfather to Andy, Heather and John Jones of the Wern. Last but not least, the bottom left is my dad George Williams, he's the best looking one! My dad still lives on the Wern with my mam, Gwyneth Williams. My dad has got this picture and many more besides. I'll let him know and you 'Bagillt heritage' can get them put on the internet.

Hello I was brought up in Bagillt and now live in NZ. I wonder if anyone can answer a question for me. The old London Road that runs from Gadlys Lane to the back of Romans way in Bryntirion. A lot of it is lost now due to the building of the Wern, Pen-y-glyn, and Bryntirion. At the back of Romans Way and at the top old London Road off Merllyn lane (where there's the big sycamore tree) it all seems to be made of cobble stone. Was this actually layed by the Romans or was it layed later? The reason I'm asking is that when I was a kid and used to play in these areas. It was quite obvious that they are the only roads for miles around that are cobbled. The Romans were famous for their cobble stone roads in Britain and it just seems reasonable to suggest that they are the original thing. If so then they should be maintained and protected for posterity. They also could be a tourist attraction. I may be wrong but can anyone prove me wrong. Lets not leave them rot away or even worse tarmaced over. While on the subject. In a field at the back of the Manor estate ther is a big bump in the middle of the field. This bump is twice the size of a house and has no earthly excuse for being there. As it happens it's on the same course as the old London Road that would have gone right through there 1600 to 2000 years ago. I'm in New Zealand now and can't investigate. Happy hunting!

I lived up the Wern until I got married. I'm very pleased to read about the history of Bagillt. My mother's family were known as Jones Pen-Y-Gob and occupied two cottages out of a terrace of three. Mrs Seville lived next door. My taid worked at Bettisfield and Point of Ayr too which he had to walk to every day. I have a book of air crashes in North Wales and the German bomber crash is mentioned. The pilot was captured and Mrs Thomas, librarian at Flint, gave him a bar of chocolate.

There is another page that you may wish to try on the North East Wales Web - Bagillt Plane Crash. There you will find some interesting reading. If You have not already done so try the Bagillt History Club site as well. Now to your other question, there was indeed a bomb found in Bagillt initially by myself and a school friend. It was dropped on the Merllyn School field but failed to explode. My full story about this Bomb can be found on the BBC People's War website, in addition to this I have more stories published.

WITH REFERENCE TO PETER WILLIAMS FROM DELAWARE AND HIS COMMENTS ABOUT THE BLOSSOMS PUB.
FIRSTLY AND REGARDING DAVID'S REFERENCE TO JOE BLOGG'S. IN THE 'OLD DAYS' WE DID IN FACT SAY THAT PEOPLE WERE 'OFF FLINT' AND 'FROM BAGILLT'. IN ADDITION, WHAT I CAN CONFIRM IN HIS REFERENCE TO THE BLOSSOMS PUB. I CAN ONLY ASSUME THAT DAVID HAS THOUGHT THAT THE 'c' BELOW THE PHOTO OF THE BLOSSOMS STANDS FOR CLOSED. WHEN IN FACT IT MEANS CIRCA IE, THE PHOTO OF THE BLOSSOMS WAS TAKEN CIRCA 1950. I REGRET TO SAY HOWEVER THAT THE BLOSSOMS PUB CLOSED RECENTLY AND IS NOW BOARDED UP.

Reference to E. M. Pendly's, Prestatyn comments. Charles & Mable Jones did indeed have a son called Edwin, he is the person to the centre of the photo, back row, with a bus company's name 'ja--in' as the 'backdrop', he appears to be looking right on the photo. Mr & Mrs Jones were also on this trip which was organised by my mother, they were far right of the photo which unfortunately has been 'cropped off' perhaps the editor might consider reducing the photo a little more in order to include all members who were on this day outing?
